Truthfully, except for the outcome of the game, I had a great time at Calihan Saturday night. (And, yes, I realize that's like saying except for the food, the restaurant was great.) I got to see Moose, the Commish, Titan Ben, Rogobob, Titan Andrew and other Titan faithful, including a couple of friends from the neighborhood around campus who have become fans due to me dragging them to the games over the past few years. My Goddaughter, who I took to her first Titan game when she was about three years old, attended the game with me, and brought her almost three year old niece, who made fast friends with Moose. The crowd was certainly loud, and more importantly, very into the game. The announced crowd of 2500 seemed a little high to me, but what they might have lacked in numbers they made up for in participation. Also saw a few local high school coaches and players in attendance. Four elementary basketball teams got to scrimmage at halftime, which was nice for them and their parents. I played in games like that in college halftime settings as a kid, and it was a big thrill for me. I was happy for them and hope we see more of that from time to time. My Goddaughter and her niece gave "thumbs up" on the concessions.
I missed not having a band there like the Chandler Park or Oak Park crews. I was a little disappointed in the size of the crowd. Wayne State probably wishes now that they had given more of an marketing push, given the result. But overall, the game experience was fun.
As far as the game itself, I was not happy. I told a couple of people during the day that the Titans needed to play hard and play well, because the Warriors were going to treat that game like it was a post season tournament. They wanted it, and it showed. They also didn't beat us using any gimmicks. They played us straight up and outperformed and out executed us. I won't overreact because it's an exhibition game that didn't count, and we were short of a full squad. Truthfully, though, there is no excuse for losing at home to a bad D2 team. Coach BA tried to give some justifications in the post game, but they all rang hollow. Jenkins played well, as did Hogan in the second half, and Allen played hard the entire game, which was his pattern in high school. I found it a little troubling that in the second half it seemed like the only way we could score was by posting up Hogan or hitting a three.
Bigger programs than ours have lost to D2 teams in exhibitions in recent years, however, so I'm not worried. I look forward to the next exhibition against Ferris State on November 7.

Thanks for the recap Sam - I appreciate the honesty, although I am a little worried.

Scout, there were certainly reasons for concern, especially if those things are not corrected soon. The optimistic side of me is saying it was an anomaly.
Worst part of the loss is that my Mom, who went to Wayne State is trash talking me. And my Dad, who is of course siding with my Mom, pointed out that WSU has bragging rights as the best basketball team in Detroit until the Pistons move downtown next season.

The best basketball team in Detroit is UD Jesuit. ;-)
