Good luck Ray. Not happy to see someone fired, but sometimes change creates new possibilities and excitement.

I thank Ray for resuscitating Titan ball. I hope the players and recruits stay committed- I think there is good talent there. I'm a bit concerned if Corey Allen ask to be released from LOI or if guys look to transfer, with the spring signing season right around the corner.

Coach leaves the program in much better shape than he found it, with a talented roster that includes some youth and some good recruits expected to arrive in the summer. I think Vowels is a better AD than KG, so the job is more attractive to other coaches now, I would think. I am concerned about the possible departures of some players, as almost universally our recruits have said the primary reason they chose U of D is because of the head coach. Allen is a guy who has definitely seen his stock rise since he signed his LOI.

Today would be a good day for University to announce that a presser will be held on Monday relating to basketball coaching vacancy.

I still do not understand why Vowels waited nearly four weeks before giving Ray the axe. Now we have the signing period coming up this week and we have a one man coaching staff. I am not impressed with the way this has been handle degrades of who is selected to the HC position.

I am not impressed with the way this has been handle degrades of who is selected to the HC position. As others have said on the other message board, the only reason that Vowels waited so long to dismiss coach Ray is because he was mulling over his decision, or that he already has a replacement in mind, why he's waiting when the late signing period begins April 13th is baffling. You would think he would want to get the staff in place as soon as possible, or maybe the chosen one is already on the job (JJ)?

If JJ is the chosen one and already on the job, then the public, which includes potential recruits and fans like us, need to know. I cannot think of any benefit to delaying the announcement.

It makes no sense at all not to announce the coach if they've got a coach. I doubt that that is the case. Which means while it may be just negotiations, more likely they are in a search mode. Remember, it's been just a week since Ray was dropped.
The question, as you say Larry, is why did we go 26 days between the Horizon tournament loss to Wright State and the termination of Ray? Possibilities: 1. Vowels' fault -- indecisive, not forward enough thinking to be effectively conducting an evaluation during the season; 2. Higher management fault -- if Ray had another year on his contract, which I think he did though I don't know, I could see Vowels needing approval to pay off Ray's salary. It would be in $450K range, and that's a lot for UD and the athletic budget. It likely needed a sign-off at a higher level, and perhaps the foot-dragging/indecisiveness was there; 3. The U was going to keep Ray because it couldn't swallow the final year of his contract, but at some point a donor(s) put up the cash to buy Ray out--this seems very unlikely to me; 4. Titans got into lengthy negotiations over buying Ray out and let them drag on too long.
On March 10, 4 days after the loss to Wright State, Jay Smith was posting for games on the Basketball Traveler's website, which is sort of a Craig's List for coaches trying to schedule. That would seem unlikely if he thought/knew that Ray (and presumably he) were going to be dismissed.
Anyway, does seem like we lost a couple weeks for no obvious reason.

Thanks, Commish, for your "thinking man's" response with multiple options. That is why I come to this forum for intelligent and educated conversation.

I wonder if some candidates are waiting to see what other possibilities open up? Maybe not likely, but there were some recent coaching dismissals that could have a domino effect and open up some other attractive jobs.
Obviously, I'm just speculating. Once the decision to let Ray go was announced, I expected a replacement rather soon. It's only been about ten days, so perhaps things are just taking a normal course. Hopefully we hear something soon.
