Thought I would start a thread on tomorrow’s pop-up game against the Our Lady Fighting Irish. Here’s a link to the game notes from the University of Notre Dame du Lac: und.com/irish-to-face-detroit-m ... me-opener/ Wait a minute! You mean to tell me that Notre Dame has an "official", longer name for the University, but uses a different name to avoid confusion and for branding purposes? Genius!

I always like when the Titans play Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish have been a fixture in college basketball ever since I started following the sport. Digger Phelps had them rolling back then, and kept them almost a constant participant in the NCAA tournament until he retired. The program slipped a bit under Jon MacLeod, but Mike Brey got them back on course at the dawn of the new century, with consistent twenty win seasons and NCAA bids. The last three years haven't met that standard, but as Calihan Mole has pointed out before, Notre Dame is setting up nicely for 2021-22.
Local connection: Former Notre Dame players Kelly Tripucka, Bill Laimbeer, Jon Shumate, Orlando Woolridge, and the great Adrian Dantley played for the Detroit Pistons.
No line yet for this game, but since we lost to MSU by seven and the Spartans beat the Irish by ten, I'm favoring the Titans by three. Go Titans!

I'm no sure if some of these name school bookings are because of the virus or Coach Davis, but playing MSU, ND, and almost KY are fun games for Titan people, especially when they can hang with a MSU

Twenty-eight Irish predictions. Three predict a Titan victory (two by 7 points, one by 3). For the 25 ND victory predictions, average predicted margin: ND by 13. One New Yorker (Upper East Side Irish??) thinks Detroit Mercy will lose by 30. Their over/under is 142.

The ND board has a season long competition where everyone predicts each game. Most people stick close to the spread. If you read the comments for the other thread about how UDM did well against MSU you’ll read comments about how the Titans are more athletic.

The big question tonight needing an answer is whether we will play with the intensity that we displayed Friday at MSU. That will tell us whether Friday was a one-off against a ranked opponent or whether we truly have a much better team chemistry. If we play with anything close to Friday's intensity, then the result will matter less to me (unless of course we win).
Antoine has tweeted several times over the past months (including right after the MSU game) that he believes this is a special team with great drive and chemistry. We have much more length and speed on the wings than in past years. And when Brandon returns later this week, Waterman gets his waiver and Koka joins the line-up, then Kuol can move to the 3 spot and better use his outside shooting ability.
In last year's game, Hubb ate us up when we played mostly zone defense. ND has two taller players, Lasczewski (6'10") and Durham (6'11"). And Brey started both in their only game this year at MSU which they lost 80-70. Otherwise, our match-ups are similar to the ones we had at MSU. Hubb did score 23 at MSU and shot 36% from 3 point range.
ND will be fully rested. Their only game was Nov 28th. This will be a good game to get us ready for the HL back-to-back schedule. Can we keep Willy and Bul out of foul trouble? Or can Taurean step in and have moments of production that help negate the size advantage possessed by ND? Most importantly, are we still hung over from MSU or are we ready to battle again tonight? Because, if we are ready to battle again, we can give ND a real fight tonight with our wings and help defense offsetting whatever size deficit we have at the 4 and 5 spots.

Looks like the biggest problem going forward for Coach Davis will be having enough floor time to meet needs especially when Waterman, Brandon and Thompson are ready.

I am really impressed with Fraser and Johnson.

Notre Dame was just too big physically and with a few bounces we could have won this one. I thought everyone who played played well. Joey Liedel touched the ball one time and drilled a long three so he is 1 - 1 and the release was quick. I had Willie with 11 rb. 4 pts. a block and three assists.

The Titans answered my question tonight with a resounding positive. I really like this team. We add Brandon next week and maybe Waterman soon. They are fearless and relentless. And sam's early assessment of Johnson was spot on. Izzo should have consulted his posts here for a better scouting report. We have more work to do, but I think the pre-season experts in the HL were completely wrong about our Titans. You think recruits will want to come and play this tempo of basketball? You think local players will want to come here and play this tempo?

Kids played hard. No shame in losing to the flagship university of the Catholic Church and the greatest university in the world.
