Joe Hampton, a top 100 national recruit from Maryland we'd expressed early interest in but probably never had much shot at and did not offer, has given a verbal to Penn State. The first guy to "officially" strike off the list, which appears on page 4 of this thread. If I am a Penn State basketball fan, I would be happy with the news, but also nervous. That 2016 signing day is a long way off, and there is plenty of time for young Mr. Hampton to change his mind, either on his own or through outside influences convincing him he can "do better" than the Nittany Lions. And right you are. Hampton announced this week that he was reopening his recruitment, and got an offer from Virginia Tech. Verbal Commits are scarcely worth the paper they're not printed on.

Yeah, you could see that one coming, especially when the team struggled again this year. Too bad for the Penn State fans. At least they had a few months warning before the early signing period for 2016.

The Titans have reportedly made an offer to 2016 point guard Nelson Kaputo out of Canada. From the Twitterverse: Ian Douglas @hhc_Douglas 2016 Nelson Kaputo of St.Michaels Blue Raiders has been offered by Detroit Mercy! Kaputo finished with 30pts/4Ast against Pine Ridge! #HHC 247sports.com/Player/Nelson-Kaputo-75483

Here's a new highlight video for Al Eichelberger, formerly of Saginaw, currently of Prolific Prep in California. In this clip, I'm not seeing the small forward/shooting guard skills that he was reportedly going out to California to learn.

McFolley and Blackshear's Class of '16 teammate, Brailen Nealy, picks up his first offer, from Oakland. I would hope we are recruiting him. At 5'8", the high majors may take a pass. He looks like a heckuva player.

Carl is kind of interesting. The Prep Hoops Michigan only had him down in the 40s among Michigan's Class of '16 prospects at the start of the season. He seemed to be viewed as an intriguing prospect whose stock could rise. Haven't seen any more recent ratings, but Bell's comment on numbers is noticed. He's a tall, lean forward -- a "stretch 4" as they now say (I'm getting tired of these increasingly narrow definitions -- soon we'll have something like "an attack stretch 4" or a "short game combo guard" or some such nonsense). I saw one article where he said that before this season the UD coaches had told him that he had to gain weight. His coach says he has gained 15 pounds and is building muscle, working heavily on the weights, but it's hard to notice because he's also grown two inches. He is reportedly a good ball handler (and good, not just good "for his size") who can shoot the three. I find good news, in that a) obviously the Detroit coaches have been in good contact with him for a while, and b) they must have decided he is making the physical progress they hoped to see. He doesn't sound like your low post banger, but more like last year's NBA draftee out of Green Bay, Alex Brown. Brown, despite a reputation for choking in clutch games, was a really good player. We've got other offers out for that spot - Al Eichelberger, who seems increasingly unlikely; Danny Pippin; Ty Groce. I always figure as they expand the number offers it probably (though not necessarily) means they're not that optimistic about the offers they've made. But Carl sounds like a guy worth going after - I prefer that type of offer, even if he sees just spot play on our bench for his first two years, to taking chances on rather long-shot juco bigs. And he's obviously smart, with interest from Cornell, Lehigh, and the service academies. Doesn't look like there will be academic issues, and generally I like smart kids. We're his first offer, which might matter, although we've not found that has meant much of an edge in the past. Carl had a fine junior year, individually and in terms of team success. Alma won the district title and finished with 18 wins on the year. He was first team all conference, and got some All state recognition as well. Definitely one to watch. I imagine he'll be at the Titans summer camps. www.almaschools.net/athletics/hs-athletics/winter-sports/boys-basketball/

Per twitter, Ty Groce picked up a recent offer from Cornell.
Prep Hoops Michigan @prephoopsmi · Mar 29 Cornell has provided an opportunity for Ypsi Lincoln (MI.) 2016 sf Ty Groce to play for as he has the grades and basketball ability.

Interesting as Cornell recently got a verbal commitment from New Haven 2016 6-9 center/PF Jerry Ben. Have they developed some Michigan contact? Not obvious with their coaching staff. Ben, by the way, is a Mike Edwards type - he averaged something like 6 points and 7 rebounds as a junior this year and did not make even honorable mention in most all-state teams, but the scouts like him.

He doesn't mention Detroit, but I have to figure the Titans are considering him. scouthoops.scout.com/story/1535646
