Doug McDermott won 107 out of these 145. He and his Dad established a culture of winning at Creighton. He helped lead his team to the most wins his school history. I continue to think that "we're not winning, so let's not do things that would benefit the program" is a dumb strategy for rebuilding the program. We’re not winning, however, we’ve been winners. Several winning periods in U of D history and several legendary players and coaches who won. Antoine missed his last seven shots in the YSU game. He had every opportunity to legitimately obtain the record. No need to buy him a game and risk more bad PR. As Dick Vitale recently said. He honors Antonia’s individual success but it’s time to put a wrap on the season.

Need to save the money and stop wasting money to chase a record that wont make our program better. When we going to realize that the last 5 years the schools has wasted millions to lose and have the worst attendance ever in the History of Detroit Titans Basketball.

I’m also dumbfounded and consider it “dumb strategy” to think that this coaching staff is capable of rebuilding this program.

I’m also dumbfounded and consider it “dumb strategy” to think that this coaching staff is capable of rebuilding this program. What's that have to do with anything? What's your beef, Hyperion? Do you not want the Titans to play in the CBI because you don't want AD to break the record? Because the Titans lose too much? Because you don't have confidence in the current coaching staff? Your arguments keep shifting around, and none of them seem to have much to do with the merits or demerits of playing in the CBI, if invited.

Actually, Coach McDermott stepped into a long-term winning culture at Creighton under Dana Altman and continued it after Altman left to take the Oregon job. Since 1998-99, Creighton only has posted two seasons with less than 20 wins, 2009-10 and 2014-15, the Blue Jays' 2nd year in the Big East. Had Creighton not played in the 2010-11 CBI, that would have been its 2nd consecutive season under 20 wins. Coincidentally, Creighton lost to Oregon in the 3-game, best 2 of 3 finals in that 2011 CBI. Creighton paid to play to reset the culture there.
I think we should emulate what other winning programs do. Pay to play when it is in our best interest.

Yes, if we receive an invitation to the CBI, we should accept. If Antoine scores at least four points and breaks the record, we should claim it,celebrate it, and hang a banner with his final total from the ceiling at Calihan. Put up a huge display that everyone walking into the Hall will see. Work with the City of Detroit to arrange a public ceremony with Mayor Duggan giving Antoine the key to the City. Own it. And anyone who doesn't like it can take a long walk off one of the short piers on Belle Isle. Based on the attendance the past 5 years i am sure i am speaking for all alumni. The investment we have made has been a waste of money and we were voted last in basketball attendance and fan experiences in the Horizon League. Hopefully the New president will improve the program and expect a good product moving forward.

I continue to think that "we're not winning, so let's not do things that would benefit the program" is a dumb strategy for rebuilding the program. We’re not winning, however, we’ve been winners. He had every opportunity to legitimately obtain the record. No need to buy him a game and risk more bad PR. As Dick Vitale recently said. He honors Antonia’s individual success but it’s time to put a wrap on the season. Do tell, what "bad PR" are we getting now? What "bad PR" will we get if we play in the CBI? I can almost see the story now: Associated Press, March 19, 2023. Detroit Mercy paid to play in the CBI, like 15 other schools this year, but all it did was cheapen its hallowed reputation, as its participation was a nakedly clothed effort to get a record for their star player that he doesn't deserve. Davis may have the record, but the Detroit Mercy name is perpetually soiled after the school lost a hard fought, 83-79 game to Ball State. The loss to the Cardinals merely shown a national spotlight on just how pathetic the University of Detroit program is.
First year Ball State Head Coach Michael Lewis expressed his irritation at having to play the Titans in the first round of the tournament. "I thought we'd be playing a real opponent, someone deserving, like Merrimack" said Lewis. "We would never have accepted an invitation to this two-bit, flea-bag tournament had we known we'd just be here to provide a backdrop for some showboating 23 year-old from a dying city like Detroit."
The game was marred by a post-game incident in which Ball State's senior guard Darien Owens-White, who played high school ball in Detroit and who scored a season high 5 points in the game, exchanged words with Davis. White, who was offered by former Titan Head Coach Bacari Alexander back in 2017, reportedly told Davis in the handshake line that "You don't deserve to play in the CBI." As the Titans left the court following their embarrassing defeat, a group of attendees who had accidentally wondered into the arena threw garbage at the players. "Anybody who needs 145 games to break the all-time scoring record is not worthy of respect" said one of the attendees as he was hauled away by Daytona Beach police. Daytona Chief of Police Jakari Young added, "let me tell you, my officers were none to happy to be forced to defend that Detroit team. They all know the team was invited just so that Davis could get Pistol Pete's record. But unlike Detmer's administration, they're professionals, and did their jobs." ...This is going to be really, really bad PR for the program, if we get invited to the CBI and accept.

Exactly, we do not gain anything from playing more games. Him breaking the record does not bring in better recruits, does not increase the amount of students at the school, does not make our basketball program better, does not bring in recruits from Detroit who laugh at how bad the program really is now. Stop wasting money to showcase one player and use the money to recruit better players into the program. Lets face it we beat Oakland 1 time in the last 5 years .

Good investment , no wonder nobody goes to games anymore .

Trevergoat et al. This is America. It's fine to criticize. I could write a dissertation on things U-D has done over the years that I disagree with. But here we are in a moment of OPPORTUNITY. We either meekly accept that we had a bad season, AD fell just short of immortality, and take our ball home for the season. Or we step out, spend a few bucks, and take our reputation and season on the road. If we come back after a first round ass-kicking, then go have it. Complain that yes indeed it was a waste of precious dollars. But if AD sets a record that will forever be ours, and we fight and win back some respect by actually winning game(s) in this fleabag Tourney, that would be validation of the commitment and a step in the right direction.
So why don't you just relax? You just come out of the woodwork and go nuts at the most unusual once-in-a-lifetime moment in U-D history. I don't waste time on those radical right wing/left wing and conspiracy theory websites, but now I know what kind of people engage in them.
