Trevor Manuel announces he'll be attending Olivet College. I heard he has some connection with the coach there and wanted to play for him. I'm pretty sure this was Steve Bell's surprise transfer news. Olivet College? That's extremely surprising.

He must have a great relationship with that coach. I imagine that any of the state of Michigan mid majors would have been glad to take him. Hard to figure.

Haven't been able to find any information on where he is or what he is up to. He has been on a strange trip, going from Lansing Sexton to Oak Hill Academy to Lansing Everett to Oregon to Loyola Marymount to Olivet to who knows where? Wherever he is, I hope he is doing well. On a related note, Jalen Adams, a Saginaw native who originally signed with St. Bonaventure and was once a Titan recruit, played at Olivet this past season. He averaged 26 points per game and made third team D3 All America.

I wondered where he was going to end up. Surprising that he would go "up" after struggling in the MAAC, and I'm kind of surprised that Northern Illinois would be interested. Perhaps his health issues were holding him back last year and there are indications that those are in the past for him now. I hope it all works out for him. NIU's twitter account posted a pick of Lacey James in his uniform with the caption "Happy Birthday @laceyjames10! We can't wait to finally have you on the floor this year!" I hope his health concerns are in the past and that he has a solid career. Considering his previous health issues and the fact that last year was his first significant basketball action in two years, James had a solid first year at NIU. I'm happy to see him do well. If his health holds up, they are probably expecting more from him this season. www.niuhuskies.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4762

He averaged 26 points per game and made third team D3 All America. The Lansing State Journal had an article about Trevor Manuel. It's a good read. Per this, Manuel had to sit out last season at Olivet because not enough of his classes transferred over. Looking back, there were some questionable decisions made during the course of Trevor's career, starting with his decision to leave the State for a prep school. His stock and profile fell after that move, but he salvaged his high school career returning to Lansing and playing well during his senior year. Then he really started moving around. Per Trevor and his Dad, he wants to be more of a Kevin Durant type than a traditional 6-10 player, which he points to as a reason for all of the movement during his career. I sometime contrast the careers of Manuel and Deyonta Davis. Davis was a somewhat late bloomer who stayed in state and ended up ranked a five star player and accepted an offer to Michigan State. He had one non-descript season with the Spartans and then declared for the draft. He will make $1.3 million with the Memphis Grizzlies in this upcoming season, his third NBA campaign. Manuel was thought to be the better player when they were younger, but seemed to plateau as a player and this upcoming season at Olivet will be his only full season of college ball. As an aside, both situations show how recruiting and signing a highly ranked player sometimes results in less bang for the buck than the college coach might expect. www.lansingstatejournal.com/story/sports/columnists/graham-couch/2018/07/08/trevor-manuel-oregon-loyola-olivet-couch-column/762075002/

Anybody know where Jeron Rogers was last season (2017/18)? He played one season at Cleveland State (15/16) and transferred to Oakland CC and played one season (16/17). Now I see he's looking for a team and wants to play closer to home (it appears he's currently in Texas - I wonder if he knows Davis and son?). At 6'7", he could fill a need for a season or two, he had mid to mid major+ level interest out of high school, plus we have plenty of scholarship still left to give...

I thought Rogers would be a good player but he seems to have stagnated after his junior year of high school. Even if we could track him down, I'm not sure how much he'd help. He did have decent stats his year at OCC (11.8 ppg, 6.7 rpg).

When I saw Rogers play as a freshman at CSU, I was surprised that he wasn't a better player, especially considering he is carrying the genes of Carlos Rogers. :-)

On the surface, he would seem to be an acceptable use of a scholarship, depending on how he looks in workouts and what he did this past season. Seems like we are still have some openings, especially in the frontcourt, and I like the idea of keeping local guys home if the talent is equal. Of course, we never know what is going on behind the scenes with recruiting, i.e., who might have already committed, who is in the process of being cleared for eligibility and acceptance, etc. The next few weeks will be interesting.

Early 2015 Titan target Khari Willis is getting a lot of time at defensive back for the Michigan State football team this season, in part due to injuries at the position. He's playing well. Made a couple of plays in the big MSU win over the Wolverines last week. Former Titan recruit Khari Willis is starting at defensive back for the Spartans and was also named team captain for the season. Nice to see him doing well. I still wonder what he would have been like as a college basketball player, but he is shining as a football Spartan. Edit: And 15 minutes after I made that post, Willis intercepted a pass and returned it twenty yards. :-)
