Official ACC Preseason Poll: 1. North Carolina 2. Duke 3. Virginia 4. Miami 5. Florida State 6. Notre Dame 7. Syracuse 8. Wake Forest 9. NC State 10. Clemson 11. Louisville 12. Boston College 13. Pitt 14. Georgia Tech Player of the Year: Armando Bacot, North Carolina Final 2022-23 standings: 1. Miami 29-8, 15-5 2. Virginia 25-8, 15-5 3. Duke 27-9, 14-6 4. Clemson 23-11, 14-6 5. Pitt 24-12, 14-6 6. NC State 23-11, 12-8 7. North Carolina 23-11, 11-9 8. Wake Forest 9. Syracuse 10. Boston College 11. Virginia Tech 12. Florida State 13. Georgia Tech 14. Notre Dame 15. Louisville It was a down year in the ACC. Five teams made the NCAA tournament, despite seven league teams winning 20 plus games and finishing over .500 in conference. That's usually enough to get a Power Five team in the Dance, but the ACC suffered from a lack of Quad 1 wins. Never been a fan of the Quad concept in selecting teams for tourney, as it seems to be a pretty inexact concept. A Quad 1 win in December might be a Quad 3 win in February. Duke won the ACC tournament, which made Kirky happy and me sad. Miami had the best tournament showing, making it to the Final Four. Virginia fell in the first round. Virginia Tech and Clemson accepted bids to the NIT. North Carolina did not, which caused a bit of discussion. North Carolina became the only team in history to be ranked as preseason number 1 to not make the NCAA tournament. Of course, I'm a Tar Heel fan and kind of biased, but I believed they were snubbed on Selection Sunday. I think the ESPN and Fox Sports talking heads had been beating that "UNC won't make the tournament" so much that it had an effect on the committee. The Heels, at 20-13/11-9, with no bad losses, was among the "First Four Out" while "Last Four In" Mississippi State was 21-13/8-10 in the SEC, with a worse NET than UNC and losses to Georgia, Drake, and Florida. Nevada was also among the Last Four In, with a record of 22-11, having dropped four of their last six games in the regular season, including the last three. (Okay, that's been burning me up since Selection Sunday. Thanks for letting me vent.) Georgia Tech said goodbye to Coach Josh Pastner, Jim Boeheim stepped down at Syracuse, Mike Brey stepped down at Notre Dame. Like I said, a down year for the ACC, but still an entertaining one in a great basketball conference.

North Carolina is still stinging over becoming the first preseason #1 team to miss the NCAA tournament, and to their credit, they aren't standing still. Amando Bacot and RJ Davis announced that they would be returning next season, Davis for his senior year and Bacot for his bonus Covid year. The vast majority of North Carolina fans I talk to are glad to have them back.
The portal has been active for them in both directions. Six players left via the portal, most notably starting guard Caleb Love. While Heel fans will always love Caleb for the wins over Duke in 2022, general consensus appeared to be that a change would be good for both sides. The other departures were players who saw limited action, which Coach Davis was sometimes criticized for. We'll see how they do elsewhere; four of them went to power conference teams.
Coming in via the portal are four (as of now) players who were highly sought after transfer targets. They include Stanford's Harrison Ingram, Notre Dame's Cormac Ryan, Louisville's Jae'Lyn Withers, and Brown's Paxon Wojcik. The good news is that all four of them were significant contributors on their teams this past season, with Ingram, Ryan, and Wojcik all averaging double figures in points. The bad news is, they all came from losing teams, except for Paxon, who was on a 14-13 team. Still, it's quite possible that three of the four could start alongside Bacot and Davis when the season begins. The Heels also added a couple of four star high school recruits and are continuing to work the portal for next season.
Big year on the way in 2023-24 for the Tar Heels, as the goodwill Hubert Davis earned in that first year trip to the title game evaporated quickly.

A few ACC notes today:
Donnie Freeman, a top 40 recruit in the class of 2024, verbally committed to Syracuse. That's the first notable high school recruit for new 'Cuse head coach Adrian Autry.
Rising junior D'Marco Dunn of North Carolina has entered the transfer portal. These Tar Heel transfers are interesting; most of them didn't do much for the Heels (Dunn averaged 2.7ppg) but Coach Davis faced quite a bit of criticism for not playing his bench enough. There could be some guys on the way out who could flourish with more of an opportunity. Or maybe Davis saw something that outsiders didn't. We'll see.
NC State is really making use of the portal. Coach Keats has landed transfers from Butler, Kansas, Clemson, Missouri, and Arizona State. Only one, the ASU kid, is on a second transfer, but he's been in college for four years and may be a grad transfer. The mix of players include some young potential up front and a couple of double figure scoring guards. Look for Keats to be one of those coaches who really leans into the transfer portal. Over the past few years, he's had several highly ranked high school players commit to the Pack but never suit up for them.
Louisville, coming off a nightmare season, is doing a roster overhaul. They have the #6 rated class of 2023, with a five star recruit, three 4 star recruits, and a high scoring JUCO. (Curtis Williams of Birmingham Brother Rice is one of those 4 stars.) They also have done okay in the portal, landing three players, with former USC Trojan Tre White being the perceived best of the bunch. Still, they've got a long climb to get back to respectability.

More off season Tar Heel news, and this is significant: Class of 2024 five star UNC commit Elliot Cadeau has reclassified to the class of 2023 and will be enrolling at Chapel Hill next week. Cadeau is a highly regarded point guard who has been dominant in high school and on the AAU circuit this Spring. Sometimes reclassification doesn't work out for players; see recent examples such as Emoni Bates. Cadeau, however, is going to be 19 when the 2023-24 school year starts, so he is probably better suited to skip that senior year. If he's ready, he could be just what the Heels need. www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/37760000/north-carolina-hoops-recruit-elliot-cadeau-enroll-early

The UNC backcourt was looking a little crowded, prior to Wilcher's decision. www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/37808633/recruit-simeon-wilcher-decommits-north-carolina

North Carolina recently added another piece, picking up West Virginia transfer James Okonkwo. The 6-8, 240 forward appeared in 31 games for WVU, averaging roughly 3 points and three boards in 11 minutes per game. He will be a junior in the 2023-24 season. UNC is looking to him to provide some depth and experience off the bench. The Heels still have two open scholarships. www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/4897777/james-okonkwo

Yes the Atlantic Coast Conference is apparently thinking about Washington and Oregon as expansion targets. Those 1980s conservatives apparently were right when they complained that schools weren't teaching geography anymore! Pretty soon we'll have just one super, mega-conference. It will be called the NCAA.

North Carolina's athletic director takes offense to the FSU president's public comments expressing a desire to leave the ACC. Per the UNC AD: You can leave if you want to, but not until you pay the $120 million exit fee and wait until the grant of rights agreement expires in 2036. Even within these big conferences, you have different attitudes among the members. UNC, for example, has a "let's do what is best for the conference" attitude, while FSU's public stance is "screw the rest of the league, give me money!" It's ugly. www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/38129880/unc-ad-bubba-cunningham-critical-comments-florida-state-president
