This Davis firing isn't even close to fixing the problem. I hope the University realized this. We need to still fix the facilities and put more money into the program. Davis was not a slouch and was successful at multiply other Universities before ours. This leads me to believe there is much bigger issues up top causing the State of Our Program. If the president really meant what he said about making sports and basketball a priority than now the time to show by action his vision. I felt the last hire was a slam dunk but it turned into a brick. Personally I like Davis as a person from my interactions with him off the court and his vision for the University. It is sad that make it come to fruition.
Now we are starting all over again which is a recurring theme in the 2000's for UDM. Just as the University keeps try to reinvent how to call itself it will try also to reinvent how to run its men's basketball program. Let's see if they can do a better job than with the "rebrand". How many years they started that and still hear people get confused with our identity.

How many years they started that and still hear people get confused with our identity. I believe the biggest problem at the university is the institutional sclerosis resulting from long-serving employees having lived through the austerity and tough times of the past. It's like our parents or grandparents who lived through the Great Depression of the 1930s and refused to spend money even when their own financial situations were much more stable. It's like a financial PTSD. Garibaldi was able to stabilize the finances and bring operational security to the budgets. But old habits die hard. You can get to the point where you're penny-foolish - so austere that you are OK with things in a lesser condition. That includes operational budgets in sports. You continue to make do with less when the need to do so no longer exists. So, you get people reporting that we are cash strapped when we aren't. Why do they think that? Because too many employees (including some in Athletics) continue to act and speak like we are. The most encouraging thing for us is that our new president, Dr. Taylor, is a basketball fan who got his degrees at Memphis during the Larry Finch era there. His wife is also a fan and is usually at all the men's and women's games even when the Prez is out of town.

I"m not sure Davis would have gotten the job if AD wasn't part of the "package". Davis reached the height of his basketball career at Indiana and never got a second wind after he was let go. It's hard not to compare Ray Sr/Ray Jr years with the MD/AD years. Like him or not Ray Sr. somehow got quality players to come here to play with Jr, Mike Davis really never built a team around AD.
