The Detroit Titans (14-12 overall, 8-7 in the Horizon League) can guarantee themselves a winning record this season with a victory over the moribund UIC Flames (5-20, 3-10) Friday night at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago. Tipoff is scheduled for 8:00 P.M. Eastern Time.
The Titans, 5-1 in their last 6 games, are coming off two impressive wins in a row, at home over Milwaukee on Saturday by a score 80-66, and on the road Tuesday night where they vanquished the Northern Kentucky Norse by a 74-68 margin. A noticeable aspect to Detroit’s play recently is the much better team defense. For a team that’s given up 95, 100, 102, 92, and 115 points in games this season, holding teams below 70 in consecutive contests is no small feat. It begs the question: Where was this team for most of the season? For now the Titans are in 5th Place in the Horizon League, a ½ game behind their nemesis, Green Bay. Oh, what might have been...
Then there are the Chicago Flames. The 10th (and last…actually tied for last with Cleveland State) Place Flames are well and truly atrocious, at one point losing 10 in a row and 16 of 17. For Friday’s game, however, UIC is on a hot streak (for them), winning 2 of the last 3 (both at home, over Wright State and Northern Kentucky). Last time out, however, on Tuesday evening, they reverted to form and dropped a double overtime decision, 92-91, to the Youngstown State Penguins in Youngstown. To put it in the crude vernacular of today's youth: UIC sucks. And UIC blows. They suck and they blow. much the same as a reversible vacuum. It's really puzzling because America's Second City (really third city at this point) produces a lot of fine players. UIC may even have a few "players", so to speak. They just aren't on the basketball team. Now don't get me wrong, there's a lot of good basketball being played in Chicago...but none of it at the UIC Pavilion.
Back on January 8th the Titans defeated the Flames rather handily at historic Calihan Hall by an 87-69 tally. No reason they can’t do it again. Seriously…there are absolutely zero reasons.
The bookmakers have set the line at Detroit -7 ½. That’s seems absurdly low. We beat them by 18 in Detroit, so even if you apply the 5 point hometown discount because they are in Chicago, the spread should still be 13…so says the Moose. The Over/Under is yet to be revealed but I’d say 149. The Titans defense has been much better of late, which accounts for the difference from the first game. If you can get an O/U over 149, take the Under; under 149, take the Over; exactly 149, stay away altogether. If you’re strictly spread betting, for heaven’s sake lay the points and take Detroit to cover with a few to spare. The OFFICIAL MOOSE PREDICTION (from the home office in Mooseheart, Illinois): Detroit 83 Chicago Flames 66. GO TITANS!!!
