Maybe we did, and DeCure didn't want to leave for us even with more money. I don't know if that's what happened, but if the Titans did offer, I could see DeCuire, and most other successful D1 coaches turning us down. Unless, of course, we threw a bunch of money at them. I think the job is still attractive. I dont want anymore retreads or inexperienced assistants getting their first head coaching job at any level. We need to find the right coach, someone young and hungry with college head coaching experience that is looking to move up. I think we should probably pursue a successful D2 head coach. Someone like Ferris States Andy Bronkema would fit the bill for me. I believe Stan Gouard who was a successful D2 coach at the University of Indianapolis was the runner up to both Mike Davis and Bacari Alexander when were looking for a new coach in 2016 and 2018. Gouard has since moved on to Southern Indiana which is now a D1 school. Jerrod Calhoun was a successful D2 coach who has done well at Youngstown State.

I disagree. I think there are a lot of successful D1 coaches that would be happy accepting and making what Davis makes. Did you actually read my entire post? If so, tell me what part of it you disagree with?

When Foster Wonders was a Junior I contacted Coach Davis and was told they were not interested in players from a C or D school. Last night Wonders and Reddinger were the leading scorers for Green Bay and played well against Davis superior recruits. Obviously the Green Bay Coach isn’t as sharp as the guy we are paying to run our program into the ground. Wonders came from a 4 yr. High school with 243 students and Reddinger is from a 4 yr. HS with 217 students. If Davis was here when Bruinsma graduated, he would have never been a Titan. These guys do not fit the Davis idea of what makes a team. They aren’t 5’8” they do close out on shooters and they play defense.

I'm not sure where you got the $440,000 in base salary from, the article I posted states that his base salary is that his base salary is $185,711. I wanted UofD to look at him when we hired Mike Davis, I think we are to far in the depths to interest a coach of his caliber at this time, the rebuild is going to be tremendous, I'm not an ageist but I think we need an energetic coach under the age of 50. Ferris States Andy Bronkema would be a guy I would target. He won a D2 title a few years ago and FSU has started the season @ 11-2. We have one common opponent this season...Toledo. They beat Ferris by 31 points and they beat UofD by 34. "DeCuire's base salary increased to $185,711 from $180,000 in his previous deal. If he remains employed by UM on July 1 of every year of the contract, he'll receive a retention bonus of $50,000". You are confusing the term "base salary" with total compensation. According to the article that you linked, through 2025, DeCure receives annual cash compensation structured as follows: Base Salary: $185,711 Buy Game Money: $165,000 Annual Retention Bonus: $50,000 Appearance Compensation: $30,000Total Annual Base Compensation: $430,711Other possible performance bonusesAcademic & Attendance Bonuses: up to about $20,000 Post Season Bonuses: up to about $50,000 depending upon what tournament and how far the team goes. To land DeCure, assuming he would even consider us, we would need to offer him a total compensation package of more than the $430,711 that he likely makes at Montana each year plus pay his $250,000 that he would owe Montana for leaving before his contract ends in 2025, plus pay Davis whatever we would owe him for his final year for terminating him before the contract ended.

Just a reminder: Before he went after MD, Vowels offered the job to Bronkema (they had just won the D2 National Championship, I believe). The Detroit HS coaching fraternity pulled its garbage act again and told him that if he took the job, they would not support him in his local recruiting efforts, so he turned us down.

Maybe we should start a "bring back Ray" movement?

Some thoughts:
I think the main thing attractive about the Detroit head coaching job is that it's a D1 job. Anyone who isn't a D1 coach and wants to be one will be interested to some degree. Beyond that, I don't think this is a job that is seen as a great opportunity, for all the reasons that have been mentioned over the course of this season. If you have other options, Mercy probably isn't going to be your runaway favorite.
I have heard speculation centering on a couple of reasons as to why Bronkema wasn't hired. I've heard that the administration bungled the hire, which I can believe, and I've heard that local basketball coaches threatened to freeze him out, which I have to say seems unlikely. Which coaches were these? PSL? Catholic League? Suburan coaches? Is there that much unity and influence among area coaches these days? The talent pool here has shriveled in the past couple of decades. Does that kind of threat really scare a coach? Also, in the years that Bronkema has been at Ferris State, he hasn't made any connections or established any relationships with Detroit area coaches? I regularly talk to several guys with connections to City of Detroit basketball, including some coaches, and they are unaware of that threat to Bronkema.
Another thing about Bronkema: I think he's been a great coach at Ferris State, and I would support his hire at Detroit if the position becomes open. However, he was pretty hot at the time that time and a bunch of mid majors have had openings since he won the national championship in 2018. EMU, CMU, and WMU have all had openings. Why hasn't anyone else hired him? Is he not as highly regarded as his record would indicate?

Look at 34 year old former Titan player/assistant Jordan Fee! 11-2, ranked #17 in first year as HC at D-2 Gannon; team was 3-23 last year. Fee was assistant last year on unbeaten D-2 champion Nova Southeastern.
I'd support a Bronkema hire, but I have same question as Sam: why hasn't another D-1 program hired him? Bronkema would seem to be a natural fit at CMU or WMU. He has not duplicated his 2018 success but he has continued to win since. He's 113-49 since 2018 with 2 GLIAC titles. Ferris is currently ranked #15 in D-2. Turns 40 next month.

Jorden Fee would be a good hire, and one we might get to come here.

I remember when coach Byrdsong was hired in 1988 the PSL coaches threatened to boycott UofD because neither Perry Watson nor Ben Kelso were considered for the job. Even as a teenager I thought a threatened "boycott" was silly, they werent sending players to UDM anyway, and the ones UofD did recruit either were denied admittance, Greg Bent (Providence) and Ben Gillery (Georgetown) or flamed out; Lenard Collins, Daniel Lyton, Emanuel Bibb. I am also curious as to why Bronkema hasn't moved up to D1. I also dont believe that a threatened boycott by a group of coaches who already aren't sending us players would dissuade Bronkema from taking the job. If I had to guess, my best guess would be that the athletic department dropped the ball.

I recall Michigan high school hoops guru Steve Bell had a tweet at the time suggesting that Bronkema got played by the UD administration, but there were no details and it wasn't clear that that is what he meant.
So how's that for a meaningless post?

So how's that for a meaningless post? That ties in to one of the issues we've discussed about the Titan program. No information, not even "off the record, unofficially" comes from this University in these circumstances. Any time you're in a situation like this with the Titans, you can pretty much accuse them of anything, without any pushback from the University. They are quite content to let someone else write the narrative, to our own detriment.

In 1988, I would imagine that the threat of a boycott might carry some weight, given that the PSL and Catholic League were still putting out a lot of basketball talent. But like you said, it's not like we were getting Detroit PSL kids anyway. When Perry was hired, I heard whispers that some coaches would refuse to send players to U-D as retribution because Perry was known for "recruiting" players from other schools when he was at Southwestern. I never saw evidence that it was happening, though. Threats like that are stupid, if they are ever actually made. It creates an adversarial relationship going forward, and very few coaches have the type of juice to actually make a boycott like that happen. No self respecting AD/Administration would bow to that kind of pressure. And more importantly, you're limiting the opportunities available for the kids you are coaching. It's a stupid tactic.
