Early entrant for MMWOTD:
San Francisco 61, Virginia 60. Awhile back I mentioned how I had been following the Dons and hoping the Titans can mirror their recent climb back to mid major relevance on the way to bigger things.
Edit: This was San Francisco's first win over a top five team since 1981. They were 0-12 since then.

Day 2 of the 2020-21 season had a lot of action. Horizon League: Toledo 80, Oakland 53. OU continues a rough start. Toledo bounces back the way they wanted to after a close loss on Wednesday. Darn shame about Oakland. Heh-heh. Toledo’s leading scorer - spencer littleson. He went 8-11 from 3! Was a local kid from Rochester, trained one x one with Rashad for years, went to Duquesne initially before transfer to Toledo. Bummer to see local talent deep away to Duquesne and MAC schools.

Speaking of guys that perhaps the Titans could have signed, Kevin McAdoo has 8 points in the first half for Bradley, the Braves currently up 15 over Oakland at the break. And Adrian Nelson had 19 rebounds for Northern Kentucky in their opener the other night.

Darn shame about Oakland. Heh-heh. Rashad Williams is injured. He was trying to play through a chronic shoulder injury and then got hurt again in the Toledo game. Oakland played zone defense a lot of the time in the tournament. This led to some statistics that should be brutally familiar to us Titan fans. Here are a few examples. FG%: Team - 27.5%, Opponent - 52.9%. 3P%: Team - 23.9%, Opponent - 44.3% Assists: Team - 22, Opponent - 81 They will get better. But it's a different Oakland team without any veteran post players like they had for their tenure in the HL to date. I wonder if Kampe will shut down Williams for the season.

Based on early return, could be a long season for OU.

Much confusion about Pearl. I will set it straight Dwayne “Pearl” Washington played at Syracuse...then several seasons with NJ Nets in 1980s. Earl “The Pearl” Monroe played at Winston Salem Univ...then the Baltimore Bullets in 1960s...then the NY Knicks and was a member of the 1973 NBA championship team.

Scoreboard for Friday, November 27:
Horizon Bradley 74, Oakland 60. As noted elsewhere, Rashad Williams is injured. OU loses all three games at Xavier, by 52, 27, and 14 points. This could turn into a long season very quickly. The good news? They're cutting the margin of defeat by 48% every time out.
Other Games of Interest Richmond 84, Morehead State 62. I doubt we'll play either this year, but maybe.
#1 Gonzaga 90, Auburn 67. Zags look awesome early San Francisco 61, #4 Virginia 60. The Dons (2-1) got caught looking past UMass-Lowell, but this is a pretty good rebound. And, obviously, your Mid-Major Win of the Day. Sam Hauser missed a last shot attempt that would have given UVa (1-1) the win. #5 Iowa 103, Southern 76.
#6 Kansas 94, St. Joe's 72. St. Joe's (0-2) led early. #7 Wisconsin 92, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 58 #8 Illinois 77, Ohio U. 75. The Bobcats (2-1) led by 4 with under 2 minutes to play, but couldn't hold it. Jason Preston had 31 points in defeat.
#14 Texas Tech 84, Sam Houston State 52 #15 West Virginia 70, Western Kentucky 64. Another one where the ranked team trailed the mid-major for much of the game. WKU (2-1) led by 3 at the half and by 10 with about 15 minutes to go, but the Mountaineers (3-0) held them to just 4 points in the next 9 minutes to go up 10, then held off a late rally.
#17 Houston 68, Boise State 58. #22 UCLA 107, Pepperdine 98 (3OT). #24 Rutgers 96, Farleigh Dickinson 75.
Vanderbilt 77, Valparaiso 71. Wonder if this was scheduled before Bryce got fired? Xavier 76, Toledo 73. Xavier wins all 3 of its opening invitational. Syracuse 85, Bryant 84. That's cutting it close. Louisville 71, Seton Hall 70.
Mercer 83, Georgia Tech 73. Tech opens with losses to Georgia State and now Mercer (2-0). Queens (NC) 85, Howard 71. Howard, much vaunted after signing 4 star recruit Makur Maker, drops to 0-2 after losing by double digits to the D-2 Royals. They lost to Belmont by 17 in their opener.
Appalachian State 105, Carver 23. Aw, c'mon.

Saturday, November 28:
Horizon UIC 74, Central Michigan 72. Juco transfer Rayquandis Mitchell paced UIC with 23 points and Braelin Bridges had 17 points and 13 rebounds as UIC got out to a 2-0 start. The Flames hit 44% from three to overcome a 19-7 Chippewa advantage in turnovers.
Northern Kentucky @ Chattanooga, ppd.
Other Games of Interest Michigan State 80, Notre Dame 70. The Spartans (3-0) took charge with a 26-0 run that straddled the halftime break. State blocked 10 Notre Dame shots in the first half.
#2 Baylor 112, Louisiana 82 Virginia Tech 81, #3 Villanova 73 (OT). How weird is this season? This game wasn't on the schedule. Tech was supposed to play Temple, but Temple is in quarantine. Which also meant Temple's upcoming game with Villanova was cancelled. So both teams were sitting around Mohegan Sun with looking for a game. Next thing you know they'll be playing Skins and Shirts. The game itself was a fun one. After being tied at the half, "Nova went up 11. Tech came back and took a one point lead with 1 second left on bucket by Keve Aluma. Aluma was fouled on the shot, and tried to intentionally miss the free throw, but it banked in, giving Tech a two point lead but Villanova a stopped clock. The Cats (2-1) suckered Tech into a charging foul on the in-bounds and made the foul shots to force OT, but Tech (2-0) took charge in the extra period.
#9 Duke 81, Coppin State 71.
St. Louis 85, Louisiana State 81. Jevonte Perkins had 32 for the Billikens (2-0). Army 78, Buffalo 74. You don't see Army get out to a 3-0 start much. Elon 76, High Point 75. Sorry, Tubby.
Mid Major Win of the Day: Liberty 78, South Carolina 62. Liberty (2-1) dominated the Gamecocks, picking up its second straight win over an SEC team. Darius McGhee made 7 three-pointers.

Carver College...somebody should book them for a annual Thanksgiving Day game (might be a better game to watch than the Loins).

Sunday, November 29
Horizon #25 Michigan 81, Oakland 71 (OT). We're 5 days into the season, and Oakland has 4 double digit losses. But today the score belies a very good game for the Griz. They led UM at halftime, and matched the Wolverines basket for basket in the second half before tiring in the extra period. I thought Juco Jalen Moore would be good, and he had 21 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists today to OU.
Other Games Richmond 76, #10 Kentucky 64. Your Mid-Major Win of the Day.
#2 Baylor 86, Washington 52. #11 Creighton 69, North Dakota State 58 #17 Houston 64, #14 Texas Tech 53 #18 Arizona State 100, Houston Baptist 77 #23 Ohio State 74, UMass-Lowell 64 #24 Rutgers 74, Hofstra 56
TCU 56, Liberty 52. Liberty (2-2) couldn't make it 3 in a row over P5 teams, but they tried. They were down 2 and got the ball 30 seconds left for a tying or winning shot, but turned it over.
Morehead State 69, Arkansas State 61.
Murray State 173, Greenville 95. The Racers raced today. Murray State had 87 points at halftime. They used 14 players, each of whom scored at least 7 points. The Racers shot 73.3% from the floor. The 173 points tied for the 4th highest total in NCAA history, the highest since Long Island tossed in 179 in a 1997 game. Probably a slew of school records set, too.
Rhode Island 84, San Francisco 71. The Dons come down from the win over Virginia.

The UM/OU game was a good one to be sure. OU still shot a measly 33% and was outrebounded 45-33. Even the eye test (admittedly I only saw the 2nd half) made it seem that UM SHOULD have had the game comfortably, but somehow OU scrapped and kept it tight. Moore was 4-19 from the field and most possessions involved him doing alot of dribbling, although they also do move their guys around and have more motion than our usual offenses that we've grown accustomed to seeing. Townsend is a frosh for OU and he played with a confidence you wouldn't expect from a freshman. He's athletic and one to keep an eye on. Hats off to OU for playing Michigan so tough. After having such a struggling stretch of games and blow out losses, they would've been forgiven if they rolled into a ball in Ann Arbor but they didn't do that at all.
Michigan should be quite good and interesting to watch as they develop this season. Their big guy Dickinson looks like a grown man, not a freshman. He has good hands as well, and the Wolves had some nice passing from 10 feet and in. Terrance Williams is another beast of a freshman, albeit with a hairstyle I don't quite get but alas I'm not accused of knowing what is 'hip' or 'modern' per se. What Juwan does with that program will be intriguing to watch, and what happens with them this season.
