A really fun game to watch yesterday was Georgetown vs St. John's. No, it wasn't Big John versus Carnesecca, but Patrick Ewing was on the sidelines as the Hoya coach, and the game was played at McDonough Arena, which was the location of the first game that Lou Carnesecca coached for St. John's in 1965. Georgetown rallied late to take a two point lead with .9 seconds left, but St. John's scored on a perfectly executed inbounds play to force overtime. OT was a nip and tuck battle, not decided until Hoya center Qudus Wahab blocked a SJU shot with 2 seconds left. On the night, Wahab did a solid impression of his coach, going for 17 points, 10 rebounds, and NINE blocks. I love college basketball. Sam, I watched that game, too; and, I still don't believe how St. John's scored on that inbounds play under the basket with 0.9 seconds left. And that all happened after a wild play that led to the go-ahead score by the Hoyas followed by another block by Wahab before the ball went out of bounds for the final play. That was just an up and down in your face game by two teams who left nothing on the floor at the end of the game. Games like that one are why I love watching the college game, too. titantarheel - don't you think this year's Oakland reminds is like our team two years ago when we had no rebounding except Blackshear; but when Antoine and Josh were shooting well in the same game, we could hang with a lot of teams?

Horizon Youngstown State 80,, West Virginia Tech 66. YSU scheduled a late game against NAIA WV Tech, looking for an easy win and a last pre-HL tune-up, only to find themselves down by six at halftime. In fact, WV Tech trailed for just 19 seconds in the first half. An 18-2 run that began about 6 minutes into the second half finally gave YSU the lead for good, and the Penguins cruised home from there. 22 points and 10 rebounds for Naz Bohannon, and 21 points for Darius Quisenberry. YSU is 3-0 but two of the wins are over NAIA teams.
A Few Games Unrelated to the Titans:
Central Michigan 91, St. Francis (Ill) 39. CMU joined YSU in punching down today. This is one of the non-D1 St. Francises, and the Fighting Saints kept it reasonably close (13 points) with a little 5-0 run to end the first half. The second half, Central (3-3) took the gloves off, outscoring the Saints 53-14.
Marquette 89, #9 Creighton 84. Detroiter and one-time Bacari Alexander recruiting target Greg Elliott made three three-pointers and scored 11 points in a 24-7 second half run that took Marquette from 8 down to 9 up. Big win for the Warriors Birds, who are 5-2.
#19 Rutgers 74, Maryland 60. Ron Harper, Jr. had 27 as Rutgers (5-0) downed Maryland (4-1). This may be Rutgers' best team since Dick Vitale recruit Phil Sellers took the Scarlet Knights to the Final Four in 1976.
William & Mary 85, George Washington 84 (OT). I wonder if they played this game in the House of Burgesses. That would be a kind of cool name for William & Mary's arena. The Tribe (how much longer will that name last?) is 1-1; the Colonials (how much longer will that name last?) fall to 1-5.

But, it appears he wasn't joking and I think that's amazing. A quick spin thru the internet notes that they were called the Falcons up until the 1970's when at that time they changed to the Fighting Saints (I kinda would've thought Fighting Saints was just really old school and stuck for decades, but alas they opted into it in modern times). Even better...their mascot is Bernie the St Bernhard. Points awarded all around for this because the cartoon rendering shows he's tough but lovable (complete with the bourbon barrel hanging from his collar) plus he's of course named for a saint. I'll ignore that the real life mascot Bernie suit isn't great, spirited or tough. St Francis of Illinois, you are now on my candidate list to be one of the next members of the Horizon! Thank you Commish for taking me down this rabbit hole, I found it enjoyable...

I'm especially fond of Bernese Mountain Dogs, and Buckley, pictured here, was my favorite of all the Berners and all the dogs. Anyway, he's not a St. Bernard, but he does have the little keg in this photo. That was a real keg, too. You could take Buckley on a walk on a cold, winter day (he'd be like, "finally, some decent weather!"), and have him carry a few nips of bourbon or brandy for you.

A few games on a mid-December night
#10 Tennessee 79, Appalachian State 38. #12 Wisconsin 77, Loyola 63. Now and then I hope people appreciate that I refuse to identify our old friend Loyola with an (Ill) after the name. The other Loyolas need that, because they're imposters. But this is the real Loyola. A 19-2 Badger run early in the second half blew open what had been a 1-point game, and the Ramblers (3-1) take their first loss of the year. Wisconsin is 5-1.
#13 Illinois 92, Minnesota 65. The Golden Gophers' 6-0 start ended with a thud. Kofi Cockburn had 33 points and 13 rebounds for the Illini (5-2). #15 Florida State 74, Georgia Tech 61. Virginia Tech 66, #24 Clemson 60.
Alabama 83, Furman 80. The Paladins (5-2) let this one slip away. Alabama didn't get its first lead until James Rojas hit a three with 1:18 left to play, completing a comeback from deficits of as much as 16. For the game, Herb Jones led the Tide (4-2) with 18 points 12 boards, and 4 assists.
St. Louis 78, Indiana State 59. St. Bonaventure 81, Akron 74. The Bonnies finally get their season underway. Osun Osunniyi led the way with 25 points and 8 rebounds.
Georgia Southern 92, Carver Bible 27. Carver Bible, an NCCAA team (National Christian Collegiate Athletic Association) has opened the season with 10 consecutive D-1 opponents (all lower mid-majors), and lost all 10, by an average of 56.7 points. They play Liberty tomorrow, then 3 more D-1 teams before the end of the month.

Wednesday, December 16
Titan Non-Conference Opponents #21 Duke 75, Notre Dame 65.
Some games
#7 Villanova 85, Butler 66. Butler (1-1) played for the first time since nipping Western Michigan 3 weeks ago. #11 Texas 79, Sam Houston State 63.
Purdue 67, #20 Ohio State 60. The Buckeyes are not playing well right now.
Toledo 96, Marshall 87 (OT). Toledo (5-3) blew a 10 point lead in the final four minutes of regulation, but scored the first 8 in the extra period to douse previously unbeaten Marshall (4-1). Marreon Jackson scored 14 points in the overtime to finish with 23.
Georgia State 88, Mercer 81. Corey Allen had 16 for Georgia State (4-1). Corey is averaging 15.6 point and shooting over 50% from three. TCU 77, Oklahoma State 76. TCU (6-2) scored the game's final 9 points to take the Cowboys (6-1) out of the unbeaten column. South Florida 74, Cincinnati 71. John Brannon's Bearcats are just 2-3. Richmond 78, Vanderbilt 67. The Spiders led by 24 at halftime.
Carver College Follies: Liberty 91, Carver 38.
Mid-Major Win of the Day: UTEP 76, Arizona State 63.

The Buckeyes have no consistent scoring with Lidell out and Towns never yet having played. If, and it's a big if, they get their entire roster healthy... they'll be a tough out come tournament time. If they suit up without Walker or Lidell, they could lose to almost anybody.
Corey Allen has been fantastic this season, averaging 15.5 ppg on just over 10 shots... while pulling down 5 rebounds and a couple assists as well. Really wish he'd have stuck around. Impressive get for Coach Ray and he's proven it each year he's been on the court.

Montana makes a late bid for Mid Major Win of the Day, with a 66-58 victory over Washington. Montana is now 2-4.
If PAC 12 teams keep dropping buy games, we might have to reconsider if a win over one of them is worthy of the award.

Thursday, December 17
Interesting Games #5 Kansas 58, #14 Texas Tech 57. A thriller in Lubbock! #9 Creighton 94, St. John's 76.
Seton Hall 70, Marquette 63. St. Louis 80, North Carolina State 69. The Billikens dropped 51 points on the Wolfpack in the second half. St. Louis is 6-0. NC State (3-1) lost for the first time this year.
Mid Major Win of the Day: Drexel 81, St. Joe's 77. St. Joe's (0-3) is really bad this year, so this isn't much of an upset, if it's an upset at all. But Drexel (4-2) has to be celebrating after beating its crosstown rival from the A10. This game went back and forth and wasn't decided until Mate Okros hit a pair of free throws with 6 seconds to play. Senior James Butler led the way with 21 points and 16 rebounds.

Poor Drexel, they have a competitive record against their Philadelphia brethren but the Dragons cannot get added to the membership of the prestigious "Big 5" (the University of Pennsylvania, La Salle University, Saint Joseph's University, Temple University, and Villanova University) and compete for a Philadelphia city championship. A few fun facts about Drexel: - Drexel was the 5th US school to start up collegiate basketball, their first season being 1894–1895.
- The Dragons joined Division I in 1974.
- On February 22, 2018, Drexel came back from a 34 point deficit (trailing 53-19 at one point), defeating Delaware 85-83 for the largest comeback in Division I history.
- Drexel is one of the only four NCAA Division I schools that doesn't sponsor volleyball and doesn't sponsor baseball (the others being Boston University, Detroit Mercy, and Vermont).

Friday, December 18
Horizon League Bowling Green 85, Robert Morris 65. Robert Morris (1-1) took a thumpin', despite 20 points from AJ Bramah. Detroiter Justin Turner continued to star for Bowling Green (5-2), with 24 points tonight.
Titan Non-Conference Opponents Western Michigan 76, Central Michigan 61. Western (2-4) shot 56% from the floor. I don't know if CMU (3-4) tried any 1-3-1 zone.
Some other games #8 West Virginia 70, Iowa State 65. The Mountaineers (7-1) scored the final 6 points of the game to eek out the win. #10 Tennessee 103, Tennessee Tech 49. Former future Oakland star CJ Gettlefinger came off the bench to score two points for Tech, but it wasn't enough as big brother UT rolled. Six Vols scored in double fingers, led by freshman Jaden Springer with 21.
BYU 72, #18 San Diego State 62. BYU (7-2) jumped out a 16 point first half lead, and appeared in control until a 14-0 Aztec run tied it at 61 with just under 2 minutes to play. Matt Mitchell scored 11 points in the rally, and got the assist on the Aztecs other three. But BYU responded with an 11-1 run to close out the game. The Aztecs fell to 5-1 with their first loss, despite 35 points from Mitchell.
Howard 81, Hampton 76. Howard (1-4) finally got a W on the board. They're playing without their 4-star freshman Makur Maker. Niagara 68, Fairfield 51. Catholic ball at its near worst. Drake 75, South Dakota 57. Drake is 7-0. Davidson 67, Rhode Island 58.
Carver College Follies: The Cougars fell to Georgia State tonight, 122-57. The Cougars are now 0-12 against D-1 teams this year, losing by an average of 57.1 points. They've not been high majors, either--Georgia State is probably the best program they've lost to. At some point, that has to be demoralizing. Cory Allen scored just 9 for Georgia State in 21 minutes, before the scrubs came in for the second half.

Some more scoreboard news and former Titan tracking.
Currently, former GB Phoenix forward Shanquan "Tank" Hemphill is leading Drake scorers at a 12.4 ppg clip.
Also, last night, formerly scheduled opponent Richmond 75 - Loyola (Chi) 73. A real former OU star point guard, Braden Norris, led the Ramblers with 21 points on 5-9 three point shooting, 5 assists and played 39 minutes against the Spiders.
Two nights ago, former Titan Marquis Moore had 3 points and 3 rebounds in 13 minutes for Southern Utah as his team held off the surprising Dixie State Ramblers 85-76.
Former Titan Boe Nguidjol's Prairie View team is on a COVID pause. Boe was not playing anyway; but he may now be eligible due to the blanket waiver. It was unclear whether or not he had been granted a waiver.
Former Titan Alonde LeGrand's North Florida Osprey's game at Florida was canceled due to the Keyontae Johnson injury. Alonde is playing about the same minutes per game for North Florida as Marquis is playing at Southern Utah, but he has less production per game for the Ospreys than Marquis has at So Utah.

Friday, December 18#10 Tennessee 103, Tennessee Tech 49. Former future Oakland star CJ Gettlefinger came off the bench to score two points for Tech, but it wasn't enough Commish snuck in this hilarious nugget regarding the 54 point loss by Tenn Tech, it needs to be highlighted for its wit. Made me snicker this morning, thank you Commish! PS - the Carver Follies is also a dynamite new feature on the Big Board. Who knew Commish would be innovating so much?!
