Good luck Sam. Hope you catch on somewhere. I enjoyed watching you. I am wondering if you are in the States or if you can even get back to transfer.

I feel Sam never had the full opportunity to show us his full potential. He was forced inside a lot due to our lack of bigs and in order to get on the floor ended up playing some 4 when I think he was more suited as a 2 with a penetrating PG. He looked to be a good spot up shooter.

Hope that Sam moves on and does will for himself, but this was the right move by our coaching staff.

Hope that Sam moves on and does will for himself, but this was the right move by our coaching staff. Yeah, offering an 18 year old kid from across an ocean a scholarship and then cutting his ass loose after one year extremely late into the recruiting window for the next season during a global pandemic is an awesome move. Well done, coaches. AMDG.

Yeah, I don’t think there’s any doubt that Sam would have been better off if we’d never offered him a scholarship or given him a year of education. As insiders like Mole know, until this morning the coaching staff was leading him on, letting him know his minutes would vastly increase this season. His taking down all his Titan stuff from social media a month ago was a darn good head fake at the time, even if it didn’t work out due to the duplicity of the coaches.

I am quick to criticize a coach for running off players, but I doubt that Sam just found out his standing with the team. I expect they have had conversations with him and others.

Just an observation - with Hofman leaving, this upcoming season, we will have zero sophomores on the roster (Pink and Waterman should be considered freshman based on having 4 years of eligibility left)

Do we really know that Hofman was cut loose late in the recruiting window? That could be the case, or as others have commented, perhaps a decision not to renew his scholarship was communicated months ago. There is also the possibility that Hofman wasn’t 100% happy here, and he was the one who initiated the decision to part ways. The timing to enter the transfer portal could be related to course completion issues, i.e., he needed to take a spring semester class or finish up an incomplete before he could make the move. Absent credible information that Hofman got screwed over by the coaches, I’ll pass on criticizing the MBB staff at this time for this development.

I’ve no idea if the coaches asked Hofman to leave or if it was 100% his decision. I suppose the only people who know for sure are the coaches and Hofman itself. I just think the timing is super awkward, although, as noted above, perhaps Hofman cashed in on some additional summer UDM credits before officially announcing his departure.
Either way, we are seeing far too many young men pass through this program without obtaining degrees from Detroit Mercy. Whether we are recruiting poorly or developing/mentoring poorly might not be relevant. We need to do better by these kids and their families.

Whether we are recruiting poorly or developing/mentoring poorly might not be relevant. We need to do better by these kids and their families. That’s bullshit. You post all the time about things you know nothing about, always putting the worst possible spin on it. You have zero knowledge—zero—about why Hoffman is transferring. Criticizing the team’s play, criticizing recruiting, criticizing in-game decisions—that’s all fine. Those are things we can see and judge. The thing is, you sit out there and speculate on things you know nothing about as if you’re some F’in mind reader. We lost one player this year who had played any meaningful role in the team. Occam’s Razor tells us the others are probably leaving because they weren’t good enough to contribute at the Horizon League level. And they were all pretty much desperation recruits when they walked in. We all knew that. All of these kids got a chance. How has the team not done right by them? WTF do you know about “their families? I’ll tell you what you know about their families—jackshit. Criticism is one thing—but relentlessly imputing bad motive and bad faith, negatively speculating on stuff you don’t know, and always acting as if you’re the only one who really cares about people just gets real tiresome.

I'm getting a little nervous that no one has picked up Sam Hoffman yet. If he doesn't enroll in another NCAA institution doesn't that count against us?
