Thirteen on roster, but four reportedly are not on scholarship. That means if the are no additional players joining the team this season, we have four scholarship slots unused. I remember in the interview after the season-ending loss to NKU, Coach D’s first remarks on the post-game interview were that we need to get bigger fast, so lack of size in today’s roster announcement is a bit disappointing. Antoine Davis’ weight listed as 160 on the roster, I know there was talk of bulking him up during the offseason. Does anyone know what happened to the international big men Coach D spoke about just a couple weeks ago? Were they kidnapped? At the risk of sounding foolish, is there anything anyone’s heard suggesting one or both might still enroll for the winter semester? I doubt they'd hold back 4 scholarships. I see two more recruits coming, 1 being used by Curry (in good faith by Davis assuming Curry was injured--I don't mean to say Curry will be on the team), and one held open.

I spoke to Robert Vowels at homecoming. He said the two big men are expected to be here by second semester. There are still some hurdles to clear, such as NCAA clearance to play.

The roster reveal didn't give us any new news as it were. All of the communal sleuthing by both boards had identified the incoming class.
Thus, the news yesterday kinda lands with a minor thud. We were all probably anxious for a bigger, shinier class. We were hoping for the mystery big man (or two) to bulk up our presence in the paint. None of us saw the news about Curry coming, which I'm disappointed in as he showed some real promise and athleticism last year.
The 'pocketed' scholarships...I suppose let's hope the word from AD Vowels is right that we will hopefully get 1 or both of the int'l guys eligible soon enough. Perhaps Coach also likes having 1 or 2 just in case a mid-season transfer becomes available.
So finally now we can turn our attention to 6 weeks of guessing at playing time by minutes by each player.
PS - Shout out to Scout. I like Scout, you like Scout, we all like Scout. He's a good fan and a knowledgable hoops guy. He wore his emotions on his sleeve on here for us all to see in terms of his frustration of things.
PPS - Commish's line about just being the guy that puts out the peanuts...that needs to be at the top of this website somehow/somewhere, I got a good laugh at that one!!

College basketball media guy Jon Rothstein has been in Michigan the past couple of days, visiting practices and sharing his observations on Twitter. Was at Oakland and U of M yesterday. Is at Michigan State this morning. Hope he makes it to Calihan while he's in the state.

Apart of me hopes he skips us. I would rather see a team play with a chip on there shoulders than one that feels they are entitled.

I dont think Curry would count against our 13 scholarships, he would be given a "medical retirement", the school would still pay his tuition and room and board and we would still have our full allotment of 13 scholarships.

That's a bad blow, both for him personally and for the team. I was anticipating a pretty good year from him in 2019-20. With Miller joining Curry I felt pretty good about our front line even without the MBM. Seems quite thin now. Need Boe to step it up or Willie to develop an inside game--which may not be the best use of Willie's talent. Two guys I was counting on, Hamrick and Curry, now out of the picture. Ugh. I'd feel a lot better about the season if they were on the roster.

Until the MBMs arrive mid season, Boe may have to start at center. We could easily start the season with Miller under the basket offensively and let Willy roam the 3 point circle. But defensively, is where I'm concerned. With both guys on the court, especially if we play zone, will both men be quick enough to cover the rotations? Miller doesn't look to be in the best shape & Willy was no speed demon last year. The young legs of Boe and Brandon and Moore might be a necessity. Hopefully the 1st two have developed an offensive game.

Hopefully the 1st two have developed an offensive game. Willy is down 5 lbs from last season and hopefully over the injuries that nagged him last season. I hear that over the summer, he took 25-30,000 shots per week in order to improve his release and quickness. Only Antoine averaged more shots per week than Willy. In retrospect, Curry's knee may have started to weaken in the HL season. He played fewer minutes each game and frequently got outjumped and beaten to spots. I don't think it was lack of effort. Likely his knee not permitting him to keep up. He gave it all he had. Moore started to come on in the last 10 games of last season. A full season of 12 points and 7 rebounds per game would help a lot. On paper, Maxwell should be as good as McFolley and Hamrick. He'll have less steals, but should also have less turnovers. He'll also give us 4 more inches of length on defense than Josh. Brandon and Boe also worked hard on their offense and shooting over the summer. I hear they took about 15,000 shots per week as they worked to improve their offense. Recall that we played NKU pretty well in the quarterfinal game at BB&T with only Willy and Cole Long playing post. Blackshear, Brandon and Curry did not play at all in that game. I'm not saying that everything is great without Curry and Hamrick and without being able to get the 1 or 2 MBM enrolled by the 18th. Until we have a chance to see these guys play, we won't really know. At the very least, we'll have a tough small ball unit by the time the HL season arrives. If Boe and/or Chris make a step forward this season, we could be surprisingly better than many fear now. And if we get the MBM for the Northeastern game, then we'll be a much different team for the HL season than we were for the first 6 weeks of the season.

In a time when so much information goes through social media, I don't get why anyone would prefer that Jon Rothstein not talk about their program. Everyone involved in college basketball knows him and hundreds of thousands read him. Including recruits. Oakland, UM, and MSU were all glad he stopped by. A program can benefit from free publicity, and that won't hurt their chances of winning games during the season.

Not that it means anything, but interesting that Miller is listed at 6'6" 268# on the roster and press release. Hofman at 6'5" 260#(Roster) and 6'5" 275# (!!)(press release), so stamina could be an issue with these 2 guys. LeGrand is 6'7" and as a forward (not a guard as was previously reported) so that should help inside

You may be stretching it saying Maxwell should be as good as McFolley and Hamrick. McFolley was as very good 4 year player and #2 option on last years team and an excellent defensive player. If he equals McFolley, that would be a huge and probably unexpected (by most) boost for this years team

I don't think I can say how foolish I think this approach is. I like the old fashioned way of getting from one place to another by walking. I'm not giving up my car. I like the old fashioned way of communicating face to face. I'm not dropping my phone and email service. I like the old fashioned way of seeing movies at the theater. I'm not refusing to watch cable, let alone Netflicks or Hulu. I like the old fashioned way of winning games in the paint. I'm not in favor of telling Antoine "don't shoot any threes." Izzo and Roy Williams and Calipari etc etc do not, to my knowledge, discourage media coverage of their teams because they'd rather gain PR just by winning games. We all want to win games. I cannot fathom any reason you wouldn't want a guy like Rothstein tweeting positive things about your team, and to say that you'd rather gain PR simply by relying on wins strikes me as an absurdist response that is totally off-point to the question raised.
