Surprising to see the Domers and Card at the tail end of this ranking.

I didn't root for Louisville when Pitino was coaching, but they were one of my favorite teams during the late 70s and 80s. I have t-shirts that celebrate their championships in 1980 and 1986. Pitino soiled the program, but they kept him around because he was winning. I thought they fired Chris Mack too soon, and I hoped that hiring Kenny Payne, who played for Denny Crum's 86 title team, would get things on track. Unfortunately, it looks like Payne might not last, even though his second season as coach hasn't officially started. For the season year in a row, Louisville lost to a D2 team in an exhibition. This, despite the fact that Louisville brought in the top ranked recruiting class for 2023. The struggles are hard to understand. This is Payne's first head coaching job in college, but he has a lot of assistant coach experience and was Cal's associate head coach at Kentucky for six years. Nolan Smith, who was an assistant at Duke for six years, is an assistant coach under Payne. Also on staff is Danny Manning, who struggled as head coach at Wake Forest, but at the very least is an experienced head coach who took Tulsa to the NCAA tournament in his second year as head coach there. They should be better. It's a puzzling situation. I'm hopeful the Cardinals right the ship, but I have serious doubts. www.courier-journal.com/story/sports/columnists/c-l-brown/2023/10/30/louisville-kentucky-wesleyan-college-basketball-kenny-payne-kfc-yum-center/71350332007/

In the latest edition of the best rivalry in college basketball (likely the best rivalry in college sports period), North Carolina topped Duke over the weekend. It was an exciting game, with Carolina taking a ten point halftime lead and basically staying in control the rest of the way. According to ESPN, Armando Bacot became the first player in over twenty years to get 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists in a Duke/North Carolina game. He finished with 25 points, to go with the 10 boards and 5 assists, while Harrison Ingram put up 21 points, 13 boards, and 4 steals.
Tar Heel Nation was disappointed by last season, which saw UNC miss the tournament after being a preseason #1 pick. Looks like the team learned some hard lessons from that, and took those lessons to heart this season. They are looking much better this season.

And then UNC loses to Clemson at home tonight for only the second time in 62 games.

And then UNC loses to Clemson at home tonight for only the second time in 62 games. Yep. I had a feeling a letdown was coming, but I thought they'd still have enough to beat the Tigers at home. Oh, well.
