Press ReleaseDETROIT (11/23/2020) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team will not be traveling down to Kentucky to play in the Bluegrass Classic due to a positive COVID-19 test in the program. The positive test came about from a member of the support staff and that individual is not experiencing any symptoms and is now in quarantine. No other players or coaches have tested positive, although a few members of the team are in isolation due to contact tracing. Due to HIPAA, Detroit Mercy will not release the name of the support staff member and will continue to follow all regulations and protocols in place by the Horizon League and NCAA. "We believe the decision to cancel our games and not travel is best for everyone's health and safety," said Director of Athletics Robert C. Vowels, Jr. "We have had no positive tests with both our men's and women's basketball programs since we started our testing requirements in early October. Our student-athletes, coaches and staff have done a great job abiding by all the guidelines put forth, but with the rise in positive cases across the country, it unfortunately was able to get inside our program. At this point, we are hopeful that it is isolated to one individual and we will take the time this week to make sure everyone stays healthy and tests negative and hope to start our season next week." Detroit Mercy is looking to make up the scheduled games at a later date.

Traveling around the country and playing basketball games during a once in a century pandemic was not the worst idea I've ever heard. Pretty close, but not the worst.

The program is not shutdown and the person infected has no symptoms. No one else has tested positive or is showing any symptoms. Likely dead virus from months ago or a false positive. I would not be surprised if KY game was rescheduled.

We’d have better odds getting a 6th year of eligibility for Brundidge this year.

What do you mean by that UP? The school should fire someone?

For those who think some of these games won't be rescheduled.

The person is not sick and has no symptoms. The sample was likely taken late last week and the results disclosed yesterday. PCR tests look for RNA. The presence of RNA alone tells you nothing about the state of the virus. No one else in the program was sick as of yesterday. Without symptoms, this person could not even qualify for a vaccine or therapeutic trial. So, we canceled our trip even though nobody is sick. And you want to fire this person? Why is it always the fault of the person who gets the virus? Maybe masks don't work as well as advertised? Maybe it's a false positive like with Matthew Stafford? There exist many explanations for this positive test result other than "someone was not paying attention."

ptc is 100% correct. We canceled the entire trip because of one non player RNA test. It’s hard to imagine a lower bar. I can’t keep up with all the university, conference, local and state guidelines, but I don’t believe we were forced to cancel. We should have just disclosed it and let Kentucky decide.
Can someone explain to me the difference between football and basketball here? I’m not a huge college football fan but I know that in some conferences a player can test positive, he’s quarantined, and the team can still play. But it seems that right now in college basketball if one player on your team tests positive the entire team is on pause? It’s also weird that some basketball coaches have tested positive but the coach is staying home and the team still plays. If that’s so, why couldn’t we play tomorrow? Keeping all of this stuff straight is harder than keeping up with our ever changing roster.
With the increased travel, I just can’t see how any team stays 100% COVID free the next month. Most teams have 10-14 players. How do you prevent all of those players from catching this highly contagious virus when they are at airports, hotels, eating food prepared by other humans?

Was really looking forward to seeing the Titans in action this week. I'm starving for hoop. Seems like five years ago that I was screaming my head off in the stands after Alonde Grande hit that last second game winner against UIC. Also a bummer that Arizona State and Baylor was cancelled. That had the potential to be one of the best games of the non-con season.

Hopefully, with the delay, the NCAA will let Noah Waterman play and Chris Brandon will be able to jump back into the rotation having not lost the benefit of those 3 early games. That's my only solace. Like sam, I need some UD Titans hoops so I can claim some sense of normalcy in this very stressful year. Even Commissioner has not posted his usual pre-season guessing game for the vaunted Styrofoam Cup. I guess the NCAA did not grant him a waiver either even though they granted one to Nembhard and Gonzaga yesterday.

Until we get the waiver I will be sitting wondering if Vowels remembered to send in the request. I have been trying to watch the women's game on ESPN3 but I am getting the event should start shortly even though it is already at half time. On this one I am wondering if someone at Calihan forgot to throw the broadcast switch. At first I thought they might have forgotten there was a game today but Stats is carrying it.

This year could possibly be the toughest year for predictions to earn the prestigious styrofoam cup. As a past winner, I'm not sure I'd score a point outside of questions based on AD's scoring or shot attempts.

My provider doesn't include ESPN3 in its package but I tried anyway. Also got that "starting shortly" message. I'm guessing that's the default if you're not a subscriber. (Of course, I don't automatically assume someone at the University screwed up.) I followed the game on STATS. Incredibly slow start by both teams. X jumped to a lead, the Lady Titans almost caught up. Then X pulled away, and the Lady Titans almost caught up again. The Titans won the second period and the fourth, unfortunately got scorched in the first and third. We got killed on the boards, too many steals. Shooting percentages were about even, X just shot a lot more attempts. Lost by eight.
