A bit more on that game--the Jackrabbits had 90 points at halftime. Savannah State made three pointers on their first three possessions of the game, and still trailed 10-9. South Dakota State made 23 of 34 three point shots in the game. Their star, Mike Daum, had 37 points and 17 rebounds. Daum is now third in the nation--after Campbell's Chris Clemons and our Antoine--in scoring at 26.2 ppg. He averaged 23.9 last year and 25.1 as a sophomore. He's also 10th in the nation in rebounding at 10.8 per game. So the Jackrabbits scored at even a fast pace than they can reproduce..... Technically speaking, I guess you do have to score in order to reproduce...

Wednesday, December 12HorizonIUPUI 116, Indiana-Northwest 79. IUPUI (7-4) had fun, and Jaylen Minnett had the most fun, with 28 points. Titan Non-Conference OpponentsTemple 65, Massachusetts 63. Temple (8-2) used a 16-2 run early in the second half to wipe out a 13 point deficit, then held off UMass (6-5) down the stretch. Shiz Alston led the Owls with 31 points. Other Games#11 Texas Tech 79, Northwestern (La.) State 44. Chris Beard is a helluva coach, and Tech is 9-0. #24 Houston 82, LSU 76. Houston trailed by 10 at halftime, and then gave up 5 quick points to LSU to start the second half But a long, slow comeback kept the Cougars unbeaten. Louisville 72, Lipscomb 68. Lipscomb (7-3) almost pulled it off, rallying from 12 down in the second half to tie, and closing to within 2 points in the final minute. DePaul 104, Chicago State 70. Murray State 80, Southern Illinois 52. Ja Morant scored 23 points, dished off 13 assists, and pulled down five rebounds as Murray State (6-1) rolled the Salukis (7-4). Kelvin Sampson doing a real nice job with that Houston program. The Cougars are 9-0 with wins over power five programs Oklahoma State, LSU, and Oregon. Sampson starts three experienced guards, a junior and two seniors, which should pay dividends throughout the season.

Thursday, December 13 The quiet week continues.
Horizon Milwaukee 69, UMKC 66. In Kansas City, Milwaukee scored the game's final 12 points to eek out a victory. The Panthers, who had trailed the Kangaroos (3-8) for the entire half, began the rally with 2:30 left to play. Vance Johnson started things off with an old-fashioned three point play and an assist on the Panthers' next possession, then Darius Roy hit a couple free throws and a what proved to be a game winning layup. Amir Allen wrapped up the comeback with a thunderous dunk in the final seconds. DeAndre Abram made 5 of 6 threes to finish with 20 points and keep the Panthers in the game for the final rally. This is the type of win that can sometimes turn a season around--we'll see if that happens for the Panthers (3-8).
Wright State 91,Northwestern Ohio 52. Reeling from 5 losses in 6 games, the Horizon League preseason favorites got a chance to regroup against NAIA member Northwestern Ohio. But the Raiders (5-6) still haven't beaten a D1 team in a month, and it took 'em a while to get going in this one. They didn't take the lead until the final 3 minutes of the first half, but a 28-4 run that straddled the half blew it open. Freshman Skyelar Potter had 17 points and 7 rebounds.
Other Games #16 Wisconsin 101, Savannah State 60. Savannah State, still shell-shocked after surrendering 90 first half points to South Dakota State on Tuesday, was down double digits before the first TV time out. But in the end, they gave up "just" 69 points in the first half tonight. Savannah (3-9) is giving up an average of 100 points per game. Wisconsin is 9-2.
Campbell 100, Central Pennsylvania 53. Campbell's Chris Clemons, the only player in the country averaging more points per game than our Antoine Davis, had 28 tonight.

Campbell's Chris Clemons, the only player in the country averaging more points per game than our Antoine Davis, had 28 tonight. Also tonight: Duquesne 72, Maryland Eastern Shore 57. Duquesne's Michigan influence was on display as Eric Williams (Port Huron), Brandon Wade (Ann Arbor), and Lamar Norman Jr. (Grand Rapids) all saw action for the Dukes. Norman had 16 points and 9 rebounds. Wade had two points, two rebounds, and an assist in 13 minutes. Williams only played four minutes coming off the bench. Not sure what the reason was for the limited minutes. San Francisco 85, Eastern Washington 63. The Dons move to 9-1.

Friday, December 14Only 4 all D1 matchups tonight, but two involved Horizon teams. HorizonDePaul 90, UIC 70. UIC fell behind 13-2 in the opening 4 minutes, closed the gap to 4, and then watched DePaul go on a 23-4 run. UIC never made a run after that. Max Strus had 34 points for DePaul (7-2). Tarkus Ferguson had 20 for UIC (4-7). Creighton 86, Green Bay 65. The Bluejays (7-3) pulled away with a 14-2 run ending with 7 minutes to go the second half, giving them a 16 point lead. Sandy Cohen had 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Phoenix (6-5). Eight of the 10 Horizon teams have losing records against D1 competition, the exceptions being Northern Kentucky (6-3) and IUPUI (5-3). AlsoGeorge Washington 70, Howard 64. Did you know that Howard is named for Major General O.O. Howard, a Union commander in the Civil War? Howard was the commander of the Union 11th Corps, which was routed at Chancellorsville and then again 6 weeks later on the first day at Gettysburg, earning him the nickname "Uh-Oh" Howard. But Howard was also a Medal of Honor recipient (as you can see below, he suffered some pretty serious war wounds) and, after Gettysburg, went on to a long and distinguished career. Major General O.O. Thanks for the historical detail, Commissioner. I did not know that about Howard.
Been a tough non-conference season for the HL. Hopefully the Titans can start reversing that trend tomorrow.

I suppose it's obvious, but Howard was a founder of the University, and served as its president from 1869-1874.

Saturday, December 15 Things pick up again after a slow week during which most schools took time off for finals.
Horizon Ohio 63, Detroit 61. I'll let others comment on the game. The Titans close out MAC play at 2-5, and begin Horizon play in two weeks.
IUPUI 82, Western Illinois 68. IUPUI (8-3) pulled away in the second half. Camron Justice had 20 and Elijah Goss had 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Youngstown State 58, Binghamton 48. A most un-Youngstown State-like score. Darrien Quisenberry led the Penguins (4-8) with 14 points.
Titan Non-Conference Opponents #5 Michigan 70, Western Michigan 62. Western probably played its best game of the year so far, but to no avail. UM scored the last 10 points of the first half to take a two point lead into the locker room, then outscored the Broncos 14-4 to start the second half. WMU refused to fold, however, and several times cut the Wolverine margin to 5. But they couldn't get past that hump. Mike Flowers had 31 for WMU (5-5). Charlie Mathews had 25 points and 10 boards for UM (11-0).
#25 Indiana 71, Butler 68. Indiana has won its last 4 games by a total of 8 points, this one on a Rob Phinnisee trey at the buzzer. Juwan Morgan led the Hoosiers (9-2) with 35 points. Sean McDermott had 22 for Butler (7-3).
Xavier 95, Eastern Kentucky 77. Xavier (7-4) will be the Titans' final non-conference opponent this Friday. Six players scored in double figures tonight for the Muskateers.
Temple 77, Davidson 75 (OT). Temple (8-2) scored the final 8 points in overtime to win. With 4 seconds left, Quinton Rose stole an in-bounds pass and dunked the ball for win. Shizz Alston led the Owls with 24 points and 11 assists. Davidson is also 8-2.
Toledo 84, MIddle Tennessee State 62. Toledo (10-1) rolled to its 8th straight win. Middle Tennessee, which has averaged 26 wins a season over the last 6 years, drops to 3-8.
Marshall 75, Akron 74. Akron (6-4) missed 4 shots for the win in the final minute.
Louisville 83, Kent State 70. Louisville (8-3) snapped Kent State's 6 game win streak. Jaylin Walker had 28 for Kent (8-2).
Other Games #1 Kansas 74, #17 Villanova 71. Dedric Lawson and Lagerald Vick combined for 57 of Kansas's 74 points, plus 19 rebounds, and the Jayhawks did what the Jayhawks (9-0) always do, pulled it out late. Phil Booth had 29 for Villanova (8-4).
#3 Tennessee 102, Memphis 92. Admiral Schofield had 29 points and 11 rebounds. Memphis made one run to cut the lead to 7 early in the second half, but they trailed by double digits for the substantial majority of the game.
#12 North Carolina 103, #4 Gonzaga 90. North Carolina (8-2) made 13 of 25 threes and outscored the Gonzaga 27-0 on second chance points. Cameron Johnson led the charge with 25 points, including 6-8 from three, and Luke Maye added 20 points and 16 rebounds. It was the second loss in a row for Gonzaga (9-2).
#7 Nevada 72, South Dakota State 68. The Jackrabbits, entering the game at 9-3 and fresh off a 139 point effort in their last game, jumped out to a 7 point halftime lead but couldn't hold it. Nevada (11-0) held the nation's #3 scorer entering the game, Mike Daum, to just 5 points. #8 Auburn 75, UAB 71 (OT). Jared Harper scored 23 of Auburn's final 30 points, finishing with 31. He overshadowed some heroics by Jeremiah Bell (a second-team all-Horizon player last year with Milwaukee), who hit a pair of threes in the final 40 seconds to force the OT.
#11 Texas Tech 82, Abilene Christian 48. Tech is 10-0. #13 Virginia Tech 73, Washington 61. #14 Buffalo 73, Southern Illinois 65. How high can Buffalo (10-0) go? Ypsilanti product Nick Perkins led them with 20 and 11.
#15 Ohio State 73, Bucknell 71. Bucknell pushed a 1 point halftime to lead to 8, fell behind by 11, and rallied only to fall short when Bruce Moore's three missed at the buzzer.
#18 Mississippi State 70, Cincinnati 59. A nice win for Mississippi State (9-1) over Cincy (9-2). #19 Kentucky 88, Utah 61. #20 Arizona State 76, Georgia 74. The Sun Devils (8-1) rallied from 18 down. #22 Iowa 77, Northern Iowa 54. #23 Furman 93, UNC-Wilmington 50.
Old Dominion 68, #25 Syracuse 62. ODU's BJ Stith entered averaging exactly 18 points per game. After a scoreless first half, he scored 18 in the second and ODU (8-3) came from 13 down to win its 6th straight.
#25 Kansas State 71, Georgia State 59.
Notre Dame 88, Purdue 80. The Irish (7-3) could never quite shake the Boilermakers, but led virtually the whole game. Purdue is probably the best 6-5 team in the country.
North Carolina State 89, Penn State 78. NC State is 9-1 after the road win. UNLV 92, BYU 90 (OT). Cal 67, Cal-Poly 66. We so could have won that game.
Charleston 83, VCU 79. Grant Riller had 30 points and Jerrell Brantley 26 points and 17 rebounds as Charleston (9-2) upset VCU (7-4) on the road.
Mount Saint Mary's 74, Wilson 59. The Mountaineers win over D3 Wilson leaves La Salle, Monmouth, Coppin State, and Alabama A&M as the only winless teams in D1.
Mid-Major Win of the Day Belmont 74, UCLA 72. Kevin McLain hit the game winner with 2 seconds left as the Bruins (8-1) upset the Bruins (7-3) in Pauley Pavillion. McLain finished with 20 points.

Note on that UNLV win: Kris Clyburn (Romulus) and Amauri Hardy (Detroit) each scored 21 points for the Runnin' Rebels.
Few other results of interest from Saturday, December 15:
Texas 98, Grand Canyon 60. Grand Canyon and Dan Marjerle get a lot of love from the media, but a hard look shows that the in his five years at GCU the team hasn't reached the NIT or NCAA. I saw a guy describe them online as "one of the top mid major programs in the nation". Might want to pump the brakes on that a bit, and focus on some other mid majors that have actually been to the tournament a few times in that span. (Texas Southern?) There was a great moment in this game, the kind that makes me love college basketball. A Texas walk on got into the game and hit a three pointer with 36 seconds to go. The crowd erupted and the Texas bench went crazy.
Seton Hall 72, Rutgers 66. Still trying to figure out how good Seton Hall is this year.
Oral Roberts 59, Richmond 52. Nice road win for our former MCC conference mate.
Wichita State 63, Southern Miss 60. This is supposed to be a down year for Wichita State, and perhaps a critical year as they are in year two in the AAC, facing tougher competition than they did in the MVC.

His grades were so bad he didn't even take official visits. He went to a JUCO in Texas before UNLV. Hardy originally committed to Oklahoma State before their coach was fired, and then he re-opened his recruitment and signed with UNLV. He wasn't a serious Titan target at any time.

Sunday, December 16 The HL continued to struggle, mainly because its teams keep losing very winnable games. Cleveland State had Illinois State on the ropes tonight, and Oakland was positioned to beat Hartford, but neither could deliver in the final moments.
Horizon #9 Michigan State 104, Green Bay 83. One of those games that looks lopsided in the final score, but was really more lopsided than that. State led by 29 at halftime, after dropping 64 points on the Phoenix. Actually, Green Bay was competitive for a while. They led 24-20 with 13 minutes left in the first half, but then the Spartans (9-2) went on a 27-4 run. Green Bay responded with 7 straight to cut the Spartan lead back to 12, but a 17-0 MSU run to close the first half made it absolutely clear who was boss. Green Bay got to within 19 points for a few seconds late in the second half, while the Spartans were playing their walk-ons and, if I'm not mistaken, a couple fans drawn randomly from the stands. Nick Ward led all scorers with 28, while Sandy Cohen led Green Bay (6-6) with 22.
Hartford 87, Oakland 82. OU (4-7) had an early 8 point lead, but Hartford (5-7) came back to lead by 1 at the break and never trailed in the second half. Jaevin Cumberland led Oakland with 26 points. High scoring Xavier Hill-Maas was held to just 7.
Northern Kentucky 72, Miami (Oh) 66. NKU (9-3) went 6-6 from the stripe in the final minute to close it out. Drew McDonald hit 4 of those free throws, and led all scorers with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
Illinois State 88, Cleveland State 77 (OT). Illinois State went on a 10-0 run starting with just over 4 minutes left to play, erasing a 7 point deficit. CSU played well though, and retook the lead on a couple of Tyree Appleby free throws with 3 seconds left. But the Vikings were caught with their pants down on the in-bounds, and Illinois State got a full court pass to a wide open Phil Fayne. Kasheem Thomas fouled him hard to prevent the basket, but Fayne, just a 68% free throw shooter, knocked 'em down with 1 second left to force the OT, which was all Illinois State. Freshman Rashad Williams had a big night for CSU (4-8), with 25 points. Fayne led ISU (7-5) with 30.
Milwaukee 87, Wisconsin Lutheran 64. DeAndre Abram led the rout of outmanned Lutheran with 25 points and 11 rebounds. The Panthers are (4-8).
Titan Non-Conference Opponents Tulsa 72, Dayton 67. Curran Scott made 4 free throws in the final 11 seconds as Tulsa (9-3) held off a late Dayton rally. Josh Cunningham led Dayton (5-5) with 15.
Bowling Green 82, Findlay 57. BGSU (6-5) picked up the non-D1 win behind Justin Turner's 22 points.
Other Games #24 Houston 68, St. Louis 64. Houston doesn't have Antoine Davis, but they've got Corey Davis, who had 17 points, including a game winning three pointer in the final 30 seconds. The Cougars are 10-0, their best start since the 1968 Final Four edition led by Elvin Hayes.
St. John's 73, Wagner 58. St. John's (10-0) is one of 9 remaining unbeaten teams, and the only one not ranked. Rhode Island 83, West Virginia 70. Fatts Russell led Rhody (5-3) with 18 points. You don't see many nicknames like "Fatts" anymore. Duquesne 72, Maine 46. The Dukes are 8-2.

Monday, December 17
Horizon UIC 63, Incarnate Word 57. UIC (5-7) built a 15 point halftime lead and kept the Cardinals at bay after the break without ever really breaking it open. Michael Diggins led the Flames with 15 points.
Other Games #10 Florida State 85, SE Missouri State 68. Vanderbilt 81, #20 Arizona State 65. Vanderbilt is 7-2 after a surprisingly easy win. Like most of you, I'm hope that Tennessee's Admiral Schofield will transfer across the state to play for the Commodores. Native Detroit son and onetime Cleveland Stater Rob Edwards led Arizona with 14.
Ball State 77, Valparaiso 61. It's petty, but I like seeing Valpo (6-5) lose these days. Wake Forest 67, Davidson 63.
Mid-Major Win of the Day Gardner-Webb 79, Georgia Tech 69. Gardner-Webb (8-5) won its 6th in a row.

The Furman Paladins of the Southern Conference (12-0) recently entered the top 25 for the 1st time ever - This makes me believe more and more that it can and will happen for us again some day...
