Detroit received a commitment from Bethune-Cookman transfer Donovann Toatley. He is a guard who averaged 7 ppg in his most recent college basketball season.

So, Toatley was previously with Chattanooga and Monmouth. He was on the Bethune-Cookman roster last season, but didn't play. Played the 2018-19 season at Chattanooga, averaging 11 points per game. Transferred to Monmouth and sat out the 2019-20 season. Appeared in 17 games for Monmouth in 2020-21. Not sure where he was in 2021-22 and I don't know why he didn't play for Bethune Cookman last season. EDIT: It looks like he was on the roster for New Mexico Junior College in 2021-22, but I haven't found any stats for him for that season. www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/donovann-toatley-1.html

Any idea, does Donovan play the PG position?

Any idea, does Donovan play the PG position? He's 5-9, so the presumption would be point guard. Same stature as Sonny Johnson, just conjecture but perhaps this commitment is an indicator that Johnson might not be in the Titans' future plans.

Toatley averaged 11 ppg as a frosh at Chatanooga. He was injured last year. Will be a grad transfer with a business major. 5'9" 185 lbs. PG. Sonny Johnson, Jr is still on the roster and will use this season to practice and regain his game shape. Coach described Toatley to me as a downhill tough PG.

The New Mexico JC archives don't list him as being on the roster, or anywhere in the stats, in 2021-22. He was included in a "meet the team" feature in late September of 2021. Can't find anything on what happened there.
Last year he missed the entire season with a foot injury. Was on the honor roll at Chattanooga, but was also suspended from the team twice for team rules violations.

Any idea, does Donovan play the PG position? He led Chattanooga in assists in 2019.

If Donovan can be effective defending the perimeter, he’ll get quality playing time.

This comment isn't solely focused on Donovann, but one byproduct of the transfer crazy/portal madness environment of today is that we see more and more players with what we used to call a "raggedy" career path. Detroit will be Toatley's fifth post high school program, and he didn't see any action at two of them. I don't know if he got chased out of Chattanooga or if he left voluntarily, but would it have been that bad to stay there and work through whatever issues he had? (He was denied a waiver, so I am guessing he wasn't run off.) His transcript has to be a mess, and hopefully he has been able to accumulate enough credits to earn a degree.

I understand him to be a grad transfer, so no question about transferring credits.

If Donovan can be effective defending the perimeter, he’ll get quality playing time. I think he will be our starting point guard!
