I hope that Mark lands in a good place. Unfortunately, for those teams that use analytics a lot, he doesn't even show up among the Top 50 players still available in many rankings from different analytics services. For shooting guards still available in the portal, his analytics put him somewhere from #18 to #25 depending upon the analytics service. So, his PPG and his intangibles that we saw and liked appear not to translate well to cold analytics. As among the entire portal, he ranked about #800. Stone ranked #573 in one service. Because so many players entered the transfer portal this year, many teams used analytics to create lists of players they would target. Mark's PPG and FT% seem to be offset by low defensive analytics. I'd like to see the systems that ranked Tank #800 and Stone #573. I'm not a fan of analytics as it is used in basketball. It's a system that has encouraged players to pass up wide open layups for three pointers. It would seem as if any coach basing his roster decisions only on analytics is making a mistake. That's a comment against your post, PTC. I know you are only reporting the news. It's funny, because analytics were originally touted as a way to find value that was overlooked. But a system that puts these two at #573 and #800, you know whatever analytic system they are using is just wrong. Analytics are based on models. Garbage in, garbage out.

Given that there were about 2700 players in the portal from all divisions, Stone was ranked in the top quartile and Mark was ranked in the top 30% of all players available in most analytics that I saw. Analytics can become a crutch and a CYA for many. Also, both players had poor 3PG% last year. In the modern game, that can be a negative to many coaches for guards.

It’s hard for them to get recognized like they should when they made up 70% of the offense on a 1 win team. That said if you do want them to hold water the only metric that holds any weight in CBB is Kenpom. Stone ranked top 15 in the entire country in % of his teams shots taken (34% taken) with a top 500 assist rate (19%). This is an equation for being efficient and likely why West Virginia took him and expects him to start. Mark on the other hand is just a unicorn prospect in the modern fold of basketball. Shot 28% from 3 on 68 attempts but 50% from the field on 350 attempts as a 1/2 guard. He draws a lot of fouls, played a lot of minutes and shoots very well from the line. Something every team wants just not every team will sign as they think they can get it in the aggregate across the board. Interested to see who takes him.

Tank is a good basketball player. Great hands, great touch, clutch at the foul line. But he doesn't want to be a Titan; he left, he wasn't tossed. So why are we wasting all these electrons on him? Move along, nothing to see here.

Is it possible that he could return to Detroit next season? I guess technically it's possible, but I would put it in the "highly unlikely" category. I wish he hadn't left and I wouldn't complain if he wanted back in and Coach Monty took him, but it seems that both sides have moved on.

School is staring soon...any updates on lil Tank Tank? Part of me thinks he'll end up at Memphis, particularly if the reports are true and Mike Davis is joining the staff there. Memphis currently lists only 11 players on their official roster. On the other hand, I'm not sure what the hold up might be with the young man. I'm unaware of any issues that would have prevented him from signing with someone already. It's almost September!

I can’t figure this one out! Looks like a real step down athletically and academically! Some really bad advice given to this young man!

Good luck to Marcus at Alcorn State. It was pretty obvious that he didn't want to stay at Detroit Mercy after Coach Davis left and that he didn't fit into Monty's plans so .... best of luck.

Coach Monty wanted him to stay and be part of his plans, but Mark wanted to leave. He even had an agent.

Best of luck, but that's a huge, huge step down, even from a 1-31 team.

I think Tank Tank thought he was going to get a big NIL deal from a P5 school. He should've remained at UofD, he probably would've been our primary option, he would've had a great season and he could've parlayed that into a P5 offer similar to what Jason Calliste did many years ago when he transferred to Oregon.

Big step down. Too bad for both Markus & UD. Good for Alcorn State.
