Here's one: Carlos "Scooby" Johnson has entered the transfer portal. He was most recently with Butler, but was kicked off the team back in 2021 when he was charged with rape and sexual battery. The case moved it's way through the system, and a couple of weeks ago Johnson was found not guilty of the sexual battery charges; the rape charges had been dismissed before the trial. In high school, the Benton Harbor native was ranked a top 150 four star recruit; a 6-6, 210 power forward. He never played at Butler; missed his freshman year with a knee injury and then came the criminal charges. Are you interested in this one? Michigan kid, sought after recruit three years ago. Cleared of criminal accusations. Out of organized basketball for what feels like eternity. Might be some health questions. Would certainly create some buzz, some of it the wrong kind. I think it's worth having a conversation with him and seeing where his head is at. Then you can go from there. www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/36180327/ex-butler-player-carlos-scooby-johnson-found-not-guilty

Benton Harbor has a lot of really good rec. centers for league and pick up. Pretty good chance he has been playing and not sitting. I hope we offer and take a chance on him. We would be better with him instead of against him and I think we did offer when he was in HS.

Anyone interested in a 6-11/285 pound center who averaged 5 points and 5 rebounds per game last season in 18 minutes per game for a Big 12 team? I am. One just entered the portal.
The player is Jimmy Bell, Jr., who has been mentioned on this board several times over the past few years. I saw him play in person against Tulane back in December 2019 in Phoenix. Huge guy, played basketball and football in high school.
The good: He's got size and experience. He played in 34 games for West Virginia in 2022-23, with highs of 18 points and 12 rebounds. Also scored 15 points twice (against TCU and Auburn). He's from Saginaw and attended Arthur Hill High School before went West to Bella Vista Prep.
The bad: This is his second time in the portal and he needs a waiver. He spent two years at St. Louis before going the JUCO route, then returned to D1 last season with West Virginia. He also might intend to stay in a high major environment, and given his size, that option will likely be out there for him.
Anyway, just another name to consider. I'd welcome him if the staff wants him and the interest is mutual.

His next year will be his fourth in D1 ball, but he has the extra Covid year. These days, everyone in basketball is basically a one year guy with any additional years to be determined.

These days, everyone in basketball is basically a one year guy with any additional years to be determined. So the JUCO year doesn't take one of the five? It used to be that you could do a year or two in JUCO but it decreased your overall count. You couldn't do two JUCO years and still have four years of eligibility left.

The JUCO year does count as using a year of eligibility.

The JUCO year does count as using a year of eligibility. Thanks, Larry. So I guess Bell would have one year of eligibility left.

Never mind. The big schools are after Jimmy. More importantly, it looks like he is after they.

This tweet has a chart of all known Michigan players in the transfer portal and their status. Interesting that the substantial majority still seem to be dropping down a level in competition.
