I'm assuming the Buckeyes will bring on a coach not named Jake Diebler.

Lorenzo Romar will "conclude his tenure" as head coach of Pepperdine at the end of the season. Pepperdine is currently 12-19 in the sixth season of Romar's second tenure as the head coach of the Waves. Romar, 65, is probably finished as a head coach, but could find a job as a senior assistant to some young coach in a big job. As a head coach with Pepperdine, St. Louis, and Washington, Romar compiled a record of 466-396 with multiple NCAA tournament and NIT appearances. He was PAC 12 coach of the year three times. Never any issues with NCAA compliance or negative publicity. A fine career, well done. pepperdinewaves.com/news/2024/3/5/general-mens-basketball-announces-update-to-coaching-staff.aspx

What? If that happens I will have to root for Moser? I'm not really a fan of his, but I will be if he takes the Blue Demon job. Thanks for the update, PTC.

So, maybe Porter Moser isn't heading to DePaul. 🤔

Long Beach State parts ways with Dan Monson.

Long Beach State parts ways with Dan Monson. Interesting. Gonzaga's rise to the top really began under Dan Fitzgerald in the late 1980s--The Zags made their first ever NCAA appearance under Fitzgerald in 1995--with Monson as an assistant under Fitzgerald for 9 years. But Monson's two years succeeding Fitzgerald as head coach, in 1998 and 1999, really started the Gonzaga juggernaut. Monson's '98 team won a school record 24 games, and his '99 team then went 28-7 and reached the Elite 8 in the NCAA tournament. The Zags have not missed the tournament since. Those two years put then 37-year old Monson in high demand, and he took the job at Minnesota. He was 8 years there, generally keeping the team above water but nothing special--a .527 winning percentage and just one NCAA bid. He's spent the last 17 years at Long Beach. His teams became known for playing murderous non-conference schedules, but after some early success--three straight 3 regular season titles, but just 1 NCAA bid from 2011 to 2013--things fell off. His teams kept winning in the Big West--in 6 years from 2014 through 2019 they had 5 winning seasons and one .500 season in conference play, but in 5 of those years they had losing overall records due to their brutal non-league schedule. With losing records, they weren't getting NIT or even CIT/CBI bids, and fan interest slowly dropped. Ironically, in the last three years they've been over .500 and won 55 total games, their best 3 year total since that 2011-13 streak, but it appears that either or both of Long Beach and Monson have decided it's enough mediocrity--time to dare to be great. Monson won 4 Big West coach of the year awards at Long Beach, but 17-16 mid-major teams just don't grab the national spotlight, no matter how well they do in conference play. Meanwhile, Gonzaga promoted Mark Few to replace Monson, and Few has been there since, early on rejecting several overtures to "move up," and turning the Zags into a major power. I'm sure there are some lessons here, about being happy where you are; about confidence that what you've been building can last; about scheduling philosophy; perhaps more, but I'll not try to elaborate on them here.

Kenny Payne has been let go by Louisville. Disappointing end for a hire that looked good on paper. I hope the fan base won't be hard on him on the future. He's loved Louisville for 40 years.
