Oakland has surpassed us as a team, as a program, and as an athletics department. Our biggest competition and rival is ourselves right now, not the Pioneers. I'm going to cheer for them. We are 1- whatever and don’t have a coach, have 200 people at our games and still have vowels as our AD. Oakland has a handful of HL titles in the past month across their sports, they are reigning HL hoops champs and are now in 2nd rd of tourney and darlings of the ncaas after beating Kentucky. We have fallen so freakin far. Good for Oakland for doing their thing, I salute them.

Good for Oakland and Kampe. We have a large challenge on our hands.

Oakland has an excellent draw in the second round--11th seeded NC State, which upset Texas Tech in Round 1. The Wolfpack will be favored but is eminently beatable. Almost every year there's at least one 12-14 seed that crashes the Sweet 16, and Oakland looks like a good candidate to be the one this year. If they do it, it will be with Kampe's 700th win in his 40th year, so get ready for lots and lots of sentimental coverage. This is one advantage to winning, so we should probably study it.

I thought it amazing that the Detroit Free Press ran the Oakland game story way back on page 5 of the sports section. There is an MSU game related story on the front page of newspaper. I realize it was an evening game but come on. The Detroit News had an OU game photo on the main section front page as well as it should have given the magnitude of the upset by a local metro university.
My wife graduated from Oakland. She is more of a Titan fan than Grizzled, but she was happy to see her alma mater get some national attention so I'm happy for her. And I think Oakland's success yesterday should add another match under UDM's butt to get its act together relative to Athletics.

Calipari should have studied our film more closely. Gohlke only made 6 three's against us in two games for the entire year!

Newspapers have earlier deadlines these days. Probably every front-page story could be laid out and be ready for production at 6 p.m. MSU played very early in the day. By the time Oakland won, they might have only had one or two pages still live and available for copy.

I kinda get that, but the Detroit News is under the same time constraints (and as a subscriber I get both papers electronically at about the same time) and they managed to get the story prominently displayed on the front pages of main and sports sections. The Free Press gives almost no coverage of UDM and OU nowadays, the News does a much much better job by any objective measure. The Freep has made an organizational decision to emphasize U-M and MSU coverage, largely ignore the state's Horizon and MAC teams.

I hope Oakland loses by 100 every time they set foot on the floor. Will they be leaving for the A-10 soon?

I hope Oakland loses by 100 every time they set foot on the floor. Will they be leaving for the A-10 soon? No, they won't. One winning season--remember, Oakland was 13-19 a year ago and has had 4 losing seasons in the last 6; this is their first NCAA appearance since 2011--ain't enough. And even if it were, there is no sign that the A10 wants to expand west, or that the MVC wants to expand east. There's no place else to go. CUSA, I suppose, but I don't see that happening. All that said, we sure as heck need to get our act together, because the day may yet come when someone better than the HL will decide to move on the Detroit market, and if that day comes any time soon, their choice ain't gonna be us.

NC State is one of the hottest teams in the bracket. Congrats to the Pioneers but I think their ride ends tomorrow. I have a tough time seeing this version of OU beat two quality teams in a row. But... you never know. That's why they play the games.

On a radio interview this afternoon, I think Kampe said that this will be NC State's 7th game in 11 days, apparently they had the max possible contests in the ACC tournament. He's hanging his hopes on the possibility that the Wolfpack may be a tired team come tomorrow.

If Gohlke shot his season average for 3 pointers against UK, then Oakland loses to Kentucky by at least 4 points. Even though NC State may be tired, as we learned from Antoine, if you live by the 3, you can die by the 3. NC State is also an older team than Kentucky. It's clearly a heat check game for one team.
