The Furman Paladins of the Southern Conference (12-0) recently entered the top 25 for the 1st time ever - This makes me believe more and more that it can and will happen for us again some day... Oh Scout, I'm so wounded... I've noted several times in the daily scoreboard the Paladins' progress. Tuesday, December 4Other Games#25 Furman 98, Elon 77. Furman, making its first appearance as a ranked team since reaching #17 in the Coach's poll in December 1972, and first appearance in the AP poll ever, shot 57% to whip Elon. Furman is 9-0, with wins over Villanova and Loyola, and has the longest current win streak in the country. Are they really one of the 25 best teams? No. But that's a reminder that the polls aren't necessarily choosing the "best" teams, and they sometimes reward teams like Furman that are playing well and seem to have earned some recognition.

Lol - someday's I read the scoreboard more closely than others. I actually just wanted to type the word P-A-L-A-D-I-N Still the point remains, if they can do it, we can do it. And although I'm not at all familiar with the topic, I wondering if a Titan could defeat a Paladin (or would it even be possible they would fight)??

Tuesday, December 18 Another bad night for the Horizon.
Horizon League Georgia 81, Oakland 69. Georgia led coast to coast. OU closed to within 2 with just under 5 minutes remaining, but the Bulldogs (6-4) closed it out on a 15-5 run. Xavier Hill-Maas led Oakland (4-8) with 21 points and 9 rebounds. Westland's Mike Edwards, a one-time Titan recruiting target who chose to follow Yante Maten down to Georgia, did not play for the Bulldogs. After being a rotation player as a freshman and soph, he has pretty much disappeared over the last year and a half. Woulda been a real good player in the Horizon, I suspect.
#15 Ohio State 75, Youngstown State 56. Believe it or not, YSU led this one at halftime. In fact, the Penguins got out to a 14-2 lead to open the game, and it would have been but for the fact that the Guins shot just 33% in the half. Ohio State (10-1), which shot just 24% in the first half, rallied in the second behind Kaleb Wesson, who scored 26 points in the half, 31 for the game. Darrien Quisenberry led YSU (4-9) with 17. The Penguins next game will be their Horizon opener against Detroit.
Fort Wayne 87, IUPUI 77. IUPUI has been one of the better teams in the Horizon non-conference season, perhaps the only team to exceed expectations except for our Titans, and in our case, the bar was darn low. So this loss to a very so-so Fort Wayne team was disappointing and a bit embarrassing. Camron Justice had 25 and Grant Weatherford 20 for IUPUI (8-4). Fort Wayne (7-7) won behind 55% shooting from the floor and 30 points and 10 rebounds from my favorite non-Titan mid-major player, senior Jon Konchar. Konchar averages 18.5 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game, while shooting 57% overall and 36% from three. A complete player who virtually never has a bad night.
Wright State 78, Morehead State 67. The Raiders salvaged a little respect for the conference, evening their record at 6-6 with a home win over Morehead State (3-8). Loudon Love had 19 points and 10 rebounds.
Titan Non-Conference Opponents Missouri 71, Xavier 56. Missouri drubbed the Musketeers in Colombia, Mo. That should help make sure the X-Men (7-5) are fired up for the Titans on Friday night. Quentin Goodin had 21 points but the rest of the Musketeers shot 33% from the field.
Butler 76, Presbyterian 67. Presbyterian led at the half and didn't lose touch with Butler (8-3) until the final minutes. Erstwhile Titan Cory Hightower has been starting for the Blue Hose (6-6), and entered the game averaging 9.2 ppg and 6.1 rpg. Tonight he had 8 and 4 in the defeat.
Akron 82, Tennessee State 60. Easy win for Akron (7-4), thanks to making 13 of 29 three point shots.
Other Games #1 Kansas 89, South Dakota 53. No late heroics necessary in this one.
#2 Duke 101, Princeton 50. When was the last time Princeton gave up 100 points in a regulation game? And when was the last time Princeton lost by more than 50 points? Answers: December 31, 1968, and never. Worst defeat in Princeton history. And rather amazingly, Princeton actually scored the game's first 8 points and led for the first 14 minutes.
#8 Gonzaga 89, UT-Arlington 55. #20 Marquette 92, North Dakota 66. #23 Iowa 78, Western Carolina 60.
The Citadel 82, Campbell 76. Why do you care? Because Campbell's Chris Clemons is the only player in the country averaging more points than Antoine Davis. He had 21 tonight in the loss to The Citadel (9-2).
Vermont 83, St. Bonaventure 76 (2 OT). Did you realize that Vermont is working on a string of 10 straight 20 wins seasons (averaging 23.8 wins per year), and 15 in 17 years? The Catamounts are 9-3 after a double overtime win over the Bonnies (4-7). Anthony Lamb had 42 for Vermont. Murray State 66, Evansville 64. Trailing by 7, Murray State (8-1) held Evansville (5-6) without a field goal for the final four minutes and won on a Ja Morant layup at the buzzer.
Oklahoma 83, Creighton 70. North Texas 74, New Mexico 65. North Texas is 11-1. Santa Clara 102, USC 92 (2 OT). Normally a good candidate for mid-major win of the day. Santa Clara (6-6) led this was by 19 in the first half and by 15 with just six minutes left to play, but a furious Trojan rally left the Broncos having to tie it on a free throw with 2 seconds left to force the OT. In the first OT, Santa Clara trailed most the way, and tied it again on a bucket with 6 seconds left. They then drilled USC 13-3 in the second OT. USC is 5-6.
Mid-Major Win of the Day #14 Buffalo 71, Syracuse 59. Despite road wins at West Virginia, St. Bonaventure, and Southern Illinois, and a neutral court win over a 10-1 San Francisco team, you know people still doubt Buffalo. Not surprisingly, Syracuse, playing in the Carrier Dome, was favored over the 14th ranked Buffs. At least some doubts were laid to rest tonight as the Bulls (11-0) dismantled the Orange (7-4) in the second half. CJ Massinburg led the way with 25 points, and Ypsilanti's Nick Perkins had 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Also, Stephen F. Austin 59, Baylor 58. Shannon Bogues hit a three to bring SFA (6-4) to within a point with 38 seconds left, and after a Baylor miss drove the length of the court for the game winner just before the final buzzer. Bogues finished with 21 points.

Wednesday, December 19 Know what I love about college basketball? Look down below for the results of the Loyola (Calif.)/Boise State game. Every single night there are at least 2 or three of those around the country, games won on last second shots or blocks or steals. It's just a great sport.
Horizon Cleveland State 82, Niagara 60. Five Vikings scored in double figures, led by Tyree Appleby with 16, and CSU (5-8) pulled away in the second half in Cleveland. Niagara (5-5) has a couple Michigan kids in the starting lineup, senior Chris Barton and junior James Towns, and Towns led the Purple in scoring tonight with 18.
Non-Conference Titan Opponents Dayton 85, Western Michigan 72. Remember how the Flyers lit up the Titans with 68.5% field goal shooting? Well, they hit 60.4% against Western tonight, and added 17 of 19 from the foul line. I'm not saying we played decent defense against the Flyers, but they are a good shooting team. Josh Cunningham led Dayton (6-5) with 28. Western (5-6) got 20 points from Mike Flowers. Western's Seth Dugan, who lit up the Titans for 32 points and 22 rebounds, averaged 19 points and 10.5 rebounds through Western's first 8 games, but just 6 points and 5 rebounds in the last three.
Cal-Irvine 52, Eastern Michigan 48. Irvine totally shut down Eastern's star center, James Thompson, holding him to just 2 field goal attempts in 33 minutes. Irvine (11-2) is a pretty good team, but EMU (5-6) seems more disappointing with every season. I wonder if Coach Murphy is on the hot seat yet.
Toledo 86, Cornell 70. Jaelan Sanford had 29 points as the 11-1 Rockets rocketed to a 9th consecutive win.
Other Games Central Michigan 81, UMKC 72. Central is 9-2.
#3 Tennessee 83, Samford 70. Samford (10-3) hasn't beaten anyone of note, but the three teams they've lost to--Tennessee, Ohio State, and Belmont--are a combined 28-3.
#5 Virginia 69, South Carolina 52. North Carolina State 78, #7 Auburn 71. NC State's only loss is to Wisconsin. #11 Florida State 95, North Florida 81 #13 Virginia Tech 82, North Carolina A&T 60. #17 Mississippi State 98, Wofford 87. #22 Indiana 86, Central State 53.
Penn State 73, Duquesne 67. Duquesne coach Keith Dambrot has the opposite scheduling philosophy of Mike Davis. The Dukes (8-3) are picking up a lot of wins against patsies, but any time they face a more serious foe, they've had trouble. Sophomore Eric Williams, the one who got away, had 21 points for Duquesne.
Cincinnati 93, UCLA 64. A home loss to Belmont, and now this shellacking? This is gettin' embarrassing for UCLA (7-4).
St. John's 86, St. Francis (NY) 52. Johnnies go to 11-0. DePaul 81, Incarnate Word 71. DePaul is 8-2 San Francisco 76, Northern Arizona 60. The Dons are 11-1. Loyola Marymount 70, Boise State 69. The Lions are 11-1. James Batemon won it with a layup with 1 second left. Belmont 80, Western Kentucky 74. The Bruins are 9-1.
Gardner-Webb 106, Brevard 29. The lopsided score caught my eye.

Thursday, December 20
Horizon Northern Kentucky 65, Northern Illinois 62. A tight game all the way. With 4 seconds left, Tyler Sharpe missed a chance to put it away when he missed a free throw. Up three, NKU fouled to prevent the three point shot, and it worked. Drew McDonald led the Norse (10-3) with 15 points and 12 rebounds. One-time Titan commit Lacy James (found medically ineligible due to a heart condition) is now a starter at Northern Illinois. James entered the game averaging 9.5 points and 7.2 rebounds. We could use him, though he had a bad night tonight, with 0 points and 3 boards.
Titan Non-Conference Opponents Purdue 95, Ohio 67. Carsen Edwards scored 30 for Purdue (7-5), which shot 57%. Ohio U (7-4) got 15 from Ben Vander Plas.
Other games #2 Duke 69, #11 Texas Tech 58. In Madison Square Garden, Duke held Tech (10-1) without a field goal for the final 6:20, and outscored Tech 16-3 to claim the win. A really good game in which Tech, behind Jarrett Culver's 25 points, led most of the way. Zion Williamson was the man for Duke (11-1) with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Tech's loss leaves 8 unbeaten teams in D1.
#21 Houston 60, Utah State 50. Houston rallied from a 10 point half time deficit to stay undefeated. The Cougars (11-0) held the Aggies (9-3) to 19 second half points.
Notre Dame 100, Jacksonvill 74. The Irish are 9-3. North Texas 77, Arkansas Pine Bluff 66. NTU is 11-1.

Friday, December 21
Horizon Xavier 69, Detroit 55. Nice game for King. I didn't think the refs were atrocious, but they sure didn't give us any close calls, and the fouls were pretty lopsided (2-1) in favor in Xavier. Wouldn't have mattered, I think. We really need McFolley to find his shot. Come to think of it, we need Antoine to hit a few more shots too, although in his case, teams are keying on him and he's just not getting good looks. We need some plays that shake him free, and McFolley heating up again would help with Antoine, too. Antoine is 36-119 (30.3%) since the Kent State game. He dropped to a tie for third in the nation in scoring average after tonight's 19 point game. Good effort all around. We're just short of talent, and the Fox announcers did a good job of pointing out that the Titans, because of their late assembly as a team, still have far fewer practices under the belts than other teams. I'm by no means predicting a league title, or even a first division finish at this point, but there's no one in the Horizon we can't beat.
#10 Michigan State 99, Oakland 69. State (10-2) put this one away early. Cassius Winston led all scorers with 26. Freshman Braden Norris had 18 for Oakland (4-9).
Morehead State 74, IUPUI 70. IUPUI (8-5) came back from an early 15 point deficit to lead for most of the second half, but they let it slip away in the final minutes--a common story for Horizon teams this year. Camron Justice had 20 points for IUPUI. Host Morehead State is 4-8.
UIC 76, St. Francis (Ill.) 56. This is not one of the Division 1 St. Francises. Tarkus Ferguson led UIC (6-7) with 15 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists.
Titan Non-conference Opponents Bowling Green 73, Western Carolina 52. Justin Turner had 21 for Bowling Green (7-5), which is a perfect 6-0 at home.
Butler 71, Cal-Irvine 54. Irvine's been pretty good this year, 11-2 entering the game, with their only losses to Toledo and Utah State, but Butler was all over the Anteaters from the opening tip, leading by 24 at the half. Paul Jorgenson led the Dawgs (9-3) with 17 points and 7 rebounds.
Kent State 66, Oregon State 63. Kent (9-2) got a tough road win when the Beavers (7-4) last second three point attempt clanged off the rim. Jaylin Walker had 26 points and 7 rebounds for the Golden Flashes.
UMass-Lowell 97, Loyola (Md) 79. Andrew Kostecka led Loyola with 23 against the Titans, and has led them in scoring in every game since. He had 23 in tonight's loss.
Other Games
#8 Gonzaga 101, Denver 40. The final score says it all.
#20 Marquette 103, #14 Buffalo 85. Marquette pulled away in the second half behind a shooting clinic from Markus Howard, who scored 40 points in the second half, including 25 straight for Marquette at one point. After scoring just 5 points in the first half on 1-7 shooting, Howard was 11-18 from the floor, 8-10 from three, and 10-10 from the foul line in the second half. The win was Marquette's 7th in a row and left them a perfect 9-0 at home and 10-2 overall. Buffalo--which really played pretty well--takes its first loss.
LSU 75, #24 Furman 57. I noted in an earlier scorecard that AP voters were recognizing Furman's unbeaten record and wins over Loyola and Villanova, but no one seriously thinks they're among the best 25 teams in the country. No embarrassment in losing at LSU (8-3), but a good reality check. Furman (12-1) could still be a dangerous team in March.
Northeastern 64, Saint Bonaventure 59. Providence 71, Texas 65. Oklahoma 76, Northwestern 69 (OT). Baylor 57, Oregon 47. Lipscomb 91, Vermont 66. A couple of good, "low majors." Lipscomb is 9-3, Vermont 9-4.
Austin Peay 88, Campbell 75. Campbell (5-6) lost, but Chris Clemons, the nation's leading scorer, had 30. The top two scorers in the nation after tonight are both Big South players, Clemons and Hampton's Jermaine Marrow.
La Salle 80, Alabama A&M 57. Something had to give as a pair of teams with 0-10 records faced off. Monmouth and Coppin State are other winless teams.
Mid-Major Win of the Day Troy 74, Alabama-Birmingham 73. Jordan Varnado hit a game winning jumper with 11 seconds left. Varnado finished with 32 points.
With the losses by Furman and Buffalo, 6 teams are left unbeaten, from 6 different conferences: Houston, Michigan, Nevada, St. John's, Kansas, and Virginia.

Saturday, December 22
Horizon The Horizon league non-conference schedule wrapped up with 3 games today:
Milwaukee 67, Western Michigan 66. The Horizon gets a rare win in a close game, and a rare upset win, as Milwaukee won in Kalamazoo. The Panthers trailed most of the game but scored the final 6 points, with Vance Johnson putting back a blocked shot for the winner with 1 second remaining. Darius Roy led Milwaukee with 18, while Mike Flowers had 13 for Western (5-7), which lost for the 5th time in 6 games. Milwaukee (5-8) enters Horizon play with some momentum, having won its last three.
Evansville 80, Green Bay 75. Green Bay (6-7) was in it until the final 10 seconds, but couldn't squeeze past Evansville and be just the third Horizon team with a winning non-conference record. Novi's Kamron Hankerson led Green Bay with 18 points.
#17 Mississippi State 67, Wright State 63. Wright State has been a disappointment this year, but give them credit today. They refused to fold, battling back repeatedly from double digit deficits to within a point or even a tie, but they couldn't get the final basket to get over the hump. Mississippi State (11-1) made 5 of 6 free throws in the final minute to keep the Raiders (6-7) at bay. Billy Wampler led Wright State with 19 points.
The league finished 57-72 overall, and 41-72 against D1 competition. The league ranks 19th among the 32 conferences in NET, and also under the old RPI formula. Only IUPUI (8-5) and Northern Kentucky (10-3) will enter conference play with winning records. The Titans have the worst overall record at 3-9.
Titan Non-Conference Opponents Eastern Michigan 91, Siena Heights 71. Kevin McAdoo (where have I heard that name) scored 18 and James Thompson had 17 points and 16 rebounds as Eastern squared its record at 6-6. But 4 of those wins are against NAIA competition.
Dayton 81, Presbyterian 69. Not as close as it looks: Dayton (7-5) led by 28 at halftime. Cory Hightower had 11 points and 8 rebounds for Presbyterian (6-7)
Temple 82, Drexel 64. Shiz Alston had 25 and Nate Pierre-Louis 22 for Temple (10-2).
#6 Nevada 68, Akron 62. Akron kept the pressure on theh Wolves, but Nevada (12-0) closes out a game as well as any team in the country. Caleb Martin drilled a three with 45 seconds left to put Akron on the ropes, and Nevada then hit 5 of 6 free throws in the final 30 seconds. Martin finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds. For Akron (7-5), Daniel Utomi had 14 and 10.
Some Other Games #4 Michigan 71, Air Force 50. The Wolverines (12-0) keep rolling. Central Michigan 81, Jackson State 72. Central is playing a creampuff schedule, but a 10-2 record still looks nice.
#18 Arizona State 80, #1 Kansas 76. It seems like Kansas always had trouble early, and won late. But tonight they led most of the game, and lost late, with ASU outscoring KU 13-2 down the stretch. Excellent game, hope you watched it.
#3 Tennessee 83, Wake Forest 64. #5 Virginia 72, William & Mary 40. Unbeaten Virginia is surrendering an average of 50.3 point per game. Six of it 11 opponents have failed to crack 50 points.
#7 Auburn 93, Murray State 88. Trailing by 9 with 55 seconds to go, Murray State closed the gap to 3 with 19 seconds left, but couldn't get closer. Ja Morant had 25 for Murray State (8-2), leading all scorers.
#19 Kentucky 80, #9 North Carolina 72. The blood doesn't get any bluer than this. Kentucky (9-2) closed out the first half with a 14-6 run for a 9 point halftime lead, and then held off every Carolina (8-3) rally in the second half. A good, interesting game of teams that should be big factors come March.
#11 Florida State 81, Saint Louis 59. The Seminoles (11-1) shot 55%. #15 Ohio State 80, UCLA 66. The Big 10 keeps rolling up big wins, while UCLA's season keeps going south. #16 Wisconsin 84, Grambling 53. #22 Indiana 94, Jacksonville 64.
#23 Iowa 110, Savannah State 64. Savannah State (3-11), the anti-Virginia, is giving up an average of 100.1 points per game. In the Tigers last 6 games, they've given up an average of 62.8 points in the first half alone.
#25 Nebraska 86, Cal State-Fullerton 62.
St. Joe's 45, Loyola 42. St. Joe's Lamarr Kimble threw up what was little more than a Hail Mary three pointer with one second left to play. Swish.
Boston College 65, DePaul 62. The Blue Demons (8-3) led this one from the first basket until the final 35 seconds. BC is 9-2. St. John's 104, Sacred Heart 82. St. John's goes to 12-0. Villanova 81, Connecticut 58. Seton Hall 78, Maryland 74. Missouri 79, Illinois 63. Missouri (8-3) pulled away late. VCU 70, Wichita State 54. Kansas State 69, Vanderbilt 58. San Francisco 74, Stanford 65. The Dons (12-1) haven't had a better start since Bill Cartwright led the 1977 team to a 26-0 start and #1 ranking. Drake 66, New Mexico State 63. Two mid-majors that are off to good starts. Drake is 9-2, New Mexico State 9-3.
Alabama A&M 67, Tulane 59. A&M (1-11) gets its first win. Is this the worst field ever for a tournament? The four teams in "Battle of the Boardwalk" in Atlantic City, and their records at the start of the weekend, were A&M (0-10), Tulane (4-6), La Salle (0-10), and Towson (3-7).
Hampton 89, Howard 82. Jermaine Marrow, the nation's #2 scorer, had 31 for Hampton (5-7). Campbell 70, Alabama State 69. 36 points for Chris Clemons of Campbell, the nation's leading scorer. Campbell (6-6) almost lost after being ahead by 16 with under 5 six minutes to play.
Mid Major Win of the Day Indiana State 72, Colorado 67. The PAC 12 has really struggled in the non-conference season, ranking 6th in both NET and RPI but far behind the other five "P6" conferences. Colorado entered this game with the best record (8-2) of PAC 12 teams, but never led against the Sycamores.

Watched the Wright State game on the SEC Network last evening. Loudon Love was a scratch due to an ankle injury sustained in the last 3 minutes of the Morehead State game. The announcers said he was about 75%. A very small crowd at MS State. Wright State's off the ball action was very successful against MS State's man defense. Hughes also played a good game for WSU.

Sunday, December 23 A light schedule as Christmas approaches.
Other Games #21 Houston 75, Coppin State 44. Down to just 5 unbeaten teams after Furman, Kansas, and Buffalo lost this weekend. Houston (12-0) is one of the undefeated.
Drake 110, San Diego 103 (2OT). Drake tied it at the end of regulation on a three pointer with 2 seconds left, then tied it in the OT with free throws with 4 seconds left. The Bulldogs (10-2) then scored 17 points in the second OT, including 7-7 from the line down the stretch. San Diego is 10-4, including wins over Colorado and Washington State.
TCU 82, Bucknell 65. TCU is 10-1. Indiana State 84, UNLV 79. New Mexico State 75, Washington State 72. Washington State (7-5) tied it on a three by freshman CJ Ellerbee with 7 seconds left; New Mexico State (10-3) won it on a three by senior Jo Jo Zamora with 1 second left. The two led their teams in scoring with 20 and 28 points, respectively. College basketball is a great game.

I had hoped that Coach Marvin Menzies would be able to bring UNLV back, but despite some strong recruiting classes, he isn't where he's like to be early in year three. Will be interesting to see how the Rebels do in conference play, but they have some bad losses in the non-con. And Larry Johnson and Stacey Augmon aren't walking through the door. Local note: The two leading scorers for the Rebels are Amauri Hardy of Detroit and Kris Clyburn from Romulus.
On the other hand, Jamie Dixon is having great success at TCU, both in recruiting and on the court.
Washington State's loss paired with Colorado's loss to Hawaii to make it two more losses to mid major teams for the PAC 12.

Quick scoreboard catch up.
December 25: Only four D1 games on Christmas, all part of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic in Hawaii.
TCU 83, Indiana State 69. TCU is looking good, and Larry Bird wasn't walking through that door for the Sycamores. The Horned Frogs look good this year. Best wins are on the road against SMU and on a neutral court against USC (96-61), but they have also blown out most of their mid major competition. Only loss is a curious one to Lipscomb. TCU has depth and experience at the guard spot, which should bode well for them as the season goes on. Note: TCU has two wins over Indiana State this season.
Hawaii 68, Rhode Island 60. Brock Steptau, a walk on for most of his career at Hawaii, is averaging 11 points per game this year off the bench for the Rainbow Warriors. Nice story.
Bucknell 97, UNLV 72. Surprising margin of victory for Bucknell. Amauri Hardy of Detroit had 12 for UNLV. Kris Clyburn of Romulus had six.
Colorado 68, Charlotte 63. The Buffs are 9-3, but with all of their losses are to mid majors and they have no impressive wins. Charlotte is 3-8. If you stretch hard, you can reach a Titan connection to this game. Charlotte's high scorer was guard Jon Davis with 25 points. Davis was being recruited by Coach Mac as a high school player. He originally committed to DePaul, and shortly thereafter, the Titans got a verbal commitment from JUCO guard Aaron Simpson. I was quite excited about Simpson as a Titan. However, Jon Davis de-committed from DePaul, reportedly for academic reasons, and to fill that late opening, the Blue Demons let it be known that they were interested in Simpson. Simpson, being a Chicago kid, de-committed from Detroit to play for his hometown team in the Big East. Simpson, probably too small for the Big East, averaged 5 points per game for last place DePaul in his Blue Demon career. I think he would have been effective in the HL. He was one of those "ones that got away" in the McCallum era, along with other commits/de-commits like Shaq McKissic, Correntae DeBerry, and Lorenzo Bonam.
There were no games on December 26.

Friday, December 28 Back to action after a Christmas break.
Horizon Detroit 78, Youngstown State 66. I'll take a conference road win any day, I don't care who the competition is. Most of my thoughts on the game are in the game thread. Not to take anything off today's victory, but the Penguins outrebounded us 41-31, and that was without Naz Bohannan, the #2 rebounder in the conference. Bohannan apparently has the flu or some other bug, and was scratched shortly before game time. Also missing was guard Devin Morgan, who was averaging 24 minutes per game. Academics, perhaps? Anyway, the Titans have a favorable early schedule in conference, and need to take advantage. Today they did, and I'm happy. Cleveland State will be tougher.
Oakland 89, Cleveland State 77. Oakland (5-9) led cover to cover in Cleveland, pulling away in the second half. Jaevin Cumberland had 27 points and Xavier Hill-Maas 21 for the Grizzled. Tyree Appleby led host CSU (5-9) with 21.
UIC 75, Wright State 72 (OT). Two of the pre-season favorites squared off, and UIC came away with a road win in overtime. The biggest lead for either team was an early 7 point lead for Wright State, which UIC eliminated with a 9-0 run ending midway through the first half. After that there were 9 lead changes and 5 ties in the last 29 minutes of regulation, the final tie coming when Tarkus Ferguson hit a jumper for UIC. The overtime saw three more lead changes and 4 ties before Travell Washington won it with a 3 at the buzzer. UIC was very fortunate, because 3 of their players were kicked out of the game for fighting, and another fouled out. With Dominique Mathews and Rob Howard injured, that left UIC with just 5 players to take the floor, and by the end of the OT, 3 of them had 4 fouls. Another OT and the Flames likely would have run out of players. Washington, a freshman from San Bernardino, California, made 4 of 6 three-point attempts to finish with 13 points, his first double figure game in college. Marcus Ottey led UIC (7-7) with 23 points, while Ferguson had 18 points and 10 rebounds. Cole Gentry led WSU (6-8) with 24.
Northern Kentucky 92, IUPUI 77. A 17-2 run late in the first half blew open a tight game and the Norse cruised to victory--preventing visiting teams from sweeping on the Horizon's opening night. A late IUPUI rally made the final score appear like a tighter game than it was. Drew McDonald led NKU with 24 points and 12 rebounds.
Titan Non-Conference Opponents Kent State 70, Albany 68. Kent State (10-2) had a surprisingly difficult time with the Great Danes (4-10), finally winning it on a pair of Jaylin Walker free throws with three seconds left. Walker, the senior from Inkster, finished with 26.
#20 North Carolina State 97, Loyola (Md.) 64. Andrew Kostenka had 27 for Loyola (4-9). Loyola and Western Michigan are the only non-conference Titan opponents with losing records.
Other Games #7 Gonzaga 95, North Alabama 51. #10 Virginia Tech 85, Maryland-Eastern Shore 40. #11 Texas Tech 71, UT-Rio Grande 46. #18 Marquette 84, Southern 41. A lot of ranked teams picking on scrubs in a final pre-conference warm-up.
Hofstra 91, Delaware 46. The Colonial also started conference play today. Hofstra (11-3) and Delaware (8-6 were two of the more successful teams in non-conference play, but Hofstra won easily tonight.
