Looks as if Michigan is NIT-bound. Howard is no Beilein, that's for sure. Well, let's give him some time. Beilein's first four years at Michigan: 2007-08. 10-22, 5-13. 9th in the Big Ten. No postseason. 2008-09. 21-14, 9-9. 7th in the Big Ten. Round of 32. 2009-10. 15-17, 7-11. 7th in the Big Ten. No postseason. 2010-11. 21-14, 9-9. 4th in the Big Ten. Round of 32. Howard's first four years at Michigan 2019-20. 19-12, 10-10. 9th in the Big Ten. The pandemic cancelled the NCAA tournament, but Lunardi had the Woverines as a 5 seed in his final projection. 2020-21. 23-5, 14-3. 1st in the Big Ten. Ranked #4 in the final AP poll. Big Ten regular season champ. Elite 8. 2021-22. 19-15, 11-9. 7th in the Big Ten. Late season push got them into the NCAA tournament. Sweet Sixteen. 2022-23. Currently 17-14, 11-9. 5th in the Big Ten. Likely NIT. Howard clearly had a better first four years. Might be a little early to be making any definitive comparisons. Time will tell.

I love it that Michigan fans are disgruntled one year after back-to-back Elie 8/Sweeet 16 runs. Personally, I wouldn't mind a couple more UM NIT bids in the next couple years forcing Juwan out, just in time to take the U of D job when Coach Davis retires.

Of course he did. Beilein inherited a train wreck from Tommy Amaker, who never advanced to an NCAA tournament. Howard inherited a Beilein program that won two Big Ten Conference championships (2012, 2014), two Big Ten tournament championships (2017, 2018), two Final Four teams (2013, 2018) and nine NCAA berths in 12 seasons. How many of Beilein's players did Howard have in 20 and 21, his two best years? In addition to acting like a horse's a## at least once or twice every season?

Amaker won 22 games each of his last two years at Michigan, and was NIT runner up one year and made the NIT second round the other year. That's not great, but there's no need to try to oversell how bad it was. It wasn't a train wreck. Regardless of how much you want to blame Amaker, it's fact that Belein had two losing seasons in his first four, even though he had 15 years of D1 head coaching experience when he took the Michigan job. That's on him. Just like Howard's two worst seasons in his first four are on him, even though he was a brand new head coach. And the players he coached are all "his" players, just like all the players Beilein coached are "his" players. Beilein was a great coach for Michigan. I'm not trying to downplay what he did. I'm just saying that it's too early to say who will be a better coach in the long run, particularly when you compare their early returns at the same school.

It was less than a year ago that Michigan was in the Sweet Sixteen after beating highly favored Tennessee. Two years ago was a Big Ten championship and an Elite Eight appearance. Yet, some Michigan fans really ready to throw that out and start over with someone knew because of a 17-15 season that saw a team dependent on several freshmen and sophomores after losing their senior point guard to a season ending injury. Seems a little soon to make a change to me.

Seems a little soon to make a change to me. I was only slightly joking about seeing JH come to UofD if he's pushed out at UM in a couple years. I think he'd be an excellent fit, would recruit Chicago, Michigan and especially Detroit well, and could look a recruit and that recruit's mom in the eye and say "Hey, I sent my own kid to UofD long before I got this job. He was part of an NCAA and an NIT team, he got a great education, and he was able to play professionally after college."

I guess we shall see, just more of a Beilein fan than a Howard fan.
Maybe Amaker wasn't a "train wreck." But schools with Michigan's money and tradition expect far more than NIT berths. Which is why he was fired, I guess.

Nearly 10 minutes into the Northwestern / Penn State game and it's 6-6.
Competitive games regularly in the Big Ten but some are pretty tough to watch.
Was good to see Michigan go through a similar awful half yesterday though. That always brings a smile to my face.

Official Big Ten Preseason Poll: 1. Indiana 2. Illinois 3. Michigan 4. Michigan State 5. Purdue 6. Ohio State 7. Iowa 8. Rutgers 9. Wisconsin 10. Maryland 11. Penn State 12. Minnesota 13. Northwestern 14. Nebraska Final Big Ten Standings: 1. Purdue 15-5, 29-6 2. Northwestern 12-8, 22-12 3. Indiana 12-8, 23-12 4. Michigan State 11-8, 21-13 5. Iowa 6. Maryland 7. Illinois 8. Michigan 9. Rutgers 10. Penn State 11. Nebraska 12. Wisconsin 13. Ohio State 14. Minnesota Northwestern was a pleasant surprise, picked to finish 13th and finishing second. Ohio State was shockingly bad, while Michigan failed to make the Big Dance and fell in the second round of the NIT. Purdue had a great regular season but became just the second #1 seed to fall to a #16 seed in the NCAA tournament. Indiana lost their senior starting point guard for half the season, but still finished a strong third and won a game in the tournament. Penn State was almost as big a surprise as Northwestern, finishing ninth in the league and upsetting Texas A&M on the way to the round of 32. Michigan State made the Sweet Sixteen. That NCAA title drought since Michigan State won it is getting longer and longer for the Big Ten.

Point guard Xavier Johnson received approval from the NCAA for last season to be considered a medical redshirt, so he'll be back on the court for the Hoosiers next season. Johnson played in only 11 games last season.
The Hoosiers lost three players in the portal, the most significant being Tamar Bates, who averaged 6 points per game. They are losing Trayce Jackson Davis and Jalen Hood Schifino to the pros. They add two four-star guards from the high school ranks and have brought on three power forward/center transfers from Oregon, Miami FLA, and Ball State. Johnson's experience will be important.

Chris Collins has a pretty sweet gig. In ten years as head coach at Northwestern, he's had 7 losing seasons. In those 7 seasons, he finished 10th, 10th, 9th, 10th, 14th, 13th, and 12th om the Big 14 standings. In one of his non-losing seasons, he finished 9th. However, in 2016-17 and 2022-23, the Wildcats made the NCAA tournament and won a game. Collins got a three year extension from the University this week.
The moral of the story is, sometimes the best place for a coach to be is a bad basketball program at a University with no expectations and very few demands. Nice work if you can get it.
