Wow, looks like the luster is off the Detroit vs Oakland game. Actually, attendance was up about 900 from the 2018 game, at just over 4100. Still, that's way down from the first 4 years. A few other thoughts: 1. Attendance continues its steady decline around the league. The Titans were one of the few bright spots last year, but only compared to the awful attendance of 2018. A few years ago, when I first started doing this, there would often be zero or one game with below 1000 attendance around the entire league. Last year there were too many such games for them all to make the top 10. 2. Another bright sign (as such) is that the top 10 list of games is actually better than a couple years ago. So important conference games can still draw well--at least at NKU and Wright State :-(. 3. The drop-off is most notable in non-conference games, perhaps a symptom of the increasing difficulty of scheduling good non-conference games. Certainly it's been a couple years since the league has seen the likes of Virginia at Green Bay, Wisconsin at Milwaukee, and Wichita State at Detroit. 4. But note two games that drew well--Toledo at Oakland and Western Carolina at Wright State. Those were both season openers. It suggests to me that fan interest is highest for that season opener--squandering it on an NAIA or D-III opponent, or even on the road--may be a mistake. Schools that opened on the road didn't do as well in their first home game as schools that opened at home. 5. Cleveland State's program seems to be in a state of near-total collapse. 6. Last year I didn't keep my own records of in-game attendance. To my surprise, conference attendance records from just last year are extremely hard to find. The Horizon League's web site is not as fan-friendly, nor does it have as much info, as just a few years ago.

NCAA numbers are out. The Horizon was 16th in both total home attendance and in average home attendance, though the mix of conferences ahead of us differs slightly. The NCAA's official numbers are a bit different from what I posted above, based, I think, on accounting for post-season play, and probably a couple errors on my part.
Regular Season Average Home Attendance for the Horizon and a few select conferences:
Big Ten 12,691 (1st in nation) Atl. Ten 4790 (9th) MVC 4395 (10th) MAC 2995 (13th) CAA 2434 (15th) Horizon 2396 (16th) OVC 2237 (17th) Summit 1940 (22nd) MAAC 1831 (23rd)
Our Titans ranked 215th overall. As sparse as our attendance is, we beat out 138 teams for average home attendance. The Horizon's top draw, Wright State (4145), ranked #115 overall. Michigan State was 13th and Michigan 24th, rankings determined more or less by the size of their arenas. The lowest average home attendance in D1? 202 at South Carolina State.
Horizon attendance was down by 150 per game, about 6%. Overall, 22 conferences had declines in average attendance. The MAC bucked the trend, with a healthy 7.8% increase, the 4th best percentage increase after the AAC, OVC, and Big South. Total average attendance in D1 regular season (4593) was down by 14 per game--i.e. basically flat.
The MIAA led all D-III conferences, as it does most years, powered by #1 draw Hope and #8 Calvin. The GLIAC was 9th in D-II.

1918 would be prior to the opening of the McNichols campus. The 1917-18 team finished the season 13-5. The Titans beat Michigan State and Dayton, but dropped a couple games to the Detroit Y.
