Can we agree that Kool, Fraser and Johnson are a vast improvement over Moore, Boe and LeGrand? Yes, I think everyone would agree with that.

Friday, December 11
Horizon Kansas State 76, Milwaukee 75. Milwaukee scored the game's first 7 points, then surrendered 14 in a row. After that the Wildcats led most of the way, but couldn't put the Panthers away. With 1 second left, K State's Nijel Pack missed two free throws, just to keep it exciting, but the Panthers long throw was intercepted. Juco transfer D'Andre Gholston led Milwaukee with 15 in the season opener. A moral victory for the Panthers, but the Horizon could really use some actual scoreboard victories.
Other Games of Note
#3 Iowa 105, Iowa State 77. Bragging rights with a capital B. Luke Garza had 34 for the Hawkeyes (5-0). #5 Kansas 95, Omaha 50. #8 Creighton 98, Nebraska 74. Wish our local Jesuit school could stick it to Big State U like this now and then. #9 Villanova 76, Georgetown 63. Villanova 5-1 trailed by 13 at the half. Good pep talk, I assume.
#11 West Virginia 62, North Texas 50.
UCLA 69, Marquette 60. Somewhat surprisingly, this is only the 3rd meeting ever between these two, and never in the NCAA tournament. UCLA won the first two, the last way back in 1964. Now the series is 3-0, so it will take Marquette about a century to catch up.
Seton Hall 77, St. John's 68. Massachusetts 94, Northeastern 79. Tre Mitchell had 31 points and 11 boards for the Minutepeople. This was the season opener for both schools.
South Dakota State 74, North Dakota 62. North Dakota State 74, South Dakota 67. The Dakotas split their two-day war. These two teams entered the game a combined 0-8.
St. Peter's 70, Niagara 54. Southern Illinois 70, Murray State 66.
Mid-Major Win of the Day: Grand Canyon 87, Nevada 77. I know, it's a sorta low mid-major beating a sorta high mid-major, but it will have to do for today. Nice win for Grand Canyon (4-0).

Saturday, December 12
Horizon Detroit 67, Western Michigan 57. Well, credit Coach for going to that 1-3-1. The Titans only shot 40.5%--not including another poor outing by Antoine Davis, who was just 6-18 from the floor (he's now 4-34 from three on the season). But the 1-3-1 totally flummoxed and bamboozled the Broncos, and the Titans continued to knock down free throws--16 of 19 today (the Titans outscored Western by 10 from the line, not coincidentally their exact margin of victory). Willy Isiani played good defense, and had 12 rebounds and a couple of big buckets in the Titans second half rally. Dwayne Rose continued to play well, and the Three Grad Transfers (you might remember their folk hit "Lane Drivin' Man") each hit double figures. Nice game, and a badly needed win before conference play starts next weekend.
IUPUI 69, Tennessee State 66. The Jaguars used a 12-0 run starting midway through the second half to open an 8 point lead, saw it shrink back to one in final minute, but held on with some Marcus Burk free throws. For IUPUI, Eli Goss had 16 rebounds, and Burk had 18 points, but the Jags (1-0) got nice contributions from soph Mike DePersia, with 10 points and 8 assists, and 6-10 juco transfer Dimitar Pandev, with 17 points.
Titan Non-Conference Opponents Notre Dame 64, Kentucky 63. Just seems odd to see these two meeting with neither in the top 25. Notre Dame opened up a big early lead in this one--they were up 24 points midway through the first half and still up 22 at halftime. The drought came in the second half, starting with about 4 minutes in. Notre Dame stayed stuck at 53 points for almost 10 minutes, as Kentucky cut a 20 point deficit to 4. The Irish pushed the lead back to 9 with just over 2 minutes to play, but the Wildcats stormed back with a combination of old-fashioned and new-fangled 3-point plays, and had a chance to win it at the buzzer. But Oliver Ssar, who had 22 points on 11-16 shooting, missed the jumper. Nate Lascewski led the Irish with 21 points and 9 rebounds, but didn't score after the 17:30 mark of the second half--summing up this game, I think.
Other Games Central Michigan 84, Valparaiso 79. Central (2-3) has looked much better since opening 0-3, including a l9 point loss to D-2 Flagler. Today they shot 60% from behind the arc. Our old friends from Indiana are 2-4.
Missouri 81, #6 Illinois 78. Maybe not a classic, but certainly a worthy game in one of college hoops' best rivalries. This was very game all the way and wasn't over until the Illini's Ayo Dosunmu, who scored 36 points, missed a potential game-tying three with 4 seconds left. Even then, the Illini had a last ditch chance after Missou's Kobe Brown missed a pair of free throws with 2 seconds left and Kobe Cockburn rebounded, but Illinois couldn't get off a final shot. Missouri is 4-0 and will probably enter the Top 25 on Monday.
#12 Tennessee 65, Cincinnati 56. #16 North Carolina 73, North Carolina Central 67. NC Central put a little fear of God into the Tarheels early, leading by 8 before a 10-0 UNC run to close the first half. The Eagles hung around for about 10 minutes in the second half, but finally got ground under the Tarheel boot. A late rally made the game seem a bit closer than it was.
#17 Texas Tech 77, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 57. #20 Florida State 83, Florida 71.
Dayton 86, Mississippi State 82 (2OT). In the second OT, Jalen Crutcher missed a free throw to ice the game with 6 seconds left. But he made one with 2 seconds left and Dayton (3-1) got the win. DJ Stewart had 32 for Mississippi State (3-3).
Arizona 69, UTEP 61. BYU 82, Utah 64. Oklahoma State 67, Wichita State 64. The Cowboys (6-0) won when Wichita's at-the-buzzer trey for the tie was off the mark. TCU 73, Texas A&M 55. More lopsided than even the score indicates, which surprised me. Wyoming 93, Utah Valley 88. Notable for a couple of individual performances: 30 points, 7 rebounds, 8 assists for Hunter Maldonado of Wyoming (5-1); 27 points and 20 rebounds for Fardaws Aimaq of Utah Valley (2-3).
Toledo 64, UMKC 57. St. Peter's 53, Niagara 49. Belmont 81, Lipscomb 71. Big mid-major rivalry in Nashville. Dixie State 73, Denver 70. Dixie State is off to a 3-0 start in its first D-1 season.
Our Lady of the Lake 61, Texas State 58. OLL, a Sisters of Divine Providence school in San Antonio that plays NAIA, outscored Texas State 23-9 over the final 9 minutes to pull off a big upset.
Mid-Major Win of the Day: Florida Gulf Coast 66, Miami (Fl) 62. Dakota Rivers (that's a guy, not a place) hit a huge trey to give FGCU (3-1) a 6 point lead with 40 seconds left, and the Eagles went 4-4 from the line in the final 15 seconds to clinch the win. Miami, which beat Purdue earlier this week, drops to 3-1.

The Dayton/Mississippi State game was another great college basketball game that I've watched this young season. And it's an indication of how far the Dayton program has come that them beating an SEC team isn't really that noteworthy.
I watched the Kentucky/Georgia Tech game earlier this season, basically a scouting mission when I thought the U-D/UK game was still doing to happen. The Wildcats have serious guard issues. They aren't a good outside shooting team, but so many of their possessions end with that kind of shot. I think they will be better by the end of the season, but this looks like a down year for UK.

Couple of other games worth noting from yesterday.
Syracuse 101, Boston College 63. BC's previous game was a loss to Minnesota in which the Eagles blew a 15 point second half lead. Brutal two game stretch. During the game Syracuse guard Buddy Boeheim passed his father Jim on the all time Syracuse scoring list. Jim scored 745 points in his career.
Oregon 74, Washington 71. Washington drops to 1-4. The Fighting Phil Knights are 4-1. Michigan native Eric Williams had 13 points and 7 boards for Oregon.
Clemson 64, Alabama 56. It's early, but Clemson looks good. They have wins over Miss State, Purdue, Maryland, and now the Tide.

Sunday, December 13
Horizon Michigan State 109, Oakland 91. The Grizz are 0-7, losing by an average of 26 points per game, and surrendering an average of 89 points per game. Admittedly it's been a very tough slate: their opponents are a combined 35-7 on the season, and four are undefeated (although only the Spartans are ranked). Still, this kind of scheduling just kills the league RPI and NET numbers. It will be interesting to see if it pays off--they got a good payoff in dollars, but I mean on the court. Rashad Williams was pretty awesome today, with 36 points, and Jalen Moore added 26. But the defense was a sieve, and the Spartans (6-0) shot 51% overall and 41% on a whopping 37 three-point attempts. OU did hang around for a good length of time, and a three by Williams followed by a two by Moore closed the gap to a point early in the second half. MSU responded with 13 straight and wasn't seriously threatened after.
Wright State 85, Bowling Green 67. The Titans look to have their hands full when Wright State visits Calihan next weekend. The league's nearly unanimous pre-season favorite looked pretty awesome today against a decent BGSU squad. The Raiders shot 67% in the first half and led by 33 points at halftime. Interestingly, even with that lead, Coach Nagy stuck with his 6 man rotation through the second half, with 5 others getting only garbage time in the final few minutes. Tanner Holden led the scoring with 19, and Loudon Love had 16 points and 16 rebounds. Wright State is 2-1; Bowling Green 4-2.
Youngstown State 79, Binghamton 65. The Penguins (2-0) won their first game against D-1 competition, overcoming a 38-31 halftime deficit. Naz Bohannon had 23 and Darius Quisenberry topped the career 1000 point mark with 17. Michael Akuchie added 14 points and 11 rebounds. Binghamton is 0-3.
Milwaukee 71, Western Michigan 63. Milwaukee took the lead with a 13-4 run to end the first half, and kept the Broncos at bay through the second period, though it was tight all the way. Te'Jon Lucas led Milwaukee (1-1) with 16. Titus Wright, the big man who gave the Titans a lot of first half trouble on the way to a double-double on Saturday, was a non-factor, with 3 points on 1-5 shooting. Up's guy, Jason Whitens, had a career high 16 for WMU (1-4).
Kent State 92, Northern Kentucky 73. I like to see Horizon teams win non-conference games, but we can take some solace that NKU did no better against Kent State than we did. Indeed, the Golden Flash led this one by 15 at halftime and NKU never made a serious second half run. There were positives for NKU (2-3): The guys they need to have big years had big games, Trevon Faulkner with 28 points, and Adrian Nelson with a 4-8 shooting night, 14 rebounds, 4 steals, and a couple assists and a block. Nelson is averaging 12.5 rebounds per game. 6-9 freshman David Bohm had 19 points. Danny Pippen had 19 for Kent State (3-1).
Loyola 77, UIC 66. UIC trailed almost all the way. They got to within 6 early in the second half, but the Ramblers responded with 9 straight points and that was that. Michael Diggins led UIC (3-2) with 16 points and 9 rebounds.
#22 Ohio State 67, Cleveland State 61. After last weekend's embarrassment against Ohio U., the Vikings (0-3) showed some real grit today. They surrendered the game's first 6 points, and could have folded early. Instead, CSU closed to within a point, and while the Vikings never led, Ohio State's lead never reached double digits. Their prize juco, D'Moi Hodge, led the Vikings with 14 points. CSU is still without their all-conference forward, Al Eichelberger.
Other Games Michigan 62, Penn State 58. Freshman center Hunter Dickinson tied the game with a bucket with just over 2 minutes to play, then put Michigan ahead on its next possession with another basket. Penn State missed three attempts to tie or take the lead, and a couple of Isaiah Livers free throws with 5 second left gave UM the final margin. Dickinson finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds as Juwan's bunch goes to 6-0.
#3 Iowa 106, Northern Illinois 53. #11 West Virginia 87, #19 Richmond 71. WVU (6-1) led by 22 at halftime. #23 Arizona State 71, Grand Canyon 70. Arizona State (4-2) needed a trey by Remy Martin in the closing seconds to best Grand Canyon (4-1). Martin finished with 32 points.
Marshall 81, Ohio U. 67. Ohio lost to Illinois by just two and dropped that bomb on Cleveland State last week. But Marshall is looking good--they crushed Wright State earlier and are now 4-0.
California 72, San Francisco 70. The Golden Bears (3-4) needed a three at the buzzer to nip the Dons (5-3). The basket by Makale Foreman was his only points of the game, and gave Cal its only lead of the game.
Drake 81, Air Force 53. Drake is 6-0.
Mid-Major Win of the Day: Northeastern 78, Massachusetts 75. This is the best we've got today, as upset bids by San Francisco and especially Grand Canyon came up short. Northeastern avenged a loss to UMass on Friday. Some odd scheduling going on in this pandemic year.

Ohio State (minus EJ Lidell) looked about as bad as they could look today. That said, CSU played with heart from start to finish. They don't appear to be a very talented team, but the coach had them hustling today. No easy baskets for OSU during the 35 minutes that I caught.

A really fun game to watch yesterday was Georgetown vs St. John's. No, it wasn't Big John versus Carnesecca, but Patrick Ewing was on the sidelines as the Hoya coach, and the game was played at McDonough Arena, which was the location of the first game that Lou Carnesecca coached for St. John's in 1965. Georgetown rallied late to take a two point lead with .9 seconds left, but St. John's scored on a perfectly executed inbounds play to force overtime. OT was a nip and tuck battle, not decided until Hoya center Qudus Wahab blocked a SJU shot with 2 seconds left. On the night, Wahab did a solid impression of his coach, going for 17 points, 10 rebounds, and NINE blocks.
I love college basketball.

That OU/MSU game...OU shot 50% from the field and 53% from 3, forced 18 Spartan turnovers, and STILL lost by 18 with the game not really in doubt for the 2nd half as Commish noted. They were however outrebounded by an astounding 52-20 overall, and 20-3 on the offensive glass. I'd say the weakness is evident with the Pioneers this year, esp given the strength of their backcourt.
