Re: UIC at Wright State
I watched this game on ESPN2. It was a war. The three UIC players were ejected for leaving the bench area when it looked like Loudon Love and Jordan Blount might get into an altercation at the far end of the court from the UIC bench. Love was called for an offensive foul against Blount and did not like the call. He was then assessed a technical. Both players had fallen to the floor during the original foul by Love which was a moving 280 lb screen. Boahen, Wiley and Bissanthe followed their coaches on to the floor to see what was happening. Those 3 players were ejected. There was no fight between the teams other than the physical play on the court. Of the three 7 pm games, this was the best one to watch.

Arizona State just lost at home to Princeton. In their previous game, the Sun Devils beat #1 Kansas. I LOVE college basketball.
Spoiler Alert: The Packard Automotive Scoreboard committee will have multiple options to consider for the Mid Major win of the Day.

Saturday, December 29 Horizon Green Bay 92, Milwaukee 82. Milwaukee jumped out to a 14-2 lead and stayed in front into the second half. but Green Bay was just a whole lot better in that second half, and gradually took the lead and pulled away. Free throws were the key--the visitors took 20 more foul shots than Milwaukee and outscored the home team 27-10 from the line. The win left visiting teams 4 for 5 in the first wave of Horizon games. Sandy Cohen had 28 for Green Bay (7-7, 1-0). Darius Roy led Milwaukee (5-9, 0-1) with 25.
Titan Non-Conference Opponents #5 Kansas 87, Eastern Michigan 63. Eastern (6-7) gets smoked, despite 15 points and 14 rebounds from James Thompson. The rest of the Hurons shot 26%.
Xavier 74, DePaul 65. Xavier (9-5) closed out the game with a 9-2 run in the final two minutes. Naj Marshall had 19 points and 14 rebounds for Xavier--you'll recall he missed the Detroit game. DePaul is 8-4, but could be another long Big East season.
Florida 77, Butler 43. I thought Florida would win this game, but the margin was a surprise--especially given that Butler (9-4) had beaten the Gators on a neutral floor last month. But the Gators (8-4) scored the first 21 points of this game and racked up 4 block and 4 steals by the 12 minute mark of the first half.
Toledo 77, Penn 45. The Rockets (12-1) trailed by 3 with five minutes left in the first half, but outscored Penn 55-20 the rest of the way. The win was Toledo's 10th straight, and halted Penn's 6 game winning streak. Penn is 10-3, including wins over Miami, Villanova, and at New Mexico, so this was a pretty impressive win for Toledo.
Dayton 94, Georgia Southern 90. Josh Cunningham had 25 points and Jalen Crutcher made 4 free throws in the final 13 seconds to thwart a late Georgia Southern rally. Both teams are now 8-5.
Other Games #8 Michigan State 88, Northern Illinois 60. This game was pretty much over by halftime, with MSU ((11-2) up 24. Cassius Winston had 24 points.
#3 Tennessee 96, Tennessee Tech 53. #6 Nevada 86, Utah 71. Nevada (13-0) pulled away in the second half, to finish their non-conference slate unbeaten.
#12 Auburn 95, North Florida 49. #13 Ohio State 82, High Point 64. #14 North Carolina 82, Davidson 60.
#16 Kentucky 71, Louisville 58. Kentucky opened up this rivalry game with an 11-0 run midway through the first half.
Princeton 67, #17 Arizona State 66. Arizona State's comedown from their win over #1 Kansas was as quick as, well, their next game. Richmond Aririguzoh hit a pair of free throws with 25 seconds left to give Princeton (7-5) its final lead in a see-saw game. Detroiter and former Cleveland State Viking Rob Edwards missed a jumper for the win with 2 seconds remaining. I've got to get over to a couple PU games in January. #19 Mississippi State 103, BYU 81. Quindarry Weatherspoon led the rout with 27 points. #21 Buffalo 87, Canisius 72. The tough job of being even a successful mid-major: Buffalo (12-1) entered last week unbeaten and ranked #14. They beat Syracuse in the Carrier Dome by 12, then lost at #20 Marquette on Markus Howard's career night, and they dropped 7 spots in the polls. Tonight they took it out on neighboring Canisius (3-8).
#22 Houston 80, NJIT 59. I may take in some NJIT games, too, if I can figure out where they are located. NJIT is 11-3 after the loss. Houston stays unbeaten (13-0). Houston has won 26 straight at home, the longest streak in the country.
#24 Iowa 72, Bryant 67.
Seton Hall 76, St. John's 74, St. John's entered as one of 5 unbeaten teams in the country, yet still unranked. What do they have to do to get some respect? Maybe beating Seton Hall will do it. It looked like a Johnnies win was in the offing, with St. John's leading most of the way, but Shavar Reynolds hit a three at the final buzzer to snatch the victory for Seton Hall (10-3) .
Syracuse 81, St. Bonaventure 47. Purdue 73, Belmont 62. Notre Dame 63, Coppin State 56. The Irish are 10-3. Coppin State (0-15) is one of two winless teams left in D1.
East Tennessee State 79, Furman 56. ETSU (11-4) dominated Furman (12-2) in a Southern Conference opener.
Mid Major Win of the Day An excellent day for mid-majors, with lot of candidates... The usual high-major suspects lost: Gardner-Webb 73, Wake Forest 69 Liberty 73, UCLA 58. Texas Southern 88, Texas A&M 75. Santa Clara 79, Washington State 71 Florida Atlantic 73, Illinois 71 (OT) Seattle 82, California 73
And of course there is Princeton's win over Arizona State, noted above. but the winner is... Western Kentucky 83, #15 Wisconsin 76. Taeviean Hollingsworth scored 22, freshman stud Charles Bassey added 19, and freshman Delano Banton had 13 rebounds and 10 assists in WKU's win. The Hilltoppers are just 7-6, but also have wins over West Virginia and Arkansas. Ben Davison had 26 points and Ethan Happ had 20 points and 12 boards for Wisconsin (10-3).

Sunday, December 30 The nation's P6 teams were, for the most part, off today, but there were some good mid-major games.
Horizon Detroit 73, Cleveland State 61. Nothing wrong with starting the season 2-0 on the road. It would be sort of churlish to note flaws in the Titan performance. So just on the good side: It was nice to see a couple of low percentage foul shooters--Hamrick and Blackshear--knock 'em down in the final minute to clinch the win, and it's good to see other Titans pick up the scoring slack on a tough night for Antoine.
Josh McFolley's 15 points moved him past Dick Dzik and into a tie with Jon Goode for 24th on the Titans' all-time scoring list. Dick Dzik was the Titans' star in between All-Americans Dave DeBusschere and Dorie Murrey. In 1964 he averaged 21.7 points and 20.8 rebounds, 3rd in the nation. The Titans led the country in scoring that year with 96.1 points per game. Jon Goode was a four year player who averaged 19.3 points per game during the difficult 2008 season. [EDIT 1/1/19: Oops! I counted Josh's points tonight twice. He is actually still 1 point behind Dzik and 15 behind Goode]. McFolley had three steals and has moved past Ray McCallum into 4th on the Titans all-time list. He needs just 17 more to become the Titans' all time leader.
Oakland 76, Youngstown State 74. Oakland (6-9, 2-0) got the double road wins to start the season when Kamari Newman hit a three with 22 seconds left to play, and YSU's Devin Morgan missed a three with 2 seconds left. Oakland led for most of the early going, but YSU came back from 11 down to take the lead by a point midway through the second half. Oakland responded with a 12-2 run, then it was the Penguins turn, with a 14-2 spurt leaving them up three with just over two minutes to go before the Grizzlies scored the final 5 points. Oakland made 20 of 22 foul shots and hit 55% from the floor. YSU also topped 50% from the floor, but made just 9 of 18 foul shots. Brad Brechting emerged with a big game for Oakland with 19 points on 7-9 shooting from the floor and 5-5 from the line. Darius Quisenberry had 21 for the Penguins (4-11, 0-2).
Northern Kentucky 73, UIC 58. NKU (12-3, 2-0) asserted itself as a Horizon favorite by knocking off the initial teams, IUPUI and UIC, this weekend. This was an impressive win today. The Norse seemed in charge even when they were behind early. And when a little UIC rally cut the 16 point lead to 8 with just under 6 minutes to play, the Norse clamped down on defense, giving up just 1 point the rest of the way. Jalen Tate had 25 points on 8-11 shooting, and Drew McDonald had 19 points and 20 rebounds--the first NKU player to hit that latter mark in 46 years. Despite being dominated today, UIC (7-8, 1-1) can't be too unhappy with a weekend road split against the conference favorites.
Wright State 72, IUPUI 64. Wright State opened a double digit lead, held off a late Jaguar rally, and closed it out as Cole Gentry hit 8 straight free throws in the final 72 seconds. Gentry finished with 20, including 10-10 from the line, and Billy Wampler had 22 for the Raiders (7-8, 1-1). Camron Justice led IUPUI (8-7, 0-2) with 17, but was 0-7 from 3.
Titan Non-Conference Opponents Western Michigan 73, Cal-Riverside 64. Mike Flowers had 24 for WMU (6-7), which had lost 5 of 6.
Ohio U. 68, Florida International 66. Ohio turned it over 23 times and blew a 12 point second half lead, but claimed the win when Jason Carter made a putback with 2.6 seconds left. Carter finished with 19 points and 9 rebounds to lead the Bobcats (8-4). FIU is 9-4. Bowling Green 94, Tennessee-Martin 80. That Titan win over Bowling Green keeps looking better. The Falcons won their 4th straight to finish non-conference play at 8-5. Demajeo Wiggins had 20 points and 13 rebounds, and is averaging 15 and 12 on the season.
Akron 82, Carnegie Mellon 55. Akron is 8-5 heading into MAC play.
Other Games that Caught My Eye #2 Michigan 74, Binghamton 52. Binghamton (4-10) gave Michigan (13-0) a tussle, hanging within three until the final 11 minutes, when Michigan launched a 19-4 run to end hopes for a big upset.
Central Michigan 123, Indiana-South Bend 76. Central snarfed up the non-D1 win to finish its non-conference season at 11-2.
Miami (Oh) 70, Evansville 67. Clemson 84, Lipscomb 67. Lipscomb entered the game at 9-3, with a win at Texas Christian and a 4 point loss at Louisville, so they were a real threat to the Tigers (10-3).
Northwestern 75, Columbia 54. I'm sure there was some excellent reporting on this game.
Holy Cross 78, Iona 71. Iona's string of 9 straight 20-win seasons is in big jeopardy. The Gaels are 2-9. Holy Cross (9-4) is looking for its first winning season in 5 years.

Why we love college basketball.
From Jon Rothstein on Twitter:
"Monmouth picks up its first win of season with a two-point triumph over Penn, who had previously beaten Villanova, Miami, & New Mexico. The only thing for sure in college hoops? Nothing's for sure."

December 31
Non-Conference Titan Opponents Kent State 71, Oberlin 48. Kent State (11-2) eats a cupcake.
Some Games #4 Virginia 100, Marshall 64. A moral victory for Marshall (7-6), which joins Maryland as the only teams to reach 60 points against Virginia (12-0) this year.
Creighton 79, Providence 68. NJIT 78, Duquesne 67. Monmouth 76, Penn 74 (OT). Penn was missing starting center Michael Wang, but still has no real excuse for losing at home to Monmouth (1-12), which entered as one of two winless teams in D1. There were 13 lead changes and 24 ties in this game. Michigan freshman Bryce Washington had 17 points for the Quakers (10-4).
Mid-Major Upset of the Day Hartford 79, Boston College 78 (OT). Hartford (7-8) beats BC (9-3) for the second time in three years.
Happy New Year! From all of us at the Packard Automotive Comany!

Also on New Year's Eve:
Pepperdine 100, Alabama A&M 64. Pepperdine, which won only six games all of last season, evened their record to 7-7 under Coach Lorenzo Romar, in his second stint as head coach of the Waves.
South Carolina 97, North Greenville 46. Shame on SEC member South Carolina for playing a Division 2 school. North Greenville isn't even a good D2 school; their record is now 1-10. This was the first win for South Carolina since November 30.
Creighton 79, Providence 68. Mild upset in the Big East opener for both teams as the Blue Jays win in the Dunkin Donuts Center.

And a little correction--in the December 30 scoreboard, I reported that Josh McFolley has caught Dick Dzik and Jon Goode on the Titans all-time scoring list. Not yet--I added his points from December 30 to his prior career total twice. Josh will enter Thursday's game with Wright State 1 point behind Dzik and 15 behind Goode.

A Few Games #9 Florida State 87, Winthrop 76. #10 Virginia Tech 81, Notre Dame 66. St. John's 89, #16 Marquette 69. Maybe this will finally get St. John's (13-1) some respect in the polls.

Wednesday, January 2
Titan Non-Conference Opponents Central Florida 78, Temple 73. UCF (11-2) held off a late Temple rally. Nate Pierre-Louis led Temple (10-3) with 21. It's been a long time since we Titan fans saw 7'6" Tacko Fall back in the 2015 preseason. Now a senior, he had 16 points and 11 rebounds for UCF.
Seton Hall 80, Xavier 70. Seton Hall (11-3) won its 7th straight, overcoming a 10 point second half deficit and then outscoring Xavier 12-2 down the stretch. Paul Scruggs had 22 and Zach Hankins 20 for Xavier (9-6).
Georgetown 84, Butler 76. There was no home cookin' for Butler (9-5) tonight. The host Dogs took 11 foul shots, to Georgetown's 32. Georgetown (11-3) only made 56% of those free throws, but that was more than the final margin.
Other Games of No Interest #8 Michigan State 81, Northwestern 55. You know, both Michigan and Michigan State (12-2) are good enough to reach the final four. 13 points and 12 assists for Cassius Winston tonight. Northwestern drops to 9-5.
#5 Kansas 70, #23 Oklahoma 63. Oklahoma (11-2) closed a 12 point gap with 5 minutes left to just 4, but Devon Dotson hit three free throws for Kansas (12-1) to stop the rally.
#11 Texas Tech 62, West Virginia 59. #15 North Carolina 77, Harvard 57. #19 Houston 74, Tulsa 56. Houston (14-0) is one of 4 unbeaten teams left. Tulsa is 10-4. Maryland 74, #24 Nebraska 72.
South Florida 76, Connecticut 68. Villanova 73, DePaul 68. Looks like another long Big East season for the Blue Demons. Texas 67, Kansas State 47. Lehigh 86, Lafayette 83. This is a big rivalry in eastern PA. Loyola 79, Indiana State 44. The Ramblers (8-6) raked the Sycamores (8-5) in the MVC opener for both teams. Loyola held Indiana State to 12 first half points in opening up a 34 point lead at the break.
Valparaiso 58, Illinois State 56. The MVC favorites--of which Illinois State was one--have struggled this year, and the teams with the best non-conference records, Indiana State and Drake, both lost tonight.

I like what I am seeing from the Spartans and the Wolverines this season. They could finish first and second in the conference, which would give me bragging rights over some of my Midwestern friends. One time Titan recruit AJ Turner is averaging 9 points per game for the Wildcats. One time Titan recruit Kenny Goins is averaging 9 rebounds per game for the Spartans. Kenny has had a great career considering he started as a walk on. He made himself into a Big Ten player.

While all our fun was going on, Oakland managed to knock off NKU by 2.
