This kind of stuff is all over Twitter and social media. Sad. Yet no words or releases from Taylor.
"I always loved U-D basketball (& baseball), from covering Dick Vitale & Smokey Gaines' teams with John Long & Terry Tyler (I never saw DeBusschere or Haywood play there). But the program's been a JOKE for years, even changing its name to "Detroit-MERCY!" I just saw they're 0-22!"

We've actually been saved from a lot of public derision due to the other local sports teams. The Michigan Football Wolverines national championship run dominated local sports news. The Lions have been a constant top story, also. Even in the category of "bad local basketball teams" the struggles of the Pistons have been in the forefront. When the football seasons came to an end, it was just a matter of time before people started noticing the horrible year we've having. Honeymoon is over.
I feel for Earl Cureton, who has been a part of the Detroit and University of Detroit communities for so long and unfortunately has a front row seat for this debacle.

I think Mike is back as long as they win a game or 2 and escape the headlines. And I’m honestly here for it even more after reading the article. Guy is still in there giving it his all even though he knows he didn’t get good enough guys in here and that’s on him. You guys have lived through this a lot longer than me but unless there’s a Sundance wicks out there ready to turn this thing around in one off season, they would be much better off keeping him and trying to build some continuity on the roster. Keeping hurst and tank in the program would be huge and they are likely better guards than almost anyone we could get in the portal. If this is it for MD, I don’t think that’s a bad thing either but I 100% think MD is more equipped to handle this specific athletic departments issues even if you get a guy with fire in there at this current moment.

Nobody can tell me that a coach with a 0-22 is giving it his all.

Akhorey, I appreciate you posting on here as a student. Somehow its few and far in between students are on here part of the discussion.
Keeping Coach Davis for roster continuity sake is good in theory, but...in all his years here we have ZERO that demonstrates he is building a roster with continuity. Every year we've got major roster turnover, all kinds of news guys coming in, guys that are around for a cup of coffee or maybe a half of semester on the roster and then gone. It's just his MO with roster management and...its just not working at all.
I agree that the other stories of the day have kept us out of the harsh glare of the spotlight but its a slow news period here in next few weeks so maybe we will get our sad due...

If no one (or two) bail to the portal, we have the potential to bring seven (maybe more) players back next year, more than we've had in quite a few years.

This was the point I was really getting at And the corollary to that is that firing Davis probably means Hurst and Tank and Oaks and maybe Mak hit the portal.

There are certainly reasons to justify firing Davis, most obviously the record, but if you want to make a case for why he could be retained, your post is spot on. I think he's giving his best effort, and while that obviously hasn't been good enough during his tenure at Detroit, I've never bought the line of thinking that he was just mailing it in. Thinking he is just cruising through the years here, collecting a check and not caring, goes against everything that he has shown previously in his career. I said earlier this season that bringing back Hurst, Tank, Mak, and Johnson would enable us to have a solid HL guard rotation. I'd rather retain those guys than try to get players of their potential through the portal. I like Tyree Davis and Oaks; I think Davis (and Manciel for that matter) are likely to show that "junior year to senior year improvement" that is often seen in JUCO players. Oaks has performed admirably for a guy thrown right into D1 action against a West Coast Conference team in game one. I think an off season of conditioning and practice would do wonders for him, and he would be ready for a step up on 2024-25. If the Titans program (no matter who the coach) is able to retain those six, or most of them, that's a head start on recruiting the class of 2024. Of course, the possibility remains that the Titans could catch lightning in a bottle and land the next Dennis Gates, who will convince some talented players to join him in a struggling cold weather Midwest city basketball program and see an immediate impact. It doesn't happen often, but it happens. Whatever the University does, fire Davis or retain Davis, I'll still be a fan. Looking through my Titan colored glasses, I can see a possible upside in either scenario. Go Titans.

I think we need to make a move that a program intent on winning would make... and that is undoubtedly relieving the AD and head coach of their duties following the season.
I get it that some would like to see some players come back. They may leave or they may come back, regardless. I agree that we've got some potential D1 contributors on the current team.
All that said...
Personally, I'm not keeping on a coach because I'm hoping to see a guy shooting 28% (21% from deep) & playing on a winless team come back for his senior season. I think the coaching/AD decision is much too critical to take stuff like that into account.

I wouldn't use "if Davis leaves Mak won't come back" as the deciding factor in the retain or fire decision. In Mak's defense, I expect him to be a better player next year than he has been, considering that he should be fully healed from the Achilles injury that caused him to miss a year and should benefit from a year of D1 experience. I guess part of my thinking is that if nothing else, he's averaging 9.78 ppg the past nine games, a much better stretch than the start of the year. I think he'll be better. But, I still agree that his status won't be the determining factor in whether or not Davis is brought back.

I think the University's lack of response to the bad PR of the News articles, radio commentary, Twitter comments, etc., is just another fumbled opportunity by the school.
Just my opinion, but I think the school should have responded clearly, starting with a mass communication to everyone in the University community. That's alumni, stakeholders, students, employees, etc. Use the "Detroit vs Everybody" theme and put out a call for support. Something like, "Our Titans are struggling and need your help! Come out and show the team that you are standing with them in this tough time. It's Detroit vs Everybody!" Add in some ticket specials, some special guests, giveaways, mechandise, etc. Have the President make a public statement and show of support.
Maybe it would help, maybe it wouldn't. And of course, it would probably have a greater impact if the school did a better job of communicating througout the season. Still, I think it would give a sign to the current players and potential recruits that the University actually does care about the program. And one thing we know for sure is that the University's standard procedure of hunkering down and letting other people set the narrative is never going to work.

And one thing we know for sure is that the University's standard procedure of hunkering down and letting other people set the narrative is never going to work. This was from the Detroit News article from a few days back, the school doesn't even send out game recaps to media contacts, maybe if we don't share information on each successive loss, no one will notice: "But there still are some believers, and some workers, starting with Tankersley, who acknowledged the record is an "embarrassment," even if others, including Vowels, declined to use that word — even as the department's media-relations staff has stopped emailing out postgame recaps to local media. (It still emails out game previews.)" And "Detroit vs. Everybody" wouldn't fly, it would have to be "Detroit Mercy vs. Everybody" consistent with branding guidelines.

The WBB just completed two home games with free admission. The men have 3 home games remaining. Why charge any admission?

I agree with Larry, pull out all the stops. Ask fans to bring a rabbits foot, four leaf clover, etc. Maybe with 500 fans a the IUPUI game the team will rise to the occasion. Buy a couple of spots on WDFN and on 1500AM .Free will even resonate with the curious. Someone please awaken Vowels from his slumber and announce free admission to the remaining games. What's to lose?
