Scores for December 7, 2022. Big win for the Titans, mixed results in the HL, some intersting upsets on the national scene.
Detroit 76, Tulsa 72. Excellent win for the Titans, their first non-con road win in almost two years. Fell behind, caught up, went back and forth, made the plays down the stretch to win. Lots to love about this game.
HORIZON LEAGUE Robert Morris 71, Central Michigan 66. Good road win for RMU, thanks to a big game from Kahliel Spear who had 18, 15, and 7. St. Bonaventure 61, Cleveland State 42. The Vikings didn't have a single double figure scorer. Fort Wayne 89, Southeast Missouri State 68. Washington State 68, Northern Kentucky 47
LOCAL TEAMS Michigan State 67, Penn State 58 Illinois State 87, EMU 81. For a minute, it looked like EMU would get their third win of the season, but they faded late. Bates had 9 points (5 of his six attempts from the floor were from three) 1 board, 1 assist, 1 steal, 3 fouls, and 3 turnovers in 29 minutes.
OTHER GAMES OF INTEREST #5 UConn 75, Florida 54. The Gators didn't put up much of a fight. The Huskies look dominant. #14 Indiana 81, Nebraska 65
St. John's 86, DePaul 67. Looks like another long year for my Blue Demons. Georgetown 75, Sienna 68 Villanova 70, Penn 59. Big Five action! Providence 99, Manhattan 59 Brown 59, Rhode Island 58. BIG win for Brown. Brutal loss for the A10. Miami 107, Cornell 105. Game of the night? Virginia Tech 77, Dayton 49. I'm surprised by the margin. It appears that Dayton might have been overrated. Loyola Marymount 69, Grand Canyon 65 Arizona State 75, SMU 57. The Sun Devils are 9-1, with Michigan being their big win. Their only loss was to Texas Southern. Texas Tech 78, Nicholls 71. The Red Raiders had to come from behind. Vanderbilt 75, Pittsburgh 74. The "Kevin Stallings Classic". (Not really.) Clemson 80, Towson 75 Santa Clara 66, New Mexico State 65 Eastern Washington 50, California 58 UNLV 77, Hawaii 62. UNLV is 9-1 USC 64, Cal State Fullerton 50 Florida Atlantic 83, Florida Gulf Coast 53
MID MAJOR WIN OF THE DAY I ignored the low hanging fruit of 0-10 Cal falling at home to Eastern Washington. Let's go with Jacksonville 73, VCU 62. The Dolphins were 8.5 point underdogs in the buy game, but hit 9-18 from three and 18-20 from the line to support a tenacious defenese to upset the Rams.

Utah Valley WACked BYU tonight, 75-60. Noah Waterman had 0 points. 13 minutes, 0-3 from the floor (all from distance) 1 rebound, 1 assist. Noah is having a little trouble finding his way at BYU. He's had two good games there: against Missouri State, when he hit 5-6 from three and had 15 points in only 12 minutes; and against division 2 Westminster College, when he had 13 points on another 5-6 shooting display. Those two games boost his scoring average to 5.6 ppg, but he hasn't hit double figures any other time. Not really rebounding or blocking shots, but that's not new. The BYU fans are hoping he hits his stride in conference play.

Utah Valley WACked BYU tonight, 75-60. Noah Waterman had 0 points. Is BYU playing Noah as a guard (his preferred position) or as a forward (reluctantly)?

Noah doesn’t like to bang and fell down a lot in contact.we had two players injured last year by Noah falling into their legs. Pretty much derailed Alec’s season!

What to Watch December 8, 2022
7:00 PM ESPN 2 Rutgers vs #25 Ohio State
8:00 PM Fox Sports 1. #20 Barry Stephens vs Roy Marble. State championship for Iowa as the Cyclones and Hawkeyes mix it up. Barry and Roy were two Flint legends who went on to star at Iowa State and Iowa, respectively. Both were taken from us to soon. RIP, players.
9:00 PM Big Ten Network. Glen Rice vs Trent Tucker. Michigan travels to Minnesota in a game both teams need. Keeping with the Flint theme, Rice and Tucker were two more Flint legends who starred in college before moving on to the NBA.

Scores for December 8, 2022.
HORIZON LEAGUE Youngstown State 117, Westminster (PA) 65. Better than practice, I guess.
LOCAL TEAMS Michigan 90, Minnesota 75. The Wolverines jumped ahead early and weren't threatened.
OTHER GAMES OF INTEREST Iowa 75, #20 Iowa State 56. The Hawkeyes scored the first 15 points of the game and never looked back. #25 Ohio State 67, Rutgers 66. The Buckeyes won on a controversial buzzer beater.
Colorado 95, Colorado State 65. The "good" Buffalo team showed up and took the state title in a blowout. Marshall 82, Duquesne 71. Amost the MMWOTD Utah 99, Jacksonville State 58
MID MAJOR WIN OF THE DAY UMass-Lowell 85, UMass 80. UML moves to 10-1 with a road win. UMass came into the game 7-1 with wins over Colorado, Charlotte, South Florida, and Harvard, so they are no pushover.

"Controversial" doesn't begin to describe it. The guy who took the game-winning shot came in from out-of-bounds and had not re-established himself before touching the ball.
And the play wasn't even reviewed. Ohio State got a gift.

Tony Paul’s MBB state rankings: MSU, UM, UDM, CMU, EMU, OU, WMU. The problem with our team is that they could beat MSU on a good day yet lose to WMU on a bad day. We still have the makings of a team that must catch lightning in a bottle to get to the tourney... as a 16-seed.

We still have the makings of a team that must catch lightning in a bottle to get to the tourney... as a 16-seed. With so many new pieces (and injuries/illness/eligibility issues mixed in) I think we are just now getting a sense of what is the likely trajectory for this team. After ten Titans games and examining the play of the Horizon League competition, I think we have a good chance of making the conference Final Four in Indy. If the team continues to mesh, their chances are as good as any of the other top five or six teams of winning a championship. Won’t be easy, but I think the talent is there.
