This is a very tough schedule. Realistically, if we win two of 7 on the road (maybe Central Florida and one of two in Toledo, assuming we play the Rockets. If we don't play the Rockets, I'd hope we beat both FAU and Bucknell), that will be decent. I think a team like Rhode Island, for example, we could beat at home, but winning that one on the road will be very difficult. At home, Wichita is a really tough game. So that's 6 losses. I'm not writing off games, but unless this team surprises, I think 7-6 is about the best we can expect on the non-con season. But then, Dick Vitale's first team was expected to be down, and they started 11-1 with wins over UM and MSU.

This isn't really Titan related, but it's an interesting note: Syracuse is going to play Adrian College in November in an exhibition at the Carrier Dome.
Adam Zagoria @adamzagoria 1h Syracuse announced it will play Carleton (Canada) & Adrian (Mich) Nov. 2 and 10 in exhibition games at the Carrier Dome

I believe Joe Kopicki's son played for Adrian a while back.

If the Titans have any interest in adding those last two games available to them, George Washington is advertising for a guarantee game in DC the first week in December, which is open for Detroit. Murray State wants to start a home & home in Murray, no dates specified. Northern Iowa wants to start a H & H and has some early December dates that would work for UD. And Eastern Michigan is still looking to start an H&H that first week December. Arkansas is offering a guarantee during the second week of December that would fit the Titans' schedule, too.

The Titans have the ability to add one more game to our schedule, having scheduled 1 less than the NCAA allows (and usually we schedule the full max). Eastern Michigan advertised yesterday at Basketball Travelers (posted by Kevin Mondro, no less) for a game this year. From their listing:
"Looking at all options. Prefer Home Series (Home and Home - would even consider a 4 Year Deal - Year 1 at EMU, Years 2 and 3 on the Road, Year 4 at EMU). Would also consider $ game or Start a Series on the Road. Nov 25/26, Nov 28/29, Dec 3/4, Dec 13, ..."
The Titans could easily do a game on Dec 3 or Dec. 4 - We play Bowling Green at home on Nov. 30 and South Florida at home on Dec. 6. It's beyond me why we don't try to scoop this up to start a H&H - although it is certainly possible that EMU doesn't want to play us.

A surprise - Detroit will play at Oregon on Nov. 17 in the Legends Classic. Earlier reports from Titan luncheons had the Titans playing VCU in the Classic, and Jon Rothstein had tweeted that the Titans would also play at Villanova. Obviously, one of those was wrong.

You know, I think I would rather play VCU or Nova, but that's still a solid game. It will be interesting to see what kind of team Oregon has this year after losing players to expulsion, graduation, etc.

I think it is hard to make that west coast swing (that 11:00 pm start is awfully tough on our kids - it's 8:00 pm for the Oregonians), and I'd rather see VCU or Nova or UM too. FWIW, ESPN's "way too early top 25 pre-season poll" has Nova #8, VCU #14, Oregon #22, and UM #24.

Maryland Eastern Shore of the Mid Eastern Conference (MEAC) had an RPI of 347 out of 349 last season and was 6-24

Great news. It looks like Carlton Brundidge, CBS's Jon Rothstein, and UM's official press release were all wrong (or, perhaps, things just changed; and in CB's case, he may have been misinterpreted as merely noting that VCU would be in the Legends and a *possible* opponent).
Anyway, playing UM is great.
I don't mind the Eastern Shore match-up at all. It seems designed to set up a Detroit-Toledo final, though I'm a bit surprised Toledo didn't push for UMES in the first round, more or less guaranteeing them a berth in the final for attendance purposes. But they'll play either way, and they are probably shooting for a schedule that gives them an at-large possibility this year. Anyway, like I say, I don't mind it. I don't see us in at-large competition this year, and we've got a tough enough schedule already with Oregon, UM, Wichita St., Ariz. State, probably Toledo, Rhode Island - all on the road save the best of the bunch, Wichita-- to be in at-large anyway if we were to win some of those and get to 22 wins.
Think CB will be psyched for UM? Think Titan fans will be psyched?

Everyone should be psyched about that Michigan game. I know I am. I just sent a note to my brother in law, who is a Michigan grad who played on their 1997 football championship team. Sides will be taken within the family that day.
The Maryland Eastern Shore game will hopefully be a big win for us. We play enough heavy hitters in the non-conference this season. At least that's a game we should win on paper. I was trying to think of when we had spoken recently about MES, then I remembered that is where former Titan target Stephen Spurlock ended up after a prep year.
We've got a really tough schedule, but there are certainly opportunities there to get some major wins. That's a good thing to have. And a schedule like this is certainly a good recruiting tool.

There is an interesting line in this article: www.freep.com/article/20140806/SPORTS06/308060134/michigan-basketball-legends-classic-udmIn 2009 and 2013 the Titans played in the 2K Classic, hosting the subregional in 2013. In 2010 we played in the Legends, same as this year, but hosted the sub-regional. In 2011 it was the CBE Classic. In 2012 we played in the Gotham Classic. All of these tournaments were/are managed by the Gazelle Group. In other words, we're Gazelle Group groupies. As the sponsors of these events find it increasingly difficult to fill out their fields, a good relationship like this is probably a good idea. It sounds like it was a big help in our getting the Michigan game this year rather than one of the other road trips. And hosting these sub-regionals every couple years is apparently a cheaper way to get 2-3 home games than paying guarantees.
