So who wins the Conference awards and makes the all-conference teams? There's about a quarter of the conference schedule, or 15 percent or so of the season schedule, yet to play, but what's the fun of waiting. Here would be my picks if you had to pick 'em today:
Player of the Year: Kiefer Sykes, Green Bay Defensive Player of the Year: Jordan Fouse, Green Bay 6th Man of the Year: Jon Harris, Cleveland State Newcomer of the Year: Kahlil Felder, Oakland Coach of the Year: Gary Waters, Cleveland State
First Team All-Conference: Kiefer Sykes, Green Bay Kendrick Perry, Youngstown State Alec Brown, Green Bay Juwan Howard, Detroit LaVonte Dority, Valparaiso
Second Team All-Conference: Travis Bader, Oakland Corey Petros, Oakland Kahlil Felder, Oakland Evan Bruinsma, Detroit Trey Lewis, Cleveland State
Third Team All Conference: Matt Tiby, Milwaukee Jordan Aaron, Milwaukee Bobby Hain, Youngstown State Kelsey Barlow, UIC Jordan Fouse, Green Bay
All Defensive Team: Jordan Fouse, Green Bay Alec Brown, Green Bay Kendrick Perry, Youngstown State Duke Mondy, Oakland Moussa Gueye, Valparaiso
All Newcomer Team: Kahlil Felder, Oakland Matt Tiby, Milwaukee Kelsey Barlow, UIC Trey Lewis, Cleveland State Jon Harris, Cleveland State
We'll see how this looks compared to what I'd pick at year end.

Stat | Player 1 | Player 2 | Minutes Per Game | 37.2 | 33.6 | Points Per Game | 19.8 | 18.1 | Rebounds Per Game | 2.9 | 5.3 | Assists Per Game | 1.3 | 2.3 | Field Goal Pct. | .385 | .420 | Three Point Pct. | .407 | .354 | Free Throw Pct. | .930 | .828 | Blocks per game | 0.1 | 0.4 | Steals per game | 0.9 | 0.8 | Turnovers per game | 1.4 | 2.0 | Conference Averages | - | - | Points per Game | 16.8 | 19.1 | Rebounds per Game | 2.2 | 4.3 | Assists per Game | 0.9 | 2.5 | Field Goal Pct. | .347 | .442 | Three Point Pct. | .377 | .408 | Free Throw Pct. | .925 | .750 | Blocks per game | 0.3 | 0.3 | Steals per game | 0.8 | 0.9 | Turnovers per game | 1.2 | 2.0 |
Player #1 is Travis Bader. Player #2 is Juwan Howard. I think it is pretty clear that Howard has been a substantially better play in conference games, which I would weight more heavily in determining year end awards. But I also think it clear, though less so, that he's been better overall. Plus, he's a much better defensive player than Bader, typically drawing the other team's top front court or wing scorer. I did this because I am quite sure a lot of people think Bader just ought to be first team. I think if you did this with Dority you'd see the same.

Here is the table from updated and including Dority. Howard fell off a bit the last couple weeks, while Bader stepped it up. Note everything shows up in stats, but most things do. I think Howard is also the best defensive player of the three, and I think Howard had the least surrounding talent, especially on offense. The need for Howard to create his own shot, and the effort to score, was I think a fair bit higher than for Dority and Bader. Give Bader some credit simply for breaking the record and playing under that pressure. I don't think choosing any of these three over the other two is an outrage, but I think Howard would have been a better choice than either.

I agree with you, Commish. Bader gets credit for breaking the record, and that probably carried it for him. It's not a travesty that Howard was on second team, but I disagree with it.
