Speaking of what we want, here's an interesting article about the Marquette head coach and their program. This article supports the contention of Titan Mac, APMichael and others who push the idea that the Titans should do all they can to make big financial investments in the program. There is a note in this piece that explains that MU spends about $286,000 annually on each men's basketball player. I thought you guys might be interested in this. www.twincities.com/sports/ci_22914311/buzz-williams-why-leave-marquette-gophers

I was looking yesterday, during half time of the Michigan game, at basketball expenditures for the Horizon, MVC and A10.
Here they are - these are for 2011, the last season the Department of Education has released - I've based this on 2013-14 conference make-up:
Horizon 1. Detroit: $2,512,082 2. Cleveland State: $2,254,791 3. Milwaukee: $2,150,226 4. Wright State: $2,050,389 5. Loyola: $1,867,018 6. Valparaiso: $1,781,911 7. UIC: $1,519,475 8. Green Bay: $1,449,075 9. Youngstown State: $1,075,158
Atlantic 10 1. Rhode Island: $4,664,098 2. Dayton: $3,978,866 3. Richmond: $3,971,226 4. Duquesne: $3,891,806 5. VCU: $3,803,913 6. Fordham: $3,346,930 7. Massachusetts: $3,254,466 8. St. Louis: $3,101,169 9. St. Joe's: $3,089,503 10. George Washington: $2,800,069 11. George Mason: $2,768,873 12. St. Bonaventure: $2,060,910 13. La Salle: $2,046,119
Missouri Valley 1. Wichita State: $4,644,724 2. Bradley: $3,846,845 3. Northern Iowa: $2,449,710 4. Drake: $2,226,291 5. Illinois State: $2,183,876 6. Evansville: $2,133,520 7. Southern Illinois: $2,063,684 8. Missouri State: $1,899,281 9. Indiana State: $1,704,707
My guess is that VCU's expenditures are going up fast, but maybe not. Note that some schools with relatively little success are spending a lot - that often indicates an effort to upgrade the program (see e.g. Duquesne, and Detroit). Not surprisingly, the better programs year in and year out tend to be among the bigger spenders. Also note that, at least on this one measure, we are much better fit for the Valley than for the A10 - even if you pull Dayton and St. Louis out of the A10. We'd be the #12 spender in the A10, but #3 in the MVC.

i like the valley. i like A10 better, cept that it seems so unstable right now. and i like the 7 even better yet. but the valley appeals to my sense of proportion.

nevertheless, there will be continuing increases in budget expenditures that will be necessary for the success of our program... we will clearly need to augment budgeting to make the jump.

We shouldn't be in a league where more than half the members spent less than $2M, If you fator out the projected NCAA money in the 6 year payout YSU is running their program for about $.5M, it's a joke, we have to get out of there.

Chicago Sun-Times' Michael Osipoff tweets Valpo AD LaBarbera "won't confirm or deny" in talks with MVC.

Ouch. Looks like our name didn't even come up. The Chicago schools have a better market, and Valpo is not far from Chicago and has a better local following than we do. I wonder if those schools reached out to the MVC or if the MVC reached out to them. I'd hate to lose any of those from the HL, especially the Chicago schools.

Detroit would really be a bad fit for the MVC, we're too far east, I think our future is east, I noticed that Manhattan is coming to Detroit for a LaCross game, I don't think we played Manhattan in anything for a long time.

Either way we'll be fine. Neither uic nor loyola has been in the mix for a long time. They are certainly not taking both. An example of how strong the media market card can be. Besides we've been talkinmg about a loyola link for a long time. What's the shock? Not like you to be so demonstrative commish. Whats up with that?

Besides. You don't really expect the sun times to report anything but what they regard as chicago stories do you?
