During 2008-09 to 2015-16, there were Williams, Manuel, McClellan, Blake, Holman was suspended, Bass, Foster-Smith, Bonam, and DeBerry are ones I remember off the top of my head. Also, Lacy James was not medically cleared by us but went on to be a star in the MVC.
2016-18: Hogan, Bass, Foster-Smith, Tariiq Jones, and Gibson are some that I recall.
And there were others whose names were never disclosed.
Academic issues are supposed to be private.

If I remember correctly, Ack sat out the required year after transferring from Penn State. I don't believe his inactive year was an eligibility issue. He got suspended at least a couple of times at Detroit, but going by memory, I believe it was violation of team rules/behavior issues, not academic issues. He quit the team after being suspended in what would have been his second year of active playing in Detroit, rather than serving the suspension and returning. Again, that's going by my old man memory, so someone please correct me if I am wrong.

From what I remember, that's an accurate assessment of the Ack Saga, Sam.
Here's another take on gambling on certain players: I do ultimately understand why coaches take a gamble on certain players -- Bass, Hogan, Foster-Smith all being examples. When things don't work out for guys like this, who to blame might be a point of contention that we've argued ad nauseum -- but in the end it doesn't really matter. They were academic gambles that didn't work out -- OR worked out for awhile, if you buy into the "getting some years out of a talented player is better than none -- even if they don't graduate" argument.
I remember golfing with PW at one of our Outings after he had retired and he said, "when Mickey (Barrett) talked me into taking Brandon (Cotton) I told him, "You're gonna be the one who takes the call at 2am." Well, the call finally came in about BC at 2am. But PW took BC because he had special talent.
My point is: I guess we've gotta take a few gambles here or there. But those gambles should be on guys of the talent-level of the guys mentioned in this post. Guys like LeGreair and Schwannecke don't put you over the top, but we need a few more of them. One of our recent failures is that we've recruited more guys like Moss and fewer guys like LeGreair. When you have a few LeGreairs who buy into the Program, you are setting an example for the guys who come in of what it means to be a Titan.
