Loyola is one of the Titans oldest rivals (not as old as Cleary, of course), and it will be nice to resume a rivalry that has lain dormant since our fellow Jesuits split for the MVC over a decade ago. In fact, we've played the Ramblers 125 teams, more than any other opponent.
Currently the rivalry stands at 67-58 in favor of Loyola, but it has been a rivalry of streaks, and the Titans have won the last 10, going back to February 18, 2010, when the Ramblers laid a 67-41 whuppin' on our guys. But, for example, after Detroit joined the MCC in the 1981 season, Loyola won 11 straight. Anyway, keeping the current streak going is going to be a lot tougher than beating up on poor little Cleary.
This doesn't appear to be as good a team as some that Loyola has been putting on the floor in the last decade, but they should be solid. They were picked for 5th in the A10 this year, and have a couple of wins under their belt, though neither terribly impressive. The Ramblers have beaten up little Calumet-St. Joseph in an exhibition, 87-57, and then opened their official season with a less than impressive 79-72 home win over Chicago State. In that one, the Ramblers led by just 2 at the break, and the Cougars tied it at the start of the second half. Loyola eventually held a 7-12 point lead most of the second half, but was unable to put Chicago State away.
Probable Loyola starters:
G - Justin Moore, 6-3 Jr. (12.4 ppg, 3.5 apg at Drexel; 14 points, 7 assists v. Chicago State)
G - Desmond Watson, 6-0 Sr. (12.6 ppg, 2.5 apg, 38.6% 3Pt; 14 points v. Chicago State)
G - Jayden Dawson, 6-4 Jr. (7.9 ppg, 36.9% 3Pt; 20 points vs. Chicago State)
SF - Kymany Houinsou, 6-7 Jr. (4.3 ppg at Washington State)
C- Miles Rubin, 6-10 Soph. (All A10 freshman and defensive teams; 4 pts, 4 rebs. v. Chicago State)
Bench:
G - Jalen Quinn, 6-3 Jr. (4.5 ppg, 2.0 apg; 9 points vs. Chicago St)
G - Sheldon Edwards, 6-4 Gr. (6.0 ppg, 34.8% 3Pt)
F - Francis Nwaokorie, 6-7 Sr. (Big West HM at UC-San Diego; 5 pts, 9 rebs v. Chicago St)
F - Jalen DeLoach, 6-9 Sr. (3.6 ppg, 3.3 rpg at Georgia; 9 pts, 6 rebs. v. Chicago State)
Rubin is a big-time rim protector and will be a real test for both the Titan bigs and for efforts by Manciel, Lovejoy, and Johnson to drive to the hoop. Nwaokorie was a 1000 point career scorer in the Big West but can't crack the lineup at Loyola. This will be a tough game.
For history buffs, it's interesting that for all their meetings, UD and Loyola have few really big games. For the most part, Loyola's program has been up when the Titans were down, and vice-versa. The greatest game between the two was an epic struggle on December 10, 1963, when the Titans and Loyola--the defending national champ, then ranked #1 in the country--battled through overtime in Chicago before the Ramblers won 113-108. The Titans had trailed by 7 at the half but battled back behind sophomore center Dorie Murrey's 20 second-half points, and led by 6, 95-89, with just over 2 minutes remaining in regulation. But after a Titan turnover, the Ramblers' Ron Miller nailed a 25 foot jumper at the buzzer to force the OT. Rambler center Les Hunter took over in the extra period, scoring 9 straight points in the OT to clinch the win.
If the Titans win on Thursday, it will be our biggest win in quite some time. Frankly, I'll settle for another OT loss.
