There is an interesting line in this article: www.freep.com/article/20140806/SPORTS06/308060134/michigan-basketball-legends-classic-udmIn 2009 and 2013 the Titans played in the 2K Classic, hosting the subregional in 2013. In 2010 we played in the Legends, same as this year, but hosted the sub-regional. In 2011 it was the CBE Classic. In 2012 we played in the Gotham Classic. All of these tournaments were/are managed by the Gazelle Group. In other words, we're Gazelle Group groupies. As the sponsors of these events find it increasingly difficult to fill out their fields, a good relationship like this is probably a good idea. It sounds like it was a big help in our getting the Michigan game this year rather than one of the other road trips. And hosting these sub-regionals every couple years is apparently a cheaper way to get 2-3 home games than paying guarantees. You know, that's a good way to deal with the scheduling problems that mid majors face. Smart move on the part of Coach Ray and the administration. It has certainly paid dividends.

On Eastern Michigan's schedule: "My goal every year is going to be playing all the local Division 1 teams," Murphy said. "I tried my best to get University of Detroit (Mercy) on the schedule. It didn't work out, but I'm going to keep trying. I think it's good for the players, and the fans to focus on that local competition." www.mlive.com/eagles/index.ssf/2014/08/eastern_michigan_university_me.htmlI wonder what the problem was. UD could take on another non-con game, and EMU had open dates congruent with Detroit's.

On the UDM athletics web page in the basketball schedule there has been another non Division 1 game listed, that being 1 December hosting Aquinas College.

The UDM Web page has listed one more non conference game in the middle of the conference season, January 19 at Northeastern, which now makes a full schedule.

My guess is that that is the first of a home and home, so they'll be on our schedule next year. Not a bad game. I still don't see why we couldn't line up Eastern Michigan, which at one time was advertising for games on the same dates we were. If we're looking at an early start on 2016, then, it looks like we'll probably have Northeastern and Central Florida at Calihan, Oral Roberts and maybe Bowling Green on the road. Add four games for an exempt event with the Gazelle Group, our apparently mandatory 1-2 NAIA games, and the non-con schedule is about two-thirds done.

Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Pre-Season Coaches' Poll puts Aquinas 6th, Siena Heights 8th, and Marygrove 12th in the 12 team NAIA conference. The Titans play Siena Heights and Marygrove in exhibitions at the start of next month, and face Aquinas in the regular season in December.

If you want to do some scouting of future opponents tonight, Oral Roberts plays Oklahoma on ESPNU and Arizona State plays Marquette on Fox Sports 1.

This is a very tough schedule. Realistically, if we win two of 7 on the road (maybe Central Florida and one of two in Toledo, assuming we play the Rockets. If we don't play the Rockets, I'd hope we beat both FAU and Bucknell), that will be decent. I think a team like Rhode Island, for example, we could beat at home, but winning that one on the road will be very difficult. At home, Wichita is a really tough game. So that's 6 losses. I'm not writing off games, but unless this team surprises, I think 7-6 is about the best we can expect on the non-con season. But then, Dick Vitale's first team was expected to be down, and they started 11-1 with wins over UM and MSU. Commish, I thought this post from July was worth re-visiting. I know the schedule wasn't complete at the time, but the fact remains this has been a very tough non-conference slate. Might want to dial back on that a little next season. :-)
