I think the vast majority of observers would put the WAC ahead of the HL these days. Stone definitely moved down to the HL. WAC used to be something: Air Force Academy, Arizona, Arizona State, Utah, Utah State, Boise State, BYU, Idaho, Rice, Colorado State, UNLV, New Mexico, San Diego State, San Jose State, SMU, TCU, UTEP, Tulsa, and Wyoming. But what would be the reaction on this board if Detroit Mercy decided to move to the Western Athletic Conference with: Abilene Christian California Baptist Grand Canyon New Mexico State (leaving after this season) Sam Houston State (leaving after this season) Seattle Southern Utah Stephen F. Austin State Tarleton State UT-Arlington Texas Rio Grande Valley (merger of Texas Pan Am, formerly Edinburg University, and UT Brownsville) Utah Tech (formerly Dixie State) Utah Valley Would that be a step up for the Titans? Most of those are not “attractive” names in college basketball circles, and the travel would be clearly crazy. I’m not advocating we join the WAC. But I would argue that if UDM moved from its current membership in the 30th rated conference to the 11th rated conference, it would objectively be a step up. I don’t see how anyone can make the case that transferring from a school (with far better facilities, fan support, recent success) in the 11th ranked conference to a school in the 30th ranked conference is anything but a step down. It’s completely irrelevant who used to be in either conference or that several members of the current WAC are not household names.

If one of our players left for Tarleton State or Utah Tech would we say that student had moved up a level?

If one of our players left for Tarleton State or Utah Tech would we say that student had moved up a level? I would call it essentially a lateral move in terms of the programs involved (Tarleton State currently ranked #75, Utah Tech #114, Detroit Mercy #135), but clearly they would be transferring to a much better (by objective game metric standards) conference.

I, for one, wouldn't want to see us in the WAC as a personal preference. That said, Rogo is absolutely accurate in his comment that 11 < 30.
I've had that one on a math test before and I'd gotten it correct.

I’m even okay with accepting the proposition that the WAC and the Horizon are “essentially equivalent” leagues in the big scheme of things. I just don’t see how you can make the case that the WAC is comparatively a “lower level” conference than the HL given the numbers.

I can't see how the WAC is rated# 11.

I can't see how the WAC is rated# 11. Science. Putting mathematical metrics 25% into the season aside, I agree that there isn’t as much difference in the two conferences as the numbers would seem to suggest. But again, there is no way anyone can convince me that in 2022 spacetime the WAC is a lower level league than the Horizon.

But again, there is no way anyone can convince me that in 2022 spacetime the WAC is a lower level league than the Horizon. This all should probably have its own thread, but... What is interesting (upsetting? alarming? disturbing?) to me is that just a few years ago the WAC -- a muscular conference in the 70s, 80s, and early 90s, until the best schools split off to form the Mountain West--almost imploded. It looked like the conference would not survive. To survive, they took in Chicago State, Texas-Rio Grande Valley, and a bunch of schools new to D-1--Grand Canyon, Bakersfield, Utah Valley. They sprawled all over the country. But those schools have ratcheted up their game, and now appear to have passed us up again. It's tough to swallow that Utah Tech (nee Dixie State), Tarlton State, Abilene Christian, Cal Baptist etc. can form a better conference than the HL.

77 not lower, but not #11 compared to #30. I can't see that.

The Horizon only began recognizing a "Freshman of the Week" in 2014. In the first six years (through 2019), Titan players won the award 20 times, more than any other team, but none since until Jones this week.
Titan winners: Matthew Grant, 2014 (1) Jared Williams, 2014 (1) Paris Bass, 2015 (4) Josh McFolly, 2016 (2) Cory Allen, 2017 (3) Jermaine Jackson, Jr., 2018 (1) Antoine Davis, 2019 (7) Isaiah Jones, 2023 (1 and counting)
All Time Winners by Team Oakland 25 Northern Kentucky 24 Detroit 20 Wright State 16 UIC 15 Green Bay 14 Cleveland State 10 Valparaiso 9 Youngstown State 6 Milwaukee 4 IUPUI 2 Robert Morris 0 Purdue Fort Wayne 0

Not sure what has happened here? Jones has to contribute more to this team than Parks and Koka. Why is he now lower on the rotation than Houston Pink. WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?

I'm with you on this Up. Makes no sense. For one I am tired of Coach's mantra of we have to get better. If your #342 in defense maybe its time to change an assistant coach IMO.

Changing assistant coaches won't do it, the program needs a house cleaning.
