This comment isn't solely focused on Donovann, but one byproduct of the transfer crazy/portal madness environment of today is that we see more and more players with what we used to call a "raggedy" career path. Detroit will be Toatley's fifth post high school program, and he didn't see any action at two of them. I don't know if he got chased out of Chattanooga or if he left voluntarily, but would it have been that bad to stay there and work through whatever issues he had? (He was denied a waiver, so I am guessing he wasn't run off.) His transcript has to be a mess, and hopefully he has been able to accumulate enough credits to earn a degree. Grad Transfer sounds like some disciplinary issues. Looks to me like he fits the mold of Coach Davis’s TSU point guards.

Looks to have a ton of talent and video shows him against good competition not patsies! Hope the wheels of discipline and good judgment do not come off while he is here! You notice in all their recruiting videos that the players always grow an inch or two and then when they arrive they contract again.🫤 in our case it doesn’t matter as MD has looked for talented small guards in the past and seems to show a preference for have one in the mix.

He sure looks like a very talented basketball player, I like the way he finds the open player. I hope it works out for him here. The HL is a "guard" league, seems like he's a good fit.

Welcome Donovan. I don't know what came before, but he is a Titan now!

Based on the fact that Donovan did not play last season, does he have 2 years of eligibility remaining?

Based on the fact that Donovan did not play last season, does he have 2 years of eligibility remaining? It's difficult to determine in today's NCAA how many years of eligibility that Toatley would have remaining. He has actually only played two seasons that count that against his eligibility. 2018-19: Chattanooga 2019-20: Monmouth (ineligible due to old transfer rule) 2019-20: Monmouth 2020-21: Monmouth (season doesn't count against eligibility due to Covid) 2021-22: DNP 2022-23: Bethune-Cookman (DNP due to injury)

Is there information to the contrary? I believe someone reported he required a waiver.

PJ Fuller has been in college for the past four years (TCU-2 years & Univ of Washington-2 years) therefore I assumed he had completed his undergraduate degree and and enroll at UDM as a graduate student. Evidentially that is not the case.

It's official. Our intrepid PR staff had put the wrong photo of Toatley on the original Tweet.

Great news regarding Donovann Toatley, the fact that he's played 45 college basketball games at the D1 level is significant! He's a graduate transfer therefore I would like to believe he won't require a wavier.

I believe next season will be his 7th year and his 5th team? The Covid year along with the changes regarding sitting out a year and injury red shirt years creates some very odd situations. Dude started playing college ball in 2018. So I guess he will turn 25 next season, like Cormac Ryan for Carolina this season.
Can’t say I blame the dude. Using his last year of eligibility is almost certainly his best option in life, as I doubt he’d get any serious money playing overseas. But it is somewhat odd, and when guys like this decide to keep playing, some younger traditional aged players are the ones losing the minutes/scholarships.

Also, and this is obvious, but we could have used him on our roster next year. I think the deadline to enter the portal was a day or two ago. With no coach on 6 Mile, entering the portal is probably a smart move for any player who thinks he will not be left without a scholarship offer.
Have to wonder how we field a team next year. Some portal players are committing. HS kids are long gone. Obviously, there’s no shortage of college students who want to play D1 basketball, but the number of them who can play at even a HL level of respectable ball is more limited than we often think. These days with all the changes, part of the game is hiring a coach who will bring a player or two with him. That’s harder when you hire an assistant coach.
