Lexus Williams has announced that he will transfer out of Valpo for his senior season. Williams made the conference All-Freshman team in 2014, starting 23 games. He tore his ACL before his soph campaign and then had further injuries. He came back last year (2015-16) and played very little, but this year started 20 games, leading the team in steals and being second in assists. In transferring, he indicated a desire to go where he could play, which strongly suggests that he and his coaches saw him behind Nebraska transfer (and Michigan native) Bakari Evelyn next year, as well as rising sophomore Micah Bradford, who was a bit of a disappointment as a freshman. Not a crucial loss, but it will cost depth to a Valpo team that loses Alec Peters, Jubril Adekoya (who missed most of this season anyway), and Shane Hammink.
BTW, that 2014 all-freshman team sort of explains why the Horizon has fallen in conference rankings in recent years. That team featured two great players in Peters and Kahlil Felder. But after that the pickings were very slim, and the rest of the team was Williams, Detroit's Jarod Williams, and Milwaukee's Pat Birt, who transferred after the season. They were all decent players (Birt led Tulsa in minutes played this season) but none were remotely all-conference quality. There are probably 5 freshmen this year on UIC alone better than Williams, Williams, or Birt, and another half dozen or more elsewhere in the league. That's a good sign for the HL.

Valpo made a potentially significant pick up today when Providence transfer Ryan Fazekas announced he would be joining the Crusaders. It is kind of a homecoming for Ryan, who played high school basketball in Michigan City, Indiana. He played 18 minutes per game at Providence last season as a sophomore. He's a good shooter, but didn't get many opportunities on a talented Friar squad. I think that he will have an impact in the Horizon.

Valpo plays UNLV next year in the MVC/MWC Challenge. The benefits of that move are huge, and I am so jealous.
What poor leadership Detroit has had in athletics for such a long time. So many squandered opportunities.

Valpo plays UNLV next year in the MVC/MWC Challenge. The benefits of that move are huge, and I am so jealous. What poor leadership Detroit has had in athletics for such a long time. So many squandered opportunities. Yeah, it's bad enough that Xavier and Butler made the tourney again this year from the Big East, and Loyola rolled all the way to the Final Four. Valpo reaching those heights would almost be too much to bear. Man, we have fallen so far behind. Paying for a lot of years of mismanagement, but what stands out for me in particular is the 80s. We had one winning season that entire decade, and allowed the fan base to dwindle and media attention to cease. Such a blown opportunity, particularly when 80s Detroit PSL and Catholic Leagues were among the richest areas for basketball talent in the nation. What might have been...
