MAC freshman of the year Michael Weathers has left Miami and transferred to Oklahoma State. Troubling sign that a Big 12 team is taking a small, good/not great guard from a MAC program without the kid being a grad transfer. Not a good development for the mid majors.

Buffalo got a huge verbal commitment last night as Upstate New York native Jeenathan Williams decided to commit to the hometown school. Williams is a four star ESPN prospect, and rated in the top 150 by Rivals and 24/7. In his announcement, Williams stated that Buffalo was the first school to offer him and always recruited him hard. He left Buffalo to go to Prolific Prep in Cali, but decided to return home for college. Impressive job by the Buffalo staff. Good for them. n.rivals.com/content/prospects/2018/jeenathan-williams-171477

MCSam, I missed this post back in April, I agree that is not a good sign for the mid-majors. It kind of puts programs like ours in the realm of being developmental programs for BCS schools. I still think that if Jason Calliste had played his Senior season at UDM, instead of Oregon, he would've put up big numbers that seasons. It probably would've helped him have a better overseas professional career. Although playing in Oregon didn't hurt, he would've climbed higher on all of UDM's statistical records.

I remember shortly before Jason announced he was leaving (or should we say snuck out of town, since that's sorta what he did) I had made a post on the other board noting the milestones Calliste was poised to reach or surpass his senior year. Sadly, kids just don't care about that kind of stuff anymore. And from Calliste's standpoint, he got to play in front of huge crowds on national TV, reach the NCAA tournament, and enjoy the perks of Oregon basketball--the cherrywood lockers, deluxe study areas, etc. etc. I fear the era of mid-major basketball may be coming to an end, with some type of split into 1A and 1-AA, similar to football, taking place. Many of our old rivals, teams we thought of as equals when I was a teenager--Dayton, Marquette, Xavier, later Butler--made it to the IA. It doesn't look like we will.

Central Michigan picked up a commitment from Kevin Hamlet, a 6-7 forward from Mineral Area JUCO. Hamlet is a Canadian native who finished his high school career in New Jersey.

Georgia Tech took two MAC bench players as grad transfers in the 2016-17 season. Both of them sat on the bench for GT, combining for less than 200 minutes on the season. But, hey, they got to be part of a Power Five program for a year. (Shrug) Mid major coaches will never be able to relax.

Blue Ribbon predicts the finish this year as: EAST: 1. Buffalo 2. Miami 3. Ohio 4. Kent State 5. Bowling Green 6. Akron
WEST: 1. Eastern Michigan 2. Toledo 3. Ball State 4. Central Michigan 5. Northern Illinois 6. Western Michigan
Our Titans, who are honorary MAC members this year, play Ohio, Kent State, Akron, Eastern Michigan, Toledo, Western Michigan, and probably Bowling Green.

Good mix of opponents for the Titans in the MAC this season. WMU, Akron, and BGU are expected to struggle, but the EMU, UT, and Ohio should all be pretty good. Of course, I have no idea how the Titans will fare as associate members of the MAC this season. Too many unknowns on the Titan roster. I'm hoping for a good season from the Eagles, as my work schedule will probably result in me being free for more EMU games than Titan games when the conference season begins.

The MAC champion was the team most expected, Buffalo. UB was ranked much of the season and finished with a gaudy 32-4 record with a 16-2 league mark. The Bulls spanked PAC 12 Arizona State in the NCAA tourney and that wasn't their most impressive high major win of the year (they beat Syracuse on the road during the regular season). Head coach Nate Oates left New York for Alabama after the season, so we will see if UB maintains their excellence. They have already lost recruits in the class of 2019.
Toledo won the West division with a 13-5, 25-8 record. CMU won 23 games in a better than expected year. Western Michigan started the season with a win over our Titans, but nosedived and finished with eight total wins on the season. EMU had a very disappointing season, seemingly underachieving greatly based on the apparent talent they had.
The Titans played seven games against the MAC, going 1-6. I still think that MAC opponents are good for the non-conference schedule.
