Here is a team made up of guys currently playing in college who either signed with Detroit (and transferred or never enrolled) or at one point gave a verbal commitment to Detroit:
PG: Lorenzo Bonam, Utah - 10.4 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 3.1 apg, .522 3P%
SG: Aaron Simpson, DePaul - 8.3 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 1.9 apg, .490 3P%
SF: Patrick Onwenu, Alcorn State - 8.5 ppg, 3.5 rpg
PF: Brent Calhoun, IPFW - 4.5 ppg, 3.5 rpg, .559 FG%.
C: Coreante DeBerry, Cincinnati - 5.6 ppg, 4.0 rpg, .525 FG%
G: Shy McClelland, South Dakota - 12.0 ppg., 4.2 rpg, 4.0 apg, 1.2 spg, .400 3P%
G: P.J. Boutte, Citadel - 8.9 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 6.1 apg
F: Lacey James, Rider - 1.1 ppg, 1.1 rpg
C - Youssoupha Kane, Lewis Clark State (NAIA) - 5.2 ppg, 4.4 rpg.
That team would be weak up front, heavily reliant on DeBerry to step it up with the added playing time and emphasis he'd get playing at the Horizon level. But there's some good guard play (Bonam would, I think, be a first team all-conference player in the Horizon) and depth at the point, and some good three point shooting. I could see a coach using a three or even 4 guard lineup. A great team? No. Probably a middle pack Horizon team. The key, I think, would be DeBerry, and whether he could give this team 12-15 points and 7-10 rebounds a game. But given that we're only looking at guys who actually signed with or verbally committed to the Titans and are still playing in college, not a bad squad. If one were to fill our 2 currently unused scholarships with Bonam and DeBerry, two guys who verbally committed to us but didn't qualify academically at the time, I think our squad would be the Horizon favorite, or darn close to it.
For the record:
Bonam, Simpson, and James verbally committed to Detroit: Bonam didn't qualify, Simpson changed his mind and signed with DePaul, and James was not cleared to play due to his heart condition.
DeBerry, Calhoun, and McClelland signed with Detroit. DeBerry did not qualify, and that appears to have been the case with McClelland. Calhoun appears to have met NCAA qualifications but not been admitted to UD (which some have claimed was a drummed up effort to free a scholarship to sign Carlton Brundidge).
Boutte, Onwenu, and Kane played for the Titans but transferred out.
