Davis- back, mak- back, Kuac- back, french back (depending on academic eligibility) Those 4 have made that clear to me barring something unexpected happening. Hurst seems to be in from a social media aspect but that one is still in the air for right now to me. So, no Oaks? He got few minutes in the stretch at the end of the season and there was some discussion around whether the coaches didn't think much of him or whether they wanted to be able to red-shirt last season. Oaks is out of here I don’t think he wants to play for Monty. Nothing negative from him there just from a fit standpoint he just wants something different. Ended up coming here so he could play early which he did but just didn’t crack the lineup as much as he thought before bruising his tailbone which knocked him out for the year. Good kid, told me he has some d1 interest in the portal hope he lands somewhere. Olujuwan is the interesting one to me in terms of will they stay will they go. Great defender on the perimeter and in the paint even though he’s only 6-5. Also great athlete but do we have room for another guy who’s tough to make use of on the offensive end?

My "I wonder" about Olajuwon is how much Coach Davis factored into his coming to Detroit. Both from Houston, assume Mike knows Hakeem. And I suspect that played a lot into Tank leaving; he seemed to have greater loyalty to Davis than to Detroit Mercy. But transferring would mean three school in three years for Olajuwon. Would his walk-on status mean he could play somewhere new with no concern because he didn't sign an LOI, etc.? On the other hand, he suited up and played for us. (I think the answer is that it wouldn't give him a pass, but what do I know?)

Currently there are no restrictions on the number of transfers someone on scholarship can make, no more requirements to sit out a year in situations where there have been multiple transfers. Even if there were, walk-on status would give you total freedom to transfer elsewhere.

I've never been in favor of coaches running players off. However, I recognize that today's environment, with basically unlimited player movement, makes those kind of actions more understandable.
One thing I have always said is, if a player is in the portal, consider him gone. And that's probably for the best. You don't want someone on the team who really doesn't want to be there.
If Kuac, Davis, Mak, and Alex are coming back, that's welcome news. And good on Coach Monty for resisting the urge to just broom everyone out and instead taking the time to take a good look at the full roster.

Scholarship players in 2023-24 with names of possible returnees bolded
#1 - Manciel #2 - Tchikou #4 - Tankersley Portal #5 - LeGreair Graduated but 1 year of eligibility left #6 - Kuac #8 - Toatley Left team in January Portal #11- Hurst Portal #13 - Davis #14 - Stone Portal #20 - Oaks Portal #23 - DelCadia No more eligibility #33 - Jankovic Quit in January
We start with 12 scholarship players. One is out of eligibility. Two of them quit last January. That leaves 9.
4 are in the transfer portal. That leaves 5 possibilities of players with eligibility who could return. And Hurst about whom I've heard conflicting info. Hurst is out of shape - is he committed to doing the work to get back in shape?. Kyle may have his masters degree by the end of summer - does he really want to play here. Tchikou's academic eligibility may not be certain until mid-August. Does Monty think that Davis can develop? So, I'm going with Mak and E-man as highly likely to return and Tyree as a likely. The other 3 have important question marks.

Good list PTC, I would only say with Toatley I think it was less of a quit the team and more here are your options.

I feel that you can make your point without using language like “running people off” and “broom everyone out”. Let’s support Coach Monty and any decisions he makes.

Hyperion I think Sam is supportive of Coach. I think you are knit picking here! I find the term Broom to be appropriate kinda tied in here to a clean sweep! I also feel that making concessions to players who do not want to be here is a good idea. Seems to me that when things get tight the guys who are not 100% in are the first ones to poison a locker room.

I think we can both agree that it’s too early to be critical of anything Coach does and let’s ALL support our program and aspire. As far as knit picking, I hope you meant that it’s a BAD idea to make concessions to players who do not want to be here?

titanmike - Toatley is in the portal anyway. So I amended his listing to reflect that.

Stone still looking ... recruitment still open means that he has no offers or he's trying to get a better offer. Just posted today.
