Per Verbal Commits, Isaiah Jones has entered the transfer portal. I feared this post when I saw the topic line. This was obvious the last 10 games of the season. Jones didn’t get a lot of floor time and some how Koka and Pink moved in front of him in the rotation. He played well when he did get in. If he was my son I would tell him to get out of there ASAP and don’t look back. If a coach puts Koka in front of a player he is telling that player that he feels that player is not a basketball player! |

Yes. Tankersley and Jones should have gotten alot more minutes this season, in my opinion. Downside... maybe we end up 13-20 and don't get invited to the CBI. Upside... we possibly keep some talented underclassmen on the team for next season.

Isaiah looks like a stud on the court. I pray he comes back to the program. One thing about the transfer portal is that it leads to lots of open inquiries. In the past, if a kid said he was transferring, he was gone. But now quite a few try the portal and return, so maybe we'll keep Jones. Assuming Coach wants him. |

You never know what might be causing a player to transfer. Could be basketball issues, could be a personal matter, could be a connection with someone at another school. Maybe the player just decided he doesn't like winter. In some programs, word gets out why a player transfers. We know why Rocket Watts and Julius Marble transferred from Michigan State. But with a program like Detroit, which is so secretive and not really covered in the local media, we usually don't find out why someone leaves. Unless someone in the know mentions something to one of the posters on this board, and they share it, we can only speculate.
I don't know what the issue was with Jones. If it was playing time, I don't know enough about his practice habits, discipline, etc., to really assign blame. Once a guy hits the portal, though, I usually go forward with the idea that they won't be back. If they come back, fine, but I think the coaching staff should be recruiting like they've got an opening there.

This is the point each year where I sit back and wait to see the recruits come rollin in around mid-August. Then, we'll start 2-6, but that's okay cuz the guys haven't had a chance to "gel" yet. Just about the time I learn all their names, we'll have our first defection. Season ends with a mediocre (at best) record and then the whole team hits the portal, leaving me waiting for thre following August.
I'm sure we will probably hold onto Pink tho... unless Hillsdale comes calling.

I was looking forward to watching Jones grow into the team leader in his junior season. He has good size, can shoot it and is a decent athlete. I can see a Big 12 team taking a flyer on him. He could end up at any number of schools in Tennessee.

Jones strikes me as a guy who wasn't a big recruiting target back in high school and is hoping to feel some of that "we want you" vibe.
I think Jones has potential, and he had a couple of good games in December. But he averaged 2 points per game and I am thinking there is a legit reason he didn't get more playing time. Bottom line, if you don't want to be here, probably best for everyone that you move on.

Kind of interesting: Jones didn't play against OU at Calihan; up at the McRena, he played just 2 minutes, with his only "stat" being 1 turnover. Obviously, though, Kampe sees something. |
