join the a-10... it helps recruiting and will bring better home opponents to the hall and give us leverage when attempting to book non conference games

With that talk a few months ago about Ilitch building a mixed use area near Woodward/75, and Goers saying he hasn't closed his mind to the idea of moving the Pistons downtown, I think a new basketball and/or hockey arena in that area would be awesome. We could play a few games there, maybe double headers. Restaurants, bars, shopping, and other entertainment might make the idea of going to a game for the casual fan a little more interesting. Hopefully gain some new fans who might find their way over to Calihan. Plus it would be great for the city in general. Of course, there have been plenty of plans like this that have come and gone without a shovel ever hitting the ground.

I don't see us getting an attendance or media coverage bump from joining either the MVC or the A-10. Of course, there are other reasons besides those to join another conference, such as TV money, etc.

Sam maybe we should hire somebody who knows how to get the press we need, example todays ladies game, where's the front page story, it's a pretty big deal, and it's a pre Easter slow saturday news day.

We definitely need to put more effort into marketing, media, publicity, promotions, etc. Over the past few years I have seen more marketing for Oakland's Golden Grizzlies than for our Titans.

There's not a team in the mvc i wouldn't rather watch than the teams we play now. Each has a longer basketball pedigree and the mvc is always rated ahead of the horizen. I think its a step up and if available we should take it. Take the best conference we can get. Be aggressive.

I disagree sam. We market as well as we can. The reality is noone much cares about comming to see wright state or uic. So the press won't write about them.

OK. How would you rank these scenarios? I don't know, maybe this helps sort out priorities.
Team A: Averages about 3400 per game attendance. Has won 20 or more games in 14 of past 15 years with 5 NCAA and 6 NIT appearances. Some of the more prominant teams on the home schedule in the last 5 years have included Temple, Ohio U., Princeton, UAB, South Florida, St. Mary's, Akron.
Team B: Averages about 7000 per game attendance. Over past 10 years has averaged just under 17 wins per season, with 1 NCAA, 1 NIT. Home opponents in last 5 years include Michigan, George Washington, Creighton, Utah, Loyola Marymount, Wichita State, Butler.
Team C: Averages about 3900 per game. Since 2000 it has 2 NCAAs, 2 NITs, but has an average W-L record over the past 10 years of 11-18. Home opponents in the last 5 years include Dayton, Iona, Virginia Commonwealth, St. John's, Mississippi State, Princeton, Siena, and Ohio U.
Team D: Average home attendance about 5000 per game. Over the past 20 years it has made 9 NCAA appearances, and 3 NIT. Top home opponents in the last 5 years include Dayton, Western Kentucky, Valparaiso, and Old Dominion.
Team E: Home attendance approximately 8000 per game. 1 NCAA and 2 NITs in last 10 years, but has had 6 consecutive losing seasons. Home opponents in last 5 years include Xavier, Marquette, Mississippi, Notre Dame, Georgetown and Pitt.
Team F: Averages approximately 2000 attendance. 5 NCAA trips in last 10 years. Top home opponents in last 5 years have included Virginia Commonwealth, Jacksonville, East Carolina and Charlotte.
Those teams, in order, are... . . . . . . . .. .
.
Kent State, Bradley, St. Bonaventure, Murray State, DePaul and Winthrop.

Mac, I know you feel that way, but do you think there are an additional thousands of fans in Detroit who don't go see the Titans now when we are playing CSU, WSU, Green Bay, I-Chicago, Loyola, and Valpo who will come to the games to see us play Creighton, Bradley, the two ISU schools, and Northern Iowa? If the draw of HL teams isn't enough to bring those types of fans in, I don't think the MVC teams are going to draw anymore. We played Drake this year at home and drew 2,047 fans. Our first conference home game of the year was against Milwaukee and we drew 2,315 for that one.

And I guessed which team was DePaul as I read that. :-)

The statistics typically don't matter. The perception matters. I would guess we would get more fans for dayton or xavier than we would for old miss. Just the way it is.

I guess what the real question is we did it before, sure the city changed, but, I don't know if anybody has been mugged at a U of D game, people still go to school there from all over the Metro area, nobody is escorting kids to class, people go to casinos in Detroit, go to plays, go out to eat, has anybody been to Marios on Second Ave lately it jamed. Certainly in the 70.s the area around the school was not South Beach, but people came to games. I think we lost the crowds, because the product got worst, if Detroit"s program grewfrom the 70's like Xavier ot Butler, nobady would even care about anything else. The school went thru a bad time and it effected the basketball product, make the product better, on the floor and who we play and it will grow.
