North Carolina over Ohio State today in an overtime classic, 89-84. The Heels were down 10 with 7:54 to go in the second, rallied to take a brief lead late, fell behind by two with a second left, and inbounded the ball with that second on the clock to Pete Nance and he hit a jumper to send it into overtime. The Heels took control in the last two minutes of the extra session. Monster game for Amando Bacot, with 28 points, 15 rebounds, and 3 assists. The Heels started the season with a five game winning streak, lost four in a row, and have now won three in a row. If you heard loud cheering somewhere in the distance this afternoon, it was probably me or Titan Tar Heel reacting to that Nance jumper.

It’s a long long season and they obviously have as much experience as you can have but…the start of the season wasn’t ideal, although it was a meat grinder scheduling wise combined w the kids demands as student athletes.

North Carolina lands four star center James Brown for the class of 2024. Brown is a traditional center measuring out at 6-10, 230. Seeing the success of center Armando Bacot in the Carolina system likely influenced his decision. n.rivals.com/content/athletes/james-brown-276464?view=pv

Kid is #2 in the class and best recruit (ratings wise) they’ve gotten since Cole Anthony. They haven’t beaten out other big time blue bloods for a top five recruit in forever. By all accounts Coach Davis is a good guy who is connecting with the kids, with a big part being that he is a good guy. I like that.

NC has had a NYC pipeline for 50 or 60 years going back to Larry Brown, Doug Moe, and Billie Cunningham. Ian Jackson may renew that relationship.

Jackson is at Cardinal Hayes HS. Other Cardinal greats were Jamal Mashburn, Kevin Loughery and George Carlin.

Head coach Mike Brey of Notre Dame will step at the end of the season. 23 seasons. A great career.

ACC mid season check in:
At this point in the season, the top five teams in the ACC are Clemson, Virginia, Miami, North Carolina and Pitt. Clemson and Pitt, picked 10th and 13th, are greatly exceeding expectations. Louisville's struggles weren't expected, even in a rebuilding year, and Notre Dame's 1-9 start in conference play probably is contributing to Mike Brey's decision to step down after the end of the season. UNC won 5 in a row to start the season, lost four in a row immediately after, and have won 10 if 12 in their most recent span. Looks like they will be a tough out in the NCAA tournament. Florida State's struggles were unexpected, but in context they have spend much of the season playing shorthanded due to injuries and a curious NCAA decision to suspend a player for 16 games. The ACC has some good wins in the non-conference season.

Is Wong the guy Miami bought from Kansas State? Guess they got their money's worth.

Is Wong the guy Miami bought from Kansas State? Guess they got their money's worth. No, the guy they got from Kansas State is Nigel Pack. Wong is the guy who publicly threatened to leave Miami if they didn't sweeten his NLI deal after Pack signed. He felt he was underpaid and didn't mind telling the world.

Boston College coach Earl Grant received a two year extension. In his first two years of rebuilding the BC program (and trying to shake off the Al Skinner curse) he has gone 13-20 and 16-17. The Eagles finished this season 9-11 in the ACC, the most wins they've had in league play in over a decade. They also had three wins over ranked teams this season. BC has a good core returning, if they stay out of the portal.
Grant previously spent 7 years as head coach at Charleston. He obviously laid a good foundation for them.
