Very nice hire! A lot of surprised coaches when she was let go at Loyola. One coach from the MVC who I talked to last week called it a great hire for UDM.

I like all the connections coaching at Catholic universities— Loyola, Xavier, St. Bonaventure. Achter also has Ohio roots which may help familiarize her with the recruiting region. Nowhere to go but up.

Official press release. Twitter link is glitchy. With the use of "New Era", I wonder if a potato chip deal is in the works.

Only 3 Lady Titans in transfer portal. No Spaniards and no one averaging more than 5ppg. In fact, two of three only averaged 1ppg.

These are generalizations that aren't always true but: 1. Female student athletes in DI, as a group, tend to value the educational experience /degree earned more than their male counterparts do 2. Foreign students who are given the opportunity to come to America and get a full-ride scholarship tend to be more loyal to the school that gave them that opportunity than their American counterparts
NIL is a cat-out-of-the-bag travesty. In retrospect, I wonder if allowing schools to give each student athlete a monthly stipend (say $2,000) would have staved off this insanity, at least for a while longer. That would have been something I could have lived with. Compared to the legal breakthrough that Spencer Haywood made, this is much larger because it not only affects more student athletes, but, as The Mole has pointed out, it creates a platform that makes it much easier for Ed Martin-type shenanigans. And yes, these are shenanigans. I don't need a college basketball player endorsing the products I purchase, and, I suspect, neither do you.

Your generalizations are spot-on.

Titan Club members have been invited to a Zoom call welcoming coach Achter on Tuesday, May 3, at 11:00 a.m. “Coach Achter will address everyone on what she sees as her vision for the program and take questions.” I plan to listen in on the call (assume other posters on this message board will also join in) and will pass along any information that comes out.

And yes, these are shenanigans. I don't need a college basketball player endorsing the products I purchase, and, I suspect, neither do you. I wouldn't mind student athletes endorsing products, and the idea that they should have some ability to profit from that value has appeal. Just to use an example, a few years back a couple Ohio State players got in trouble for taking small amounts of money to frequent a tatoo parlor, and from a pure market transaction, they were probably worth what they were paid. The problem here is that these NIL deals bear no relationship to the actual NIL value. They are not being paid for the advertising/endorsement value of their name/image/likeness, they are being paid to play basketball. OK, but at that point the notion of students playing for a school they attend as students is pretty much dead, and that's much of the appeal of the college game. Otherwise, you just have minor league basketball. Granted, all that has been eroding for a long time. But this rips off the last vestiges of amateurism.

Nice opportunity to hear from the new coach this morning on the 45 minute Zoom call. Achter was poised, articulate, friendly throughout, I think the young coach will connect well with recruits and the Titan fan base.
She grew up in the Toledo area, family still lives there (staying with them in the short term). Her immediate focus seems to be meeting with the current players. Wants players to stay, not looking to push anybody out. Understands the realities of the transfer portal but preference is to recruit high school players who will stick around, only way to build a team culture. Mentioned our HS commit from West Bloomfield and my sense was she was still in the fold. Also referenced the Spaniard players, sounded like they want to stay.
Currently engaged in putting together a staff. Indicated one of the assistants from Loyola would likely be selected, going through the HR process now. Wants to add an assistant with ties to the Detroit area. Someone mentioned the Toledo high schools joining the Detroit Catholic League, she was familiar with that and said that might open additional recruiting inroads. Wants to have an elite camp in the summer as a way to develop local connections and build relationships with potential recruits.
She has coaching in her bloodlines, coached by dad in high school. Grandfather was a CYO coach.
Somebody asked if she would bring Sister Jean along from Loyola. She laughed and said the nun was too fragile to travel from Chicago. It was mentioned that we have the equivalent in our own Fr. Cavanagh and she looks forward to meeting him.
Dan Kennedy said it was important for her to be at the Titan Golf Outing in August and she said would be there, a golfer herself she perhaps would bring a foursome from Toledo.
Wants to see immediate progress in wins next season of course but thought realistically it might be year-three before things mesh as the staff, roster, and culture come together. Sounds like she came to the interview in Detroit with a PowerPoint presentation that outlined a five-year plan for developing the Titan program.
Seemed knowledgeable about the Horizon League, mentioned IUPUI and Green Bay as the better WBB programs. Talked about scheduling, apparently next year’s is pretty set. Michigan State is an opponent, said Michigan was interested in a match. Said it was important to get more home games, appears she understands the dangers of over scheduling especially with a developing team.
She said she prefers a ball screen, more controlled offense, stressed the importance of defense. Not locked into a specific style of play, more important that things mesh with the skill sets of our roster.
Vowels was on the call. Sounded like the decision to go in a new direction wasn’t finalized until the season was over. There were more than a hundred inquiries regarding the position, four finalists identified, things moved quickly in the span of a couple weeks. He complimented the search committee for their efforts.

Nice summary of the call. One comment that caught my attention was her assessment that she had more pieces in place than she did when she took over her Loyola team. Surprising to hear and another compliment to Coach Collins who had nothing.
I am not arguing about the hire. I think it is a great hire. I will always remember Coach Collins as a nice person and a coach that brought us through a very tough time. I am also far more enthused about WBB than MBB program these days. Not Coach Davis's fault, just the whole state of D1 MBB.
