The Phoenix have picked up a transfer from Wheeling Jesuit, Will Ryan's former job, according to Verbal Commits. 6'4" Emmanuel Ansong. Last year at Wheeling, Ansong averaged 14.4 PPG, 40$ 3PG, 61% FT in D-2. He played forward there.

Amari Davis has also entered the transfer portal. That's both of the top two scorers for the Phoenix. :-( Interesting, because Amari stayed last year after the coaching change. This new transfer policy will mark the end of mid-major basketball. I believe this is related to the coaching change at GB. Davis and Jefferson were recruited by Darner to play his RP 40 brand of basketball. (RP 40 = relentless pressure - 40 minutes.) Jefferson had put his name in the portal late after Darner was fired and he then withdrew it. He said that he was considering us. Davis' efficiency fell off significantly under Ryan's system. His shooting percentage dropped from 51% under Darner to 42% under Ryan. Under Ryan, he was required to take 80 3P attempts and made 28% of them. Under Darner, he took just 8. These transfers remind me of Corey Allen's decision to leave us even before BA was fired. He went back to the coach who had recruited him, Ray. But then he got jilted when Hunter and Ray left GA State for Tulane at the end of Corey's sit-out year. While I can't exclude the possibility that there are other issues at GB, both transfers don't surprise me given the differences in coaching styles between Ryan and Darner coupled with Amari Davis' lower efficiency as a player. Note that Ansong, a transfer from Ryan's D-2 job, got more and more minutes as the season progressed. At least, this is another explanation for these decisions.

All schools in the conference, including Detroit, will experience transfers at the end of this season. Some will be expected, others not. These players will be replaced by incoming transfers who will not have to sit out a year. If we continue to attract transfers like Fraser, Johnson, Kuol and Waterman, we’ll be fine.
