Good call. He committed to the Titans today.

Never mind. The big schools are after Jimmy. More importantly, it looks like he is after they. Bell to Mississippi State.

This is probably a stretch, but I saw Tanner Holden was back in the portal. You might remember Holden from his three years at Wright State, where he averaged 20 ppg as a junior in 2021-22. He used that season as a means to transfer to Ohio State, which seemed like a good choice at the time. He started off his season with a 12 point performance against familiar foe Robert Morris, and in December he had the high point of his season, hitting a buzzer beater as the then #25 Buckeyes beat Rutgers by one. The bottom dropped out of the season after that, though, for both Holden and OSU. He only hit double figures that one time, averaging 3.6 ppg in 13 minutes per game. And while in most recent seasons you can count on the Buckeyes to be in the tournament, 2022-23 was an atypical bad year, as the team finished 13th in the Big 14. Holden's got one season left thanks to his Covid year, and is probably looking to get back to the mid major level. He's a Ohio kid, born about five hours down I-75 from Detroit. Our staff is familiar with him. If he's interested, he'd probably be a nice contributor for us. On the other hand, he's probably getting a lot of mid major interest, so he's going to have options. www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/stats/_/id/4431990/tanner-holden

If he doesn’t choose Detroit, it would be justice if he finished at Wright State.

The two players who were the victims in that mess at New Mexico State are both looking for new homes. One is Shakiru Odunewu, a 6-10, 245 center who averaged 2.6 points and 2 rebounds in 7 minutes per game. Saw action in 19 contests, including a bunch of WAC games, and has two years of eligibility left. The other player is Deuce Benjamin, a red shirt this past season, which was his freshman year. He was the Gatorade New Mexico High School player of the year in both his junior and senior seasons. He reportedly also had offers from Little Rock and Florida International. Deuce is a 6-1 point guard. I'd say it's worth contacting them, if the Titans haven't done so already. www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/4896933/shakiru-odunewunmstatesports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/deuce-benjamin/8811

Thunder is out of coaching but still living in New Mexico, counseling troubled kids. I wonder if he would have a way to contact them and put in a good word for us.

OK, this is directly about football, not basketball, but it certainly has some relevance to the basketball situation.
You may have seen that Ohio State QB Kyle McCord has entered the transfer portal.
Now, let's think about this for a moment. Ohio State is one of, at most, 5 truly elite programs in college football, i.e. it is a serious contender every year to make the (4-team) playoff, to be ranked #1, to have a Heismann candidate. (The others? Alabama, Georgia, and I can't think of any). Its facilities for the athletes may be equaled but are probably unsurpassed, with the possible exception of Nike-funded Oregon. It's tradition is probably unsurpassed by any school with the possible exception of Notre Dame (which has been good but not elite for a long time), USC (ditto), and Alabama. It is THE team, pro, amateur, whatever sport, in both its metro area and its entire state, which is still a heavily populated state. It is hard to imagine that NIL opportunities are better anywhere else. He plays before 100,000 people every Saturday, and is an instantly recognizable name throughout the state. If he wants to get a Heismann, or prep for an NFL career, it's hard to imagine a better place to be than OSU (only Alabama, with 57, and Georgia, with 49, had more players on NFL rosters this year than OSU's 48).
I mean, I don't know Kyle McCord, so I don't know what motivates him. But he didn't mention family concerns, or anything else that would explain this decision. True, he's not from Ohio, he's from New Jersey. Maybe he's just got a hankerin' to fulfill a childhood dream and play at Rutgers, Temple, or Delaware.
If Ohio State can't keep Kyle McCord out of the portal, can any team ever feel it can hold its athletes? What does he think he'll find? What do these players want?
But I will add one caveat: Maybe I've got it backwards. While McCord won the starting position this year and got OSU to the brink of the playoff, many people think he's not the best that OSU can do. The word is already that they want to get Washington State QB Cameron Ward, who's in the portal. After all, McCord was only the 18th rated QB in the country. Maybe the flip side is that, with the transfer portal, no player can ever assume his position, either.
Either way, this all just strikes me as insane.

After the Michigan, OSU fans seem to blame him for the loss, he may be in a place at OSU where he can't come back. Maybe Temple is the right place for him. I think a Big 12 school like WV would be a better fit for him.

Here's one: Carlos "Scooby" Johnson has entered the transfer portal. He was most recently with Butler, but was kicked off the team back in 2021 when he was charged with rape and sexual battery. The case moved it's way through the system, and a couple of weeks ago Johnson was found not guilty of the sexual battery charges; the rape charges had been dismissed before the trial. In high school, the Benton Harbor native was ranked a top 150 four star recruit; a 6-6, 210 power forward. He never played at Butler; missed his freshman year with a knee injury and then came the criminal charges. Are you interested in this one? Michigan kid, sought after recruit three years ago. Cleared of criminal accusations. Out of organized basketball for what feels like eternity. Might be some health questions. Would certainly create some buzz, some of it the wrong kind. I think it's worth having a conversation with him and seeing where his head is at. Then you can go from there. www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/36180327/ex-butler-player-carlos-scooby-johnson-found-not-guilty Johnson is a really good player! Benton Harbor has a lot of really good rec. centers for league and pick up. Pretty good chance he has been playing and not sitting. I hope we offer and take a chance on him. We would be better with him instead of against him and I think we did offer when he was in HS. Scooby Johnson is playing this season at Henry Ford community college. Good move for him; gets back to playing organized ball, shows coaches what he can do, gets back to the school and basketball grind. He's averaging 8 points on 7 rebounds per game. Has struggled shooting the ball, hitting only 28% from the floor, which I guess is expected as he knocks off three years worth of rust. I'd still like the Titans to check him out. He's got size and was VERY good before his knee injury and legal problems. I would think he's worth a conversation and a visit.

Cam Ward is a large, more mobile upgrade. Ohio State should have lost more than 1 this year due specifically to McCord.

Talent-wise, he'd immediately be the best player on our team. Hope he's got a YouTube highlight video floating around out there. He's not from Texas, so he's already got one strike against him.

There's a court hearing today in West Virginia that could result in a temporary restraining order and/or an injunction against the NCAA preventing it from enforcing its current transfer waiver rules. Apparently, there are 7 or 8 States involved.
I wonder if we would activate Tchikou if that injunction is granted.
