Scores for November 24, 2022. Buzzer beaters, battles, and blowouts.
HORIZON LEAGUE New Orleans 87, IUPUI 84. Heartbreaker for the Jags.
OTHER GAMES OF INTEREST #1 North Carolina 89, Portland 81. Closer than the final score would indicate. #3 Kansas 69, Wisconsin 68 (OT). Badgers lost on a putback with .2 seconds left. #6 Gonzaga 102, Portland State 78 #8 Duke 54, Oregon State 51. Not sure what was wrong with Duke today. Going by recent history, the Oregon State administration might give Coach Tinkle a two-year extension just for making it close. #18 Alabama 81, #12 Michigan State 70. Spartans were without starters Malik Hall and Jaden Akins. #20 UConn 83, Oregon 59. The Huskies first test of the year and they passed it. #22 Tennessee 73, USC 66 (OT). UT closed the game on a 7-0 run. #24 Purdue 80, West Virginia 68.
Iowa State 81, Villanova 79 (OT) NC State 76, Dayton 64 Oklahoma 69, Nebraska 56 Xavier 90, Florida 83 Seton Hall 70, Memphis 69. The Pirates won it with a shot at the buzzer. Butler 75, BYU 70 Vanderbilt 67, Fresno State 59 Northeastern 69, Manhattan 67 Washington 68, Saint Mary's 64. Actually an upset win for Washington, based on the betting lines.
MID MAJOR WIN OF THE DAY Sienna 80, Florida Statae 63. The 'Noles are struggling this year, but it's still a nice win for Sienna.

What To Watch for November 25, 2022.
1:00 PM ESPN2 George Raveling vs Stu Jackson. USC could use a solid win to counter that loss to Florida Gulf Coast. Wisconsin looks to avoid a letdown after falling short against Kansas.
1:30 PM ESPNN Florida State vs Stanford. Smell that? It's desperation.
3:30 PM ESPN #8 Grant Hill vs Tyrone Hill. Xavier is hoping to catch Duke at the right time.
5:30 PM ESPN #1 JR Reid vs Jeff Grayer. North Carolina gets their biggest test of the season against Iowa State.
7:30 PM ESPN #22 Tennessee vs 3 Kansas. On paper, the Game of the day.
9:30 PM #20 Jim Calhoun vs #18 Wimp Sanderson. Or maybe this match up of UConn and Alabama is the Game of the Day.
Midnight ESPN2 Jason Calliste vs #12 Kevin Smith*. Spartans will be without two starters again and Oregon is smarting after getting pounded by UConn yesterday.
* I picked Calliste and Smith because both are former University of Detroit guards who transferred up. If you don't remember Kevin Smith, don't feel bad. He played for the Titans in 1977-78, averaging 8 points and 5 assists per game as a freshman. He actually played more than Wilbert McCormick, backing up Long and Duerod. After his freshmen year, Smith transferred to Michigan State and played three years there, averaging 15.6 ppg as a senior and being named All Big Ten. I always felt like those first two years after Gaines would have been better if Smith had stuck around and teamed up with Kopicki and Davis.
One other thing, Kevin Smith is sometimes confused with Keith Smith, another local collegiate guard at that time. Keith Smith started at Michigan and was a valuable role player for them in 1978-80, averaging 6ppg as a sophomore. After that year, he was looking for a different situation, and transferred out to San Diego State to join up with Smokey Gaines. He averaged 12 points per game in his Aztec career. I think if the Titans had held on to Gaines, Smith likely would have ended up a Titan, probably one of several Detroit area transfers from places like Michigan and Michigan State who would have joined Gaines at Six Mile and Livernois in the 80s.
Oh, well, that's enough of the trip down the 70s and 80s Titan basketball rabbit hole.

Cal is 0-7. Missouri 105, Houston Christian 69 North Texas 68, Long Beach State 47
MID MAJOR WIN OF THE DAY Bryant 73, Syracuse 72. Wild game, as multiple players were ejected after two players traded love taps. Bryant had a one-point lead and the ball with 12 seconds left and a player on the free throw line, but he missed both and Syracuse was fouled on the ensuing possession. The Orangeman made both of his free throws, and the 'Cuse led by one with 8 seconds left, but Bryant got a layup at the buzzer to win it.

They did the same thing in the Syracuse/Bryant game, but I caught that one. Thank you.

Oakland loses to Missouri St. 76-64, falls to 2-6. Watts started, ended up with 0 points; Bowman had zero off the bench; Moore had 7 points. I thought they would have a tremendous backcourt this year with the high level transfers, but something isn’t clicking.

The backcourt struggles of the Grizz has been one of the biggest surprises in the HL so far this season.

Scoreboard for November 27, 2022. Milwaukee with another solid win. Some upsets nationally. Some big names continue to struggle. #1 falls again.
HORIZON LEAGUE Missouri State 76, Oakland 64. The Grizz fall to 2-6. Purdue Fort Wayne 104, Bluffton 41 NKU 85, Tennessee Tech 77 South Alabama 84, Robert Morris 70 Milwaukee 67, Boston University 46
LOCAL TEAMS Michigan State 78, Portland 77. The Spartans were up double figures late and almost gave up a MMWOTD. UC San Diego 66, EMU 63. Bates with 17 and 13, but only 5-17 from the floor, and a crucial turnover with EMU down 1 with less than a minute left.
OTHER GAMES OF INTEREST #18 Alabama 103, #1 North Carolina 101. (4OT). I can't call it an instant classic, because it wasn't a well played game. #6 Gonzaga 88, Xavier 84 #24 Purdue 75, #8 Duke 56. Big man Zach Edey with 21 and 12 for the Boilermakers. #13 Auburn 65, St. Louis 60 #19 UCLA 81, Bellarmine 60 #20 UCONN 71, Iowa State 53. The Huskies are better than I thought they were.
Boston College 53, Rhode Island 49. BC is 5-2. Fordham 68, Harvard 60. Fordham is 6-1. Oregon 74, Villanova 67 Sienna 60, Seton Hall 55 Arizona State 76, Alcorn State 54 Miami 66, UCF 64 Nebraska 75, Florida State 58. I would have lost a lot of money betting on FSU's record after 8 games. West Virgina 84, Florida 55. WVU looks like they might be having a bounce back year. Memphis 56, Stanford 48 Oklahoma 59, Ole Miss 55
MID MAJOR WIN OF THE DAY Portland State 84, Oregon State 73. That's Portland State's second win over Oregon State in eight days. First win was at Oregon State. This one was in Portland as part of the Phil Knight Legacy event. Apparently the Vikings were upset they didn't get the message board's MMWOTD when they beat the Beavers the first time, so they decided to do it again. Message received, Vikings.
MMWOTD Bonus: Tennessee Southern 84, Samford 82. Tennessee Southern (Not to be confused with Tennessee Tech or Texas Southern) is an NAIA school.

Thanks for keeping up the scoreboard, day by day, Sam. Just a few random thoughts I wanted to add on a handful of teams. The long weekend was packed full of games, not all of which any of us could keep up with. Re: Duke, it's difficult replacing a legend and it wouldn't surprise me if Jon Scheyer struggles to keep the Dookies at the same lofty perch Coach K always had them. Re: Georgetown, what day it was I don't recall but the Hoyas lost to American University, their neighbor down in D.C. This is not the first bad loss Patrick has had by any means and the day grows closer when Georgetown will have to bid adieu to their alltime great. Gonzaga has already suffered at least 2 losses. Most years, they go all season with less than that. It's difficult to tell whether 5-2 Boston College has any real potential when they've lost to Maine, squeaked by UD and beaten usually reliable Rhode Island by 4.
Then there's St Bonaventure, who chugs along successfully despite losing all 5 starters from last year's team. All of them had eligibility remaining too. The 4-2 Bonnies handled unbeaten Notre Dame by 12 the other night in a game played at the (NHL) Islanders new Coliseum in Elmont NY, I believe. Their coach, Mark Schmidt, is superb at finding new talent and has resisted offers of large contracts at bigger, more prominent schools. Contrary to Vitale's advice to pattern after Gonzaga, St Bona is a team to emulate. They have a faithful following, a great coach, and play in a great conference. Detroit would do well to follow them.
Finally, is there any worse basketball analyst than Bill Walton? He's either talking about tie-dyed tee shirts, the Lewis and Clark expedition to Oregon back in the 1800s, how wonderful it is to visit Amsterdam (I agree on that point), anything but the game he's supposed to be watching and describing. The bar is low at ESPN; they keep giving him games regardless.

Good points on Duke and Georgetown. We'll see if Scheyer can do what Coach K did. As much as I don't like Duke, I recognize Coach K's excellence as a recruiter and in game coach. Georgetown, instead of being patient through two rough seasons for John Thompson III, managed to harm relationships with three of the biggest names in Georgetown basketball history. They ticked Big John off by firing his son. They alientated JT3 who put together a run at Georgetown that most programs would kill to have. And they're going to have to fire the best player in school history, Patrick Ewing. They couldn't have screwed that decison up more if they tried. I like the idea of using St. Bonaventure as a model for the Titans. Bill Walton says so many crazy things that sometimes I tune in just to hear what nonsense he will spout next.

I think St Bonaventure and St Louis are both excellent role models for UDM. As for Coach K, I didn't care for him or some of the players that came through his program, but he was a winner and a very tough coach to follow.
In regard to Georgetown, bringing in star players or known names is a questionable way for a program to go, sometimes it works and many times it doesn't, Howard at U of M seems to be doing ok, but Howard had pro coaching experience, it certainly isn't working at Georgetown. Even bringing in a head coach's son is tough, like Ray Meyers som at DePaul failed.

Scores for November 28, 2022.
HORIZON LEAGUE Milwaukee 84, Southeast Missouri State 68. Three wins in a row for the Panthers. Losses to Purdue, Iowa State, and St. Thomas, but they have had a good start to the season.
OTHER GAMES OF INTEREST #9 Kansas 87, Texas Southern 55 #11 Arkansas 74, Troy 61 Virgina Tech 67, Minnesota 57 ACC/Big 10 Challenge Pittsburgh 87, Northwestern 52 ACC/Big 10 Challenge Marist 52, Columbia 39 Nevada 78, Sam Houston 60. SHU was undefeated with wins over Oklahoma and Utah. Bryant 98, Framington State 44 Tulane 75, UL Monroe 60
MID MAJOR WIN OF THE DAY Not a lot to choose from, but let's go with Grambling's 72-49 win over Dartmouth. Grambling was a two point favorite in this game, part of the San Antonio Shootout, but crushed Dartmouth. The Tigers won two games at this event.

What to Watch for November 29, 2012.
7:00 PM ESPN2 #22 Len Bias vs Rodney McCray. Want to see Louisville go 0-7? Now's your chance. Maryland is undefeated heading into this game.
7:30 PM ESPN Erich Santifer vs #16 Glynn Blackwell. Syracuse has a couple of losses to mid majors already this year. Illinois looking good so far. (Santifer, a graduate of Ann Arbor Huron High School, was a two time All Big East player at Syracuse. Glynn Blackwell, product of Highland Park High School, played four years for the Illini, averaging 12 ppg as a senior.)
9:30 PM ESPN #3 Ralph Sampson vs Mike McGee. Potentially a great game, potentially a blowout. Depends on which Michigan team shows up.
