This is the same "Major Madness" that has Oakland moving to the MVC and building a new field house. When he or she says "LOTS of chatter out there" he or she never says where...... "Out there." C'mon, man!

"Out There" seems to be where most of the "stuff" comes from these days

Not Davis, but a member of the staff (& I didn't see a convenient thread to post this in)

Why don't all the posters here who know so much about how to help run a successful men's BB program apply to replace Tracy Dildy? Here's your chance!

Hopefully, Coach wii not select another candidate from his Houston Boys Club. This would be a good time for a young, energetic coach from the Metro Detroit area.

However I would gladly step aside for a young Titan alum. With leadership traits. Preferably someone who knows their way around Michigan and Northern Ohio. Reaching out to JH Jr., Ray Mac Jr., Bruinsma, or Mc Folly might be a good idea.

I did get a letter today for the renewal of my season tickets and Titan Club. The people down there looking for $ are doing their jobs.

I didnt know where else to place my thoughts regarding this issue so I put them in this thread. In a recent Detroit News article Mike Davis stated "I want them to be (the last school); so much has to change here to be able to recruit," Davis said. "That's the first thing, you want to recruit kids, but they live in the same dorms that Earl (Cureton) and John Long lived in." (Mike Davis, Detroit News)...why is Mike Davis complaining about student housing heading into his 5th season as the head coach. Did he address this issue during his interview in 2018? Also, he has to know that these type of statements can be used to "negatively" recruit against UofD.
Furthermore, Antoine Davis also made a statement that was insulting to the University that has paid his father over $2,500,000.00 “A normal recruit, going from (Detroit Mercy), and then seeing BYU, K-State, Maryland?” he says, laughing. “I mean, there’d be no chance.” (Antoine Davis, The Athletic). I know the gap between P5 schools and mid/low majors has increased, bit has it increased wide enough to justify a statement like this? In the fall of 1994 a young man by the name of Jermaine Jackson had offers from Wisconsin and Xavier and he chose to attend UofD. He was living in the same dorms that Cureton and Long lived in. The Davis family needs better public relations training or they really dont like the money or the opportunites that have been provided by the University of Detroit Mercy.

The Davis family needs better public relations training or they really dont like the money or the opportunites that have been provided by the University of Detroit Mercy. Let's throw this back at you. Why do you bring it up now, some time after the interview? Why are you repeating negatives? Look, I don't know why he brought it up in this interview---maybe no one asked before. Maybe at Indiana and UAB and Texas Southern he had better facilities and didn't realize how much of a drag that would be in Detroit (and he interpreted it in year one to his late start and in year two to the probation). The time between Earl Cureton and JJ committing was less than half the time that has passed between JJ committing and today. If something was old and dated in 1994 it is decrepit today. And when JJ turned down Wisconsin and Xavier, remember we were in the same conference as Xavier! And as for AD, I mean, really? How often do mid-majors beat out BYU, K State, and Maryland? Is this shocking? Do you think recruits are going to be swayed by AD's comments, or even MD's comments, or by the differences between BYU/KState/Md and UD? Do you think a kid's gonna say, "wow, that's a great campus--as good as BYU's. But the coach says the dorms are no good."? Of course not. He's going to reject the dorms. It's not insulting to state the reality--for us to get blue chippers, there has to be something unique, and in the last two decades that has usually meant a familial connection. It may be a very positive good to raise the problem publicly. I suspect a lot of people either aren't aware of or haven't accepted the reality of recruiting to Detroit. I post a lot of stuff about Titan history, enough that some posters--we're talking to you Mole--ridicule me for it. I do that because nostalgia feels good, but also because I think it's valuable to recall what was, as a goal or reminder of what, perhaps, can be. But to get to what can be, we've also got to be realistic about where we are. And the "has paid his father over $2.5 million" is just a cheap shot. If Davis was the lowest paid coach in the league at $175 per year, you'd have written "has paid his father over $700,000." And I suspect that if for some reason he had agreed to work for $50K a year, you'd have written "has paid his father over $200,000." (Personally, I don't think we want to have the league's lowest paid coach.) AD came back. And he didn't just do it for dear old dad (at least per his public statements). He did it because he decided that he is part of UD now, and couldn't just walk away from that. Let's pocket that, be happy, and hope for a great season. Let's open the wallet to get those upgraded facilities. And if Coach can't produce, let's move on because he can't produce, not because he voices reality or because we think his salary--high for the Horizon but not for college basketball generally and perhaps not for a coach facing the challenges of recruiting to UD, with it's 50 plus year-old dorms and enormous fan expectations--is too high. Season opener in about 144 hours. Go Titans!

Everything they said was true, but I am not a fan of that kind of public criticism of the program. I think you stress those points to boosters, alumni, and school leadership, not necessarily in an article. I imagine that there were good things said about the program by both Coach and AD, but maybe they didn't make the final edit of the article. In Coach's defense, he reportedly has made personal contributions to the fundraising efforts. I think awhile back we had a head coach who was a very good recruiter and actually masked some of recruiting barriers that this program faces. Having said all of that, I totally get your frustration.

Frequently, in a print article, the reader does not get the full context surrounding a comment because the reporter does not provide a verbatim transcript of the entire interview that led to the comment. Or the editor may have deleted some of the context for space reasons. If you follow the pre-season PR thread in the statements from Vowels, Davis and others, one theme is that finally Davis has a normal year - one without unusual obstacles. No late hire, no APR post-season ban, no Covid restrictions causing a screwy HL seeding formula, no loss of 5 HL home games. If asked about the obstacles to recruiting players here, Davis replied truthfully. Finally, the article in question was written by the part-time employee of Oakland who also reports our beat. Even his preview today about our team mentions his employer.
As to Antoine's comment, the excerpt said he was laughing when he made the comment about other schools compared to ours. In context, Antoine decided that he didn't feel right finishing his career at another school even when they had much more dazzling facilities than ours.
Finally, rbj has already made comments like Davis is already setting his excuses for this year when he made some general comment about the need for each player to play within themselves and not try to do things they are not good at doing. I get that he doesn't like Davis. I think there's nothing here that can't be solved by more winning.
I've seen this team practice a few times. If we do not incur any significant injuries and if everyone accepts his role, I think we could be this year's PFW and finish in the HL's top 4. PFW is why you play the games instead of accepting the pre-season opinions of "experts" or feel bound by the performance in any previous season.
Go Titans!

I think one of the issues is MD appears not to be a warm and fuzzy guy, he has been around and has been at some high-end programs, some he can compare different schools and programs. I would prefer if he was a better "salesman" for the school, but it's not him. As said this might be his most "normal" year, let's hope it's a good year. If not I guess it would be time to think about moving on.
