In 2016 we would expect (leaving aside the distinct possibilities of transfers in and out and injury redshirts) to have open 4 scholarships, for Brundidge, Wilson, Ackerman, and Kane. The returnees for 2016-17 season would be:
Seniors: Grant, Williams, Jenkins
Juniors: Foster-Smith, Hogan, Bass
Sophomores: James, McFolley, Blackshear
We'll need guards - especially a shooting guard - with Brundidge & Wilson graduating and Williams and Grant entering their senior years. We will always take big men, though if our current frosh and James and Blackshear develop, we'll actually be pretty strong up front. We'll want a small forward to groom to take place of Jenkins.
I want the best players we can get. Realistically, for example, is Cassius Winston a guy we can get? I assume the staff thinks not, which is why I've seen nothing about us recruiting him. Maybe he clearly expressed no interest right from the first contact; less likely, maybe there's been no contact; or possibly we are recruiting him but nobody's mentioned it.
So I don't know who we can get. We've offered Algevon and Turner. To get both those two and Groce would be fantastic. But realistically, those are going to be uphill battles. Indeed, all of the players I have us having offered would be superb gets, but I suspect most of them are no longer being actively pursued - McLean, Aiken, Spellman, definitely Bridges- are probably all off the board for us. If we could get one or two of Eichelberger, Turner and Groce you'd have to be pretty happy. Turner is probably the state's best 2016 point guard; Groce one of the best PFs, and Eichelberger, had he stayed around, perhaps the best. With Al, we may have to hope he doesn't grow - if he's a bit undersized, like Hogan, the bigs might pass. He'd be awesome in the Horizon now.
Cory Allen and Devon Daniels would be excellent options for shooting guards. I don't think Tabin Throgmorton would be nearly as good, but I love his name . I'm a bit surprised we don't seem to be recruiting Tony Poljan, a 6-7 PF from Lansing.
Right now I just don't know who out of state is really on our radar. But a class of Eichelberger, Turner, Groce, and Allen would be a huge coup, a dream class. Pippen (whom we've offered), Daniels, Poljan, 6-8 Kelvon Fuller out of Oak Park, would all be really nice catches.
